Boko Haram: It's time to discuss our unity - N/Delta leaders *S/East govs to convene stakeholders meeting

POLITICAL and opinion leaders of the oil-rich Niger Delta region were, at the weekend, unanimous in their call for the proper re-structuring of Nigeria along lines peculiar to the various beliefs, thoughts and aspirations of the nationalities of the country.

Besides, they contended that the uprising of the Islamist sect, Boko Haram, has more to do with politics than religion.

Renowned professor of constitutional law, Itsey Sagay, pioneer National Secretary of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), Chief Francis Williams, National Coordinator of the Niger-Delta Economic Monitoring Group (NDEMG), Comrade Joseph Evah, as well as chairman of the Ijaw Media Forum, Chief Asu Beks, both blamed the nation's structural imbalance for the Boko Haram menace, saying, time has come to discuss the very essence of Nigeria's unity.

While the duo of Evah and Beks accused a former National Security Adviser (NSA) as the unseen hand behind the spate of bombings in the country, former Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Festus Porbeni, called for caution, as the nation grapples with the insurgency of the dreaded Islamist sect.

Sagay said: "The insurgency of the Boko Haram menace has, again brought to the fore the inevitability of a national discourse that will discuss the myriad problems facing this nation; we cannot run away from this. Whether we like it or not, the group has made it clear that it wants the introduction of governments along Islamic injunctions across the nation. Fine, that is one of the cardinals of true federalism that some of us have fought for all the years but not the way they go about it, taking innocent lives. I think that is why some may rightly argue that their activities are more political than religion.

"But then, President Jonathan has a duty to help himself. He knows that the issue of Boko Haram is very much there with every possibility of political undertone; but is it not the same constituency, I mean the civil society, that made him president against all odds that he is fighting? He should help himself by being less controversial outside Boko Haram."

And Evah said: "Today, it is clear that what Boko Haram wants is beyond Islamic governments in the North; we know they are after the president who they think has taken their turn to be president. Let us not deceive ourselves in this country. Boko Haram has sponsors all over the North and they include very powerful people from the region who see political power as their birthright.

Williams said: "The issue, I think, goes beyond Boko Haram; the INC had made its predictive position clear years back that until certain fundamental issues concerning the existence of Nigeria are discussed, we will be chasing shadows in trying to solve attendant problems. We must go back to the drawing board if Nigeria must remain one indivisible entity."

Meanwhile, youth leaders of Ijaw, Igbo and those from the Middle Belt are billed to meet in Enugu next week to discuss the recurring Boko Haram crisis and other issues.

A South-South youth leader, in a telephone interview, told the Nigerian Tribune on condition of anonymity that delegates to the two-day conference would discuss other vital issues apart from the Boko Haram insurgency.

Meanwhile, disturbed by the incessant bombings, especially in the northern part of the country, the five South-East governors are set to convene a meeting of stakeholders from the zone in order to take a firm stand on the matter.

Arising from a meeting held at the Enugu Government House, which lasted for about three hours, the governors in the zone said within the next one week the leaders in the zone would meet and make their position known to the public.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, which was attended by Governors Sullivan Chime of Enugu State, Theodore Orji of Abia State, Rochas Okorocha of Imo State and Martins Elechi of Ebonyi State. The chairman of the forum, Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State, said the governors were concerned about the security situation and were ready to take a definite step on the matter.

'We deliberated on only one thing: the security situation in the country and as it affects us in this zone and we have decided to call a meeting of the Igbo political leaders to discuss the issue, and at that time our position will be made known to the public," Obi said.

It was, however, gathered that the meeting was not unconnected with the call by the Kano State chapter of the Ohaneze Ndigbo, which has asked the South-East governors to begin the immediate evacuation of the Ndigbo from the troubled states.

Man has always hidden behind religion to perpetrate evil. BH is strictly a political struggle for power.

Best move

It is time to discuss our future. The North and its leaders can no longer sit on the fence on the issue. They must either choose BokoHaram or the rest of us.

If they prefer BH: Then they must seek independence accordingly
if they want unity: Then lets sit together and negotiate a devolved or confedrated Government for the sake of peace.

If we do not negotiate at least a devolved govt right now, Nigeria will collapse in a very bloody fashion in future!

The thing is dat Nigerians r attacking d problem d wrong way.y?
1.The boko haram menace is d offshoot of decades of negligence by past govts. It has been brewing 4 a long time and was only waiting 2 explode.if successive govts had governed d masses well and tackled-poverty,joblessness,underdevelopment,corruption e.t.c we would not be talking of boko haram. So what we r having now is reaping what d country's leaders have sown under d guise of religious extremism. But of course, poverty is a determining factor.
2.We ourselves contributed to this mess by-Voting 4 jonathan and not PDP(thank God I did not).if only nigerians had used their brains instead of sentiment,we prolly would have voted 4 a leader who has balls of steel 2 face Corruption and tackle our problems head-on and prolly reduce the menace 2 its barest minimum.Imagine when d c-in-c says "Boko Haram have infiltrated my govt"-u know there is problem.
3.Nigeria as a country has d same problem. No region is more developed economically(4get lagos) than d other.Every region is faced with d same problem of lack of basic amenities-light,road,water,jobs e.t.c.Until Nigerians realise this and use their head 2 think dat what we need is a leader irrespective of his/her tribe/ethnicity dat will lead us 2 d promised land. But when an igbo man like me begins 2 scream and say-yorubas and hausas have ruled us now its d time of d igbo man.I always ask and say-When d hausa man was in power what did he do?R d nothern states more developed than d eastern region?or obasanjo who spent 8 yrs in power-did he build d road to his own village not 2 talk of d south-west?
In summary what I am saying is this-4get all this call 4 conference and rubbish and call 4 conferences dat will address d fundamental issues-Corruption,accountability,good leadership e.t.c

^^^^^^

U still dont get it. The structure of Nigeria and how it works breeds corruption by default.
Having a central government paying money to state governments is the fundamental reason why we will never tackle corruption, it is the reason why we will never have a proper census, it is responsible for biased election, it is responsible for our failed immigration policy, failed policing, the cost of running the huge fedral government is also unsustainable.

We can run in circles all we like, but if Nigeria continues in its current structure it will never work!

Beaf, I never wanted to reply any of your pro GEJ posts in nairaland but do you have to make your support for him sound very obvious and silly atimes? I know you have made some good and sensible posts in this website but every now and then you produce the unthinkable to support GEJ. I for one believed GEJ could have savaged our country as president but the guy has failed. I do not know why he has failed and I would never go into it. Sagay made a very good statement IMO and someone spotted it out. You did not have to attack him no matter how mildly you made it sound.

I wish you would stick to the good posts here, they do make for good reading.
