Rav4 Transmission Problem by Larky: 12:07am On Feb 05, 2012
I am aware that Rav4's of 2001 to 2003 have the potential to develop problems with the transmission. I was made to believe that this problem is actually traceable to the ECU. Therefore, Changing or repairing the ECU should solve the problem. My car has recently developed this problem again and I would like some advice on where this problem can be fixed permanently.

Thanks,

There is really no way to fix "permanently". The ECU must be re-flashed and you should be fine. Search this site, i believe there is someone that offers the reprogramming service.

It will come back after few years. But by then you should know what to do.

hi kunle, does the manual tranny of the above model give the same problem?. it's not everyone that loves auto and this would help potential buyers in making a good decision.

Replacing your ECU with a fairly used one will not stop the problem cos you may just be replacing it with another problematic ECU. It's better to get to a reliable dealer who can get you a new ECU, not one made in the year that Toyota did the recall (2001-03). You can check this site for confirmation of the ECU you have or the attachement.

The attachement contains the serial number of the problematic ECU for your reference.

You are SAFE with the manual transmission. Personally i wouldn't advise anyone to buy a 2001 -2003 RAV4 with automatic transmission. Most people you tell just look at you that you don't know what you are talking about cos they are yet to hear any issues or don't want to believe that Toyota CAN have problem.

2001-2003 with manual tranny can be hard to find but they are available. Just be determined and patient in finding one.

IF IT WERE MY MONEY, I WOULDN'T BUY A 2001-2003 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. EITHER GET A 2000 OR 2004 AUTOMATIC. IF YOU HAVE TO BUY 2001-2003 GET MANUAL GEAR!

i hv talked extensively on the problem on the thread below.
go tru it n decide
https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=597009.msg10096208#msg10096208

the problem can be solved, by installing a modified ecm.the problem with the original ecm installed in 2001 to 2003 rav4 is that it fails after extenxive exposure to heat n shocks, [ie the electronic components], my contact in the US simply takes ur old ecm n upgrades certain electronic components inside it, n the problem is solved, he gives a 1yr guarantee!

contact me on skyhigho455 at yahoo dot com if you need the modified ecm
