Is public education not free in the US from K - 12? Why is their education not bastardized? The challenge is that we are not doing things rightly as a nation. We should first fix the problem of corruption and then we can then fix the other challenges.

Yes indeed. .  Secondary education and Primary are indeed free and yet you and I know the difference in quality between public schools and the private schools. .
Now, lets move on to University Education. .  Even Community college is not free. . . Now look at the sharp contrast in price and quality of education between State Universities and Ivy league schools. .  The truth is that the only thing worse than cheap interms of Education and Healthcare is indeed free. . .

Now you and I agree that these things do require a shit amount of money to run, so how do we reconcile funding them and the government providing the many infrastructures that we need?! Simple, transfer the burden. .  Insurance schemes for things Healthcare and Pensions and scholarship/savings schemes for Education like the europeans do. .  An American parents starts a college fund for their kids from birth. .  This is managed by Banks to ensure that by the time the kid get to the age of entering a University, the parents dont need to cut their wrists to pay tuition. .  The 401k plan is not new to anybody in the U.S. . . Health insurance/policy is one of the biggest determinant of an elections outcome in the U.S till tomorrow, infact it ranks high amongst monay policy, war policy and employment.

Face it, even if the corruption stops, we cant continue to use these mediocre forms of managing or systems. . .

77% of black doctors in America are Nigerian is that so? what a bleeping slowpoke statistic by an illiterate person. So what you are telling me is that even black Americans are less doctors in their own country. You are also saying that all other black nations have no doctors in USA but Nigeria.  This is shows how low education people Nigeria have in government level. What a pity a country call NIGERIA.

The minister informed the committee that the ministry was engaging all categories of health workers residing outside the country in discussions, using the Diaspora Unit.

He disclosed that the responses received so far were favourable, as they had expressed the desire to come home and establish hospitals.

Nothing tangible will come out of this.

During OBJ time there was discussion like this, nothing came out of it.

Even then, the Doctors (first generation nigerians in US) really willing to come home but it was not realistic.

The problem is one Nigeria. The solution is seperation.

She might be very right, I knew some Nigeria doctors over there who also testify that they are higher in number in the states. Well that's good for them because they can not just pray to pass through what their colleagues are experience back home.

Whether the figure is true or not, their coming home is not going to transform the health sector. Most of those doctors were trained here, they relocated for greener pastures. The lack of cutting edge medical facilities is the difference between the Nigerian health sector and that of other countries.

Blatantly false. Where in the world did they get their stats from??!

blacksta:

Come home and do what.   Come and operate under candle light  - what a joke , what is typical salary of doctor in Nigeria.

5 years plus Nigerian doctors in the US and UK are pratically millionaires in the Nigerian context.

Public education from K to 12 is NOT free in the US It is paid for by property taxes which can be a high as 4% (at least in texas) of the assessed  value of you home to be paid annually. God save you if you default on your property tax liablity and see if your home will not be liened and confiscated. Free indeed angry cheesy

There is nothing free in the West. Things that work are paid for for with heavy taxes. Why not go to the emergency wards of so called public (tax-payer funded) hospitals in the US and see the hefty bill they would charge you. As the saying goes, you will always get what you pay for so Nigerians are simply getting what they pay for with the subsidized public healthcare in the country. If you want better, go to a private hospital or fly abroad. Either way, you will pay!

why do they always feel the need to encourage people to come home instead of  encouraging the people in Nigeria to stay put

good question.

because they know they'll be in big soup if they do that. They dare not even so much as mention it because they know the consequences.

two more questions.

1. Is there a particular reason why she's focusing on the US. Are nigerian doctors not present elsewhere.

2. Is she aware PhD holders are also referred to as doctors.

As always, one of the big problems with Nigerians is that we all feel we are experts in situations that we know nothing about. And this is for people who are so quick to judge without actually listening to what is being said.

From what was written @bolded is where she got her statistics. it is debatable whether this is a representation of the total no of black docs in the US.

However, the bottom line is that there are too many Nigerian trained docs working outside the country considering what the healthcare system in Nigeria is like.

The solution - like so many other people have mentioned, starts with reduction of corrupt practices. Otherwise, nothing will work. Nigeria is not necessarily the most corrupt country in the world, but we are one of the few where corruption is almost a normal way of life!!!

The House of Representatives Committee on the Diaspora said on Tuesday that about 77 per cent of members of associations of black doctors practising in the United States of America were Nigerians.

The committee expressed the desire to partner with the Federal Ministry of Health to find ways of bringing a good number of the medical professionals back home to assist in transforming the country’s health care system.

Members of the committee, which is headed by Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, had met with the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, in Abuja where they discussed the need to encourage some of the doctors to return home.

The ministry recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Nigerian health professionals in the Diaspora and opened a Diaspora Unit to coordinate relations between the health practitioners and the ministry.

Dabiri-Erewa told the minister that Nigerian professionals in the Diaspora were always willing to render assistance but observed that the hindrance had been lack of coordination.

“In the US alone, about 77 per cent of black doctors in associations are Nigerians; they are willing to come back home and assist in various ways to develop our health sector.

“So, it is the thinking of this committee that there is a lot we can do to get these doctors to partner with their colleagues back home in the interest of our health care system.

“We have many challenges in our health sector where their services will be useful, most times at no cost,” she added.

Dabiri-Erewa noted that Nigeria could borrow a leaf from India, where Indian doctors in the Disapora had been drafted home through a carefully planned programme, which made practising at home “more attractive” than going abroad.

She stated that due to quality of health services offered in India, it had become the destination of about 25, 000 patients from Nigeria annually in search of medical care.

“Over 25, 000 Nigerians travel to India every year for medical treatment, which could easily have been provided here.

“We can change the trend if we encourage our doctors in the Diaspora to come home,” she said.

However, a member of the committee, Mr. Bimbo Daramola, observed that one of the challenges that must be addressed urgently in the health sector was the provision of infrastructure.

The minister informed the committee that the ministry was engaging all categories of health workers residing outside the country in discussions, using the Diaspora Unit.

He disclosed that the responses received so far were favourable, as they had expressed the desire to come home and establish hospitals.

According to Chukwu, the ministry is more interested in medical professionals with specialised skills in surgery, renal cases and other fields requiring special training.

He said the idea would be to bring home medical experts who could establish centres to handle the cases that account for why Nigerians travel abroad for medical treatment.

Nigeria, Never good with statistics.

want to beat them all? ask them for anything remotely connected to figures as evidence.

why not think in the lines of installing facilities that are encouraging enough to come work home even for free.

TO clearly delineate duties and responsibilities, the US is very good about identifying Physicians as Doctors.

Vet docs are called vets
Pharm D are called pharmacists
And usually PHD holders are called teachers/professors etc depending on where they work

They have grown beyond the ego thing that is still bugging us in Naija where everybody wants to be called a doctor.

77% false. . I hope you calculated the ones who has been involved in Medicaid fraud thereby ran back to Africa. 30% maybe not sure. We have more Nigerian Pharmacist/Dentist here than medical doctors. If you're talking about quack Nigerian Lawyers then you might have to make it up to 89%.

the only info available so far is the one that's repeatedly quoted that as at 1993, there were 21000 (twenty one thousand) Nigerian doctors practicing in the US! report says that by 1995, there were more Nigerian doctors practicing in the US than in nigeria! still trying to track down the numbers today,

considering that is is from 20 years ago, one wonders, what the numbers r today

but why r people surprised considering the fact that most thieves in nigeria with access to public money have been sending their children to the US for advanced education since the birth of that nation??
please

Well even if we have the social amenities in place. e.g Light, good roads etc. Nigerian doctors in the U.S won't come back home. I don't think you guys know what this doctors make in the US. A fresh graduate from medical school in the US after residence make an average of $130, 000 to $150,000 a year. you can make more if you specialize, so who will leave all that and relocate to where you will be making less than 2, 000,000 naira a year. If you are a doctor with over 10 years of experience in the US, you could make as much as $500,000 a year. So Nigeria needs to fix it economy first to attract Nigerian in the US.

Now, what are they doing to encourage doctors in nigeria and nigerian med students, to stay in the country?

Nothing?

If you keep yelling for people to come back while tacitly encouraging people in your vicinity to run away, isnt that rather wise, kin ma so nkan mi.

Has Nigeria employed all the doctors in Nigeria b4 calling the once that are in america. Most of those doctors left because there couldn't get a job here. yet we have hundreds of doctors that are in nigeria now looking for visa because they have no job.

those doctors are deem good cos of the ultra modern equipments there are working with. how do we expect them to come to naija just to come are start treating malaria with fake a c t's

Why are most of you doubting these figures, Nigeria has more than 5000 medical doctors in the usa thanks to brain drain, and Nigerians have the highest number of educated foreingners in the U.s.a and this has been confirmed.

Still waiting for an explanation on why

1. Illiterates are only seeing nigerian doctors in america alone and nowhere else.

2. Why the illiterates specified doctors and no other professionals like they used to do.

So, your statistic is wrong as there are more that 40,000(forty thousand) black doctors in the States. So, in 40,000 doctor 5000 of them is 12.5% not 77% as the original post is hinting on.
