Nigeria should stop program that encourage professionals to drift abroad as well as to improve the infrastructure at home. No matter the sweet talk, no Nigerian doctor practisng in US will be willing to return under prevailing condition in Nigeria. |

all4naija: Yes you are right my figures were wrong(more than 5000) Actually, nigeria has more than 25,000 practising medical doctors in the US i read it on the net, i stand to be corrected which is more thn 50% of your 40,000. At the same time Nigeria has the highest population of educated foreigners (university graduates) in the U.S.A |

beespak7: All you guys are arguing where no argument exists. The thread title is misleading. The house of reps committee stated that 77% os doctors in a specific association of black doctors in the US are Nigerians. They must have gotten that info from the association meeting attendance or something like that. That figure does not necessarily translate to the percentage of docs in the US. So, Nairalanders misinterpreted the statement and have now created a non - existent argument. I think the real issue is why can't we (Nigeria) provide opportunities for our professionals that we have trained. |

not every nigerian doctor practicing abroad, was trained in nigeria. a lot of nigerians had their basic elementary/secondary schooling up to university level, overseas. the fact that a certain person is nigerian, doesnt necessarily mean they schooled |

The House of Representatives Committee on the Diaspora said on Tuesday that about 77 per cent of members of associations of black doctors practising in the United States of America were Nigerians. Folks, this is just members of an association. Would have been good if some of you had taken your comprehension seriously. Its good to ask them to come back but what is on ground to support them when they get here? Power failure, Boko Haram? Poorly motivated staff? |

What is the source of Mrs. Dabiri's 77% claim How much does she RECEIVE (as opposed to earn) because she is a member of the House of Reps compared to the most senior medical doctor in an hospital run by the same federal government How much does an American congressman EARN (as opposed to receive) compared to the most senior medical doctor in an hospital run by the same US government The answers to the two comparative questions above is why no SANE medical doctor wants to come back to Nigeria after being trained abroad. Rather those who trained in Nigeria are QUEUING up at foreign embassies and doing conversion exams to earn a better life abroad. What is Mrs. Dabiri's productivity for the mega-millions of taxpayers money she collects monthly How many bills have Mrs. dabiri sponsored to conclusion in her 13 (?) years as a legislator |

I think the major point here should be the desire to encourage them to move back home and not the actual percentage of nigerian docs in the US. In that case, gvmt should start working on those thgs our country lacks and that the developped world has such as: security, constant power and water supply, jobs, good roads, good schools, functioning equipments in hospitals, qualified docs (as it's being discussed), |

It is possible that a large percentage of the Medical practitioners in the US are Naijas, (Drs, Phamacists, Nurses etc). An American once told me in Houston that if all the Nigerians amongst the Medical practitioners in the USA decide to go on vacation or strike in one week, that there would be crises for medical help. All the administrations in Naija have been providing power et al with billions of Naira/Dollars for the past 15 - 20yrs without success, why? Who are those with the contracts of importing heavy duty gens dat power Aso rock and all the other rocks occupied by them? Abike and her colleagues know what to do. |

reading most of the comment makes me fear for our children yet unborn.yes because even the system that produce them are poor,a semi-scondary school with unqualified teachers. My landlord son were forced into medical school, today all he knows about is only 2go chating and other rubbish stuff,he can't even write his name correctly but he is in his third year.'i wonder how he managed to migrate to the next level'.this are the system that produce your doctors. About 77% naija docs in U.S.A,hmmm!,na lie ooo!!!! |

If ANPA represents the professional, political and social interests of the 4,000 plus physicians, dentists and allied health professionals of Nigerian birth, ethnicity or empathy in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.and back in 2010 Minister of Health Dr. Onyebuchi Chukwu, said recent research has revealed that more than 5000 Nigerian trained medical doctors are currently practising in the United States of America. I fail to see how either of these figures amount to 7% when there are 30,000 African American physicians (admittedly only 4% of the overall figure) on record The National Medical Association (NMA) is the largest and oldest national organization representing African American physicians and their patients in the United States. The NMA is a 501 (c) (3) national professional and scientific organization representing the interests of more than 30,000 African American physicians and the patients they serve, with nearly 112 affiliated societies throughout the nation and U.S. territories. As usual our clueless Committee on Diaspora affairs (staffed mainly by political jobbers) cannot get basic facts right. |

the 77% is definitely exaggerate. That said, Nigeria's only problem is electricity. Once that is fixed, the potential is unbridled. |
