NSC Facebook Page (Nigerian Sports Commission Press Release) by idmanzik: 5:34pm On Jan 31, 2012
THE NSC FACEBOOK PAGE:

The attention of the National Sports Commission has been drawn to posts on the Commission’s Page alleging that the Commission spent the sum of N1.2m to open a Facebook Page. Nothing can be further from the truth. The truth of the matter is:

i) The idea to open a Facebook Page for the National Sports Commission (NSC) was muted by the ICT Unit of the Commission. The objective of the project was to “use Facebook as an interactive forum to connect the Nigerian youth all over the world with the National Sports Commission and its mission”.

ii) During the course of briefing the immediate past Hon. Minister of Sports/Chairman, National Sports Commission, Alh. Yusuf Suleiman, he directed that a more aggressive approach be adopted in projecting the Facebook Page. The Hon. Minister (HM), who has a personal Facebook Page, also directed that the Facebook crew should accompany him to visit all the athletes and their coaches who were in various camps across the country in preparation for the 10th All Africa Games. Furthermore, he directed that the crew should attend the 10th AAG in Maputo to update the Page on happenings during the Games.

iii) Consequent upon the Hon. Minister’s directives, a Memo dated August 2, 2011 seeking for N902,000.00 was approved for a two-man team to visit the various camps. This was to enable the crew interact directly with the athletes and their coaches and obtain firsthand information about them for Facebook Page.

iv) Following the directive of the HM to adopt a more aggressive approach in projecting the Facebook Page, it was decided at the ICT Unit level that the NSC Facebook Page should be advertised in Facebook. An initial sum of $200 was committed to this. This immediately translated to a tremendous increase in the followership of the NSC Facebook within one week.

v) It is no secret that Facebook Pages can either be used as:

a) a personal social interactive forum; or

b) a commercial tool to advertise goods and services, project a cause, draw awareness to products, canvass for followership, etc.

The Commission’s Facebook Page was deployed for the second category, which naturally attracts advertisement costs. The creators of Facebook can be contacted on this.

vi) Furthermore, following the success of the advert, another memo dated August 26, 2011 for N300,000.00 was approved to step up and extend the advertisement of the Page, purchase Internet Modems with a one month additional subscription.

vii) We wish to state that:

a) Opening of Facebook pages does not attract any form of payment and the NSC Facebook Page was opened at no cost.

b) The initial $200 paid for advertisement was privately funded.

c) The sums of N902,000.00 and N300,000.00 were approved for the Facebook Page crew to accompany the HM on his visits to the various camps of athletes and their coaches and to purchase internet modems with additional one month subscription respectively. Of this amount, the sum of $1,000 (N160,000.00) was to advertise the NSC Facebook Page in Facebook and the Page was so advertised.

All the above can be verified.

wanna make sense die  grin All this means is that NSC has set the precedence for other Ministries to start opening facebook page and providing for it from their yearly budget as  utility/logistics/publicity expenses for supporting a facebook page. very clever. don't be surprised that NURTW will also have a facebook page to promote their constant clashes  grin  grin  grin. I thank GEJ for bringing facebook to Nigeria  grin grin grin grin

If this is true, why then this much sensational media outcry.

The fact is, our public officials can not be trusted especially with funds. While we are made to believe this record, individual investigation is a necessity in order to ascertain the true position of things.

To cut the long story short, facebook consumed 1.2 million. Interesting. Can only happen in Nigeria.

This convoluted explanation over a FB page! na wa o

Nigerians do not trust public officials; quite rightly and these public  officials also know nobody believes them anymore. Total lack of trust

The media may have overblown this story. Looking at the items most of the money was spent on creating content for the FB page. This content can still be used on their website (if they have one) and other media.

Also, spending up to $1,000 for advertisement on Facebook to increase awareness is no big deal

Yes, may be  a stupid idea to do the FB page, but  there's no story here. People should just let this go.
Re: NSC Facebook Page (Nigerian Sports Commission Press Release) by Koolking(m): 6:33pm On Jan 31, 2012
If a commission like this is purported to spend this amount on fb, then the presidency is spending quite a fortune on its fb page secluded from public knowledge.
Re: NSC Facebook Page (Nigerian Sports Commission Press Release) by yamakuza: 6:35pm On Jan 31, 2012
This shouldnt come as a surprise to those who charge N1.2m and above for designing sites for politicians.

Although i havent seen the page and its complexity, its safe to say costs can skyrocket if facebook apps are involved.

Obama's campaign page had a lot of those apps.

If GEJ's page is outsourced, the annual maintenance cost alone will easily run into millions.

What's 1.2M to manage a facebook page for 1 whole year?,

Make we hear word, even if they stole the camera that could take such pictures, won't they pay the people managing the platform?, or questions should not be answered?, or you think 5,500 subscribers just joined, without any ads?

See how clear the pic below which I picked from there is, make we hear word abeg!

Facebook account commercial (for ads) needs funding. . . if they honestly are going to do Facebook ads, N1.2m might not be enough for a year($20/day).

Personally, I run 5 Facebook small business accounts for ads and each costs me a $100/month minimum (which I do not even fund on a regular basis).

The questions here though are;

1. Are they running ads? If yes, why and how much for each campaign?

2. Are they employing a staff for management of the alleged Facebook account?

3. What is the N1.2m for? I mean precisely. Opening the account? Maintaining the account? Duration?

WE DID THIS YESTERDAY WHEN THE STORY FIRST CAME OUT.

THIS IS CLEAR ENOUGH EXPLANATION ABOUT THE FACEBOOK THING. . . .WE HAVE TO BE REASONABLE NOT ANTAGONISTS JUST FOR THE SAKE OF IT.

WE SHOULD RATHER BE ASKING THEM HOW THE MILLIONS FOR THE STADIA WERE ADMINISTERED.

I know about running Facebook Pages and can tell you that N1.2m is not too much for managing one in a year. The real question is: were all these things truly done or is this 'reasonable' explanation being used to cover-up corruption?

Facebook pages are the next big thing in advertising particularly in Nigeria. Give me a buzz if you need management of such a page. Creation is free but management and advertising cost money. The bigger your budget, the better the results- It is that simple!

When it comes to advertising, the figures tend to be large. Do you have any idea of how much a 30-second advert on NTA Network News at Nine costs?

Yes there is corruption in government but the NSC officials seem to have this one covered because there is a logical explanation for it. If you give facebook $1 billion for advertising, it could exhaust it within 3 days depending on the parameters you set for your campaign. Let's keep things real.
Re: NSC Facebook Page (Nigerian Sports Commission Press Release) by eledalo: 8:19pm On Jan 31, 2012
Come on you crackheads, this explanation is reasonable and makes sense, unless you are senseless! Creating, advertising and managing a facebook page for a full year with a budget of 1.2 million? Thats barely 4k a day! Quit complaining you crackheads!

Do you get it? You WOULD NOT  see adverts on the page, the page itself is sponsored (it's the advertised product) It is "randomly" advertised on people FB pages by the right hand side (it's called impressions). You might see it you might not. . . Personally I have not seen the page advertised but others might have. Google facebook ads or if you have FB account read about it by clicking "advertising"

Secondly, you can go to the fb page right now and read other people's comments, and also post your own grievances with the state of sports administration. . .just like the sport facilities thing you just complained about.

It's surprising to see how you are coercing me to visit Facebook and make my grievances known. Dude, I didn't mean to offend you but it is very childish of you to say that.

Nothing negative intended even though you tend to see it in an alternate light . . . was just saying money spent on FB accounts can easily be verified if need be, and a good idea of cost can be deduced from FB's website. Plus the sports commission's FB page is a good avenue to contribute, criticize, or make suggestions.

What is NSC's Mission? To display our awful facilities and ill prepared athletes to the world?

Is the idea or rather the objective behind this  not to rob the Government?

How come you are now Father Xmas to NSC?  This cash is still part of our money looted by other means. Remit it to the treasury before we start looking for it.

Then we have to look for you!
