For information on prospective schools to do a phD, refer to http://www.aucc.ca/

What is your current educational level? B.Sc? M.Sc? Do you have a chemical engineering background?

What aspect of chemical engineering research are you interested in?

As you can imagine non-academic career opportunities are dependent on how much 'real world' application your research has. I'm personally not an expert in process systems engineering, but the key here is making sure whatever you do for your research has direct applicability in the real world - e.g. collaborative research with industry during your phD.

It's very difficult to generalize in terms of job prospects for a phD anywhere - there are often very few opportunities available at that level (compared to BSc/MSc level) and you need to be a pretty good match with the role in order to secure it due to the very specialised skills required.

What I would advise is doing some research ahead of time (before you choose to go for the phD) into the areas of process systems engineering that are currently valued by industry and try to tailor your research into one of those areas.
