The Senate on Wednesday confirmed the nomination of former Foreign of Affairs Minister, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, Senator Abdalah Wali and 83 others as ambassadors.
Two others, Hon. Mrs.Sifawu Inu-Umoru Momoh JP ( Edo State ) and Mathias Okafor ( Ebonyi State ) whose nomination was rejected by the screening committee due to poor performance, were asked to reappear before the committee.
Also wife of late Chief Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, Bianca, who did not appear before the Senator Mathew Nwagwu led Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs was asked to present herself for screening whenever the time is auspicious for her apparently due to the death of her husband.
Another nominee, Hon. Abubakar Shehu Bunu (Zamfara) whose nomination was rejected by the screening committee was confirmed by the Senate.
The screening committee dropped him for poor performance during the screening session.
But the lawmakers agreed that since Bunu was a former member of the House of Representatives, “the tradition of take a bow and go” that apply to former members of the National Assembly should have been adopted in his case.
The confirmation was not without twist and turns as some Senators commended the committee for a job well done while others criticized the unfavourable recommendations for some of the nominees.
Senator Zainab Kure (Niger South) noted that of the 84 nominees recommended for confirmation only eight were women.
She noted the more women should have been considered for the non-career slot in line with the 35 per cent affirmative action.
She said that at least 20 women should have been in the list.
Kure also said that her state had only one nominee and appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to consider the state in future appointments.
Obende Domingo ( Edo State ) made case for Inu-Umoru Momoh who was dropped by the screening committee also for poor performance.
Senator Sunday Ogbuoji ( Ebonyi State ) made a case for Mathias Okafor who was rejected by the committee for poor performance.
Ogbuoji argued that Okafor, who was dropped because he was not forth coming in answering questions put to him at the screening session might have be affected by stage fright.
A member of the screening committee, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, said that the report he was originally given recommended the confirmation of all the nominees.

My question is this: When will governments across all levels in Nigeria get tired of these old and failed A.G.I.Ps (Kolade, Maduekwe, Ribadu et al) and bring in fresh people with fresh ideas?

Stage fright? For a potential representative of the president, nay Nigeria?
How will he now behave when presenting his letter of credence to the president of his host nation?
What kind of people are we putting in positions of leadership in this country?

In Nigeria, the more things change, the more they go back to being the same. Recycle the old and unproductive parasites. That's the PDP mantra.

What did you expect You can only reap where you have sown. Or is that not what those fleecing pastors preach to their gullible congregation?

How much did you donate to any political office holder's (at the federal, state and local levels) campaign last year?
How many people did you mobilize for your candidates last year?
How many activities and rallies did you organize for your candidates last year?
Have you started identifying and mobilizing support for any executive and legislative candidate at the federal, state and local levels for the next round of elections?

If you answer NO to most of these questions then you have yourself to blame for the recycling of the old men who deliver to the politicians in power.

Want to change things? Start with yourself. Take ACTION. Democracy is a participatory game of numbers in case you did not realize.

Ojo Maduekwe is 60 and counting and still in government moving from one position to another.  When will the younger generation have an opportunity to serve their country when we are still recycling old brigades in the name of politics and connections in our government.  I am sure it is high time the Nigeria government gets their bearings well and decide on what they want to do with their younger generations.  If not Ojo, Allison Madueke, Ribadu, it is Kolade, Obasanjo's children, IBB's grand children and those cabal's relatives who has plucked the country into mess since the inception of independence.  I am at a loss to find any new name outside those already know in Nigeria.  We are not growing.  After Ojo Maduekwe comes his son, daughter or grand children, what a country.

Secondly, imagine an ambassadorial nominee having a stage fright?  How can he now represent the country as Ambassador.  Nigeria is a one big joke country where funny things happen day by day. Can this young or old man withstand Obama? David Cameron and other influential Presidents in the world.  The Senate too is not helping matters with all these rubbish reports from their angle.  The Senate needs to look at itself once again and remove issues of sentiments and nepotism in their selection process.  It is a big insult on well meaning Nigerians that all these are happening.

Why do they have to set up a committee to screen them when they know that all of them will be appointed. Just to waste money

talk is cheap. You young men that do not know how things are run. Please may i remind you that it is the right of the ruling party leadership of any state to appoint for certain roles like this, If any1 is reshufled, then ask his party member's of his state or do you want them to appoint members of other parties.

Please where is Alliance for democracy because their contemporary such as APGA still lives, or is it that yoruba politics is no more sophisticated ?

What amazes me is that Ojo Maduekwe will, when posted work under some directors in the Foreign Affairs ministry where he once held sway.
He will receive orders from the permanent secretary and definitely from the director of personnel.
It is a free world but how can one decend so low?
Re: Ojo Maduekwe In Government, Again? by akinnux(m): 1:00pm On Feb 09, 2012
Ojo Maduekwe again! When are we going to be free from politics of patronage and recycling? When will my generation take charge of affairs in Nigeria, I mean the 1970s generation? We really need to clamour for change of power to younger and visionary generation.

The man is an enigma of sorts; a cat with nine lives. Rarely would you find anyone so skilled at the delicate art of courtiership in the king's court. . .effortlessly remaining relevant from one administration to the other. Seriously, as a political scientist, this man makes a compelling case study of how to master the game of power. Even though his integrity and competence can be questioned, his intelligence and political savvy are unquestionable.

Have you all not heard about waste recycling   In this era of intense protection of the environment, all wastes must be properly recycled so that they  become of value to the society at large.

The recycling of old politicians through Ambassadorial appointments is meant to pave way for new and promising political acolytes to rise through the grassroot and represent their people at the national level; this will not be possible if they, the recycled politicians, are left to continually ferment chaos and discord at that level.  cool

However, giving such recycled politicians appointments as Ambassardors of our country could be a doubled-edged sword, as some of them may choose to carry on their dubious activities as Ambassadors and end up tarnishing the image of the country further.  undecided
