Riots have erupted in the Sengalese capital of Dakar, leaving a policeman dead, as angry protesters took to the streets after a court cleared President Abdoulaye Wade's tilt at a highly disputed third term in office.

The African nation's Constitutional Council gave the 85-year-old the green light to run in February 26 polls, sparking anger among opponents who accuse him of fiddling with the constitution to serve his own interests.

Amid the resulting unrest, Wade in turn told his opponents to stop throwing "temper tantrums".

The five-judge council rejected the candidacy of music icon Youssou Ndour, who warned of rising tension in the country and vowed to challenge his disqualification.

While the international community appealed for calm in one of Africa's most stable democracies, violence spread through the seaside capital on Friday night as rioters engaged in running battles with police, setting alight tyres and shops.

"They killed a policeman," Dakar police commissioner Arona Sy told AFP of clashes between police and demonstrators, without saying how he died.

Thousands had gathered peacefully at the Place de l'Obelisque in the working-class suburb of Colobane all day ahead of Friday's highly anticipated ruling.

This will happen in a country where the whole leaders are CORRUPT. If you have ONLY a two year term, why a third one? They should besiege the house of that judge(s) and bring them to street justice, rubbish.

No! It is not problem with African leaders. Somebody would soon say it is white man's . Not until we Africans start to see our problems as our own faults we'll never moved forward in finding solutions!

That is a typical character and aspiration of a typical African man, even you(reading this post) have natural tendency to repeat this if given the opportunity.
However this man has forgotten he is at the closest point to his grave
Re: Thousands In Senegal Protest As Court Grant Wade Right To Seek 3rd Term by odumchi: 1:45am On Jan 29, 2012
This is a typical example of African corruption and political failure. Why is such an unpopular president still ruling Senegal anyway? What makes his decision any different from what Obasanjo attempted to do?

I'm glad that the people of Senegal (or atleast Dakar) have risen and have attempted to take control of their own destiny. Africans are tired if corruption and political incompetence. From Tripoli to Cairo and Dakar to Abuja, people are waking up.

As things stand, West Africa is in Flames.
Re: Thousands In Senegal Protest As Court Grant Wade Right To Seek 3rd Term by Nobody: 3:55am On Jan 29, 2012
Believe it or not this is exactly what GEJ was attempting the moment he smuggled himself into power a few months ago.

First he visited two of the world's most despicable and vicious despots that have summarily implanted themselves in power for life over the objection of their people: Youweri Musevini (Uganda) and Paul Biya (Cameroon)----- those were your President's first official trips as Head of Nigeria, for those of you still doubting that GEJ is nothing but a dictator in the making.

Then he arrived in Abuja and within days he decided to request a 6-7yr tenure even though he was less than 3 weeks into his term. THESE WERE THE SAME EXACT TACTICS MUSEVINI AND BIYA USED TO ENTRENCH THEMSELVES IN POWER.

Do not for one second think GEJ is still not plotting how to stay in power as Nigeria's Life President.

Let me make a prediction: If GEJ provides efficient electricity, he'll think he deserves to be Nigeria's first Life President, and he'll do whatever it takes to achieve that.

[b]Will our African leaders ever learn from history. We have had so many dictators right from the 19th century to the present and their case ended up in disgrace.
Some of this dictators where forced out of office, others where forced into exile, others died in office.

Take for example the likes of Yakubu Gowon, Ibrahim Babangida, Sani Abacha, Olusegun Obasanjo ( Nigeria ) Samuel Doe ( Liberia ) Doe died in the hands of the Prince Yomi Johnson rebel group who captured him when he paid an unscheduled visit to ecomog headquarter during the period of the Liberian civil war, Muamar Gadafi ( Libya ) died from injury he sustained when he was captured in a tunnel in his hometown of Sirte, Libya during the uprising that took place some months back in his country.

There are the likes of Mobutu Seseko of Congo, Kinshasha, Idi Amin of Uganda, Museveni of Uganda, Paul Biya of Cameroun, Iddris Derby of Chad, Blaise Compaore of Bukina Faso, etc

Obasanjo used to be well respected for handing over power to a civilian government that is the Shagari government  when he was an army general in the 1979 but when he became a civilian president  and as soon as his tenure ended he started seeking for a third term.  He also built some unnecessary friendship with some of Africa corrupt dictators. This action of his has kept him in the black book of dictators. Wade is just going to join this long list of persons as he had refused to heed the warning signs.
