"Last week President Olusegun Obasanjo dropped some of his erstwhile ministers and appointed several newcomers into his cabinet. He also switched the portfolios of some old ministers. As an impetus for better service to the nation, Daily Trust welcomes this development.

"However, we regret that some of the appointees do not appear to have a track record of noteworthy personal achievement which we believe should be a requirement to qualify as minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Indeed, it would appear some appointees have been brought on board merely as political pawns to neutralise or appease old players or supplicants in the corridors of power."
