THE Acting Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, has ordered that all road barricades be dismantled and that all persons in police cells without lawful jurisdiction be released with immediate effect.

He gave the directive at a meeting with senior police officers in charge of operations and criminal investigation department, yesterday. The Acting police boss, while effecting changes to the country’s law enforcement also stated that individuals should not be detained for more than 24 hours, except otherwise dictated.
These changes in the enforcement agency are one of the first major alterations made by Abubakar, who was appointed to the Acting position after the sack of former Inspector General of police, Hafiz Ringim, in January. The roadblocks which many claimed have been used incessantly by the police to extort money from commercial vehicles have also been the cause of many extrajudicial killings in the country.

Many of these killings begin with commercial drivers refusing to give the police officers the usual tip, while plying various routes. A case in the eastern part of the country, where the spread of corruption in the law enforcement is rampant, is Onitsha, Anambra State. A police officer allegedly shot and killed a commercial bus driver who drove past a checkpoint, refusing to give the usual bribe of N50. This is the latest in the series of police killings at checkpoints over refusal by drivers to give bribe. Eager to effect change in the law enforcement, the acting IGP has however ordered that all roadblocks be dismantled across the country to make for better service in the police force.
