Soldiers serving under the Operation Thunderstorm have destroyed two illegal refineries found in the forest of Egono and Agbede villages in Estako West Local Government Area of Edo.

Operators of the illegal refineries fled when they got wind that security operative, who acted on a tip-off, were on their trail.
The two illegal refineries was said to have been located 5km into the forest.
Found at the site were hosepipes used to convey crude obtained from vandalised pipelines to the spot where the product was refined.

Also discovered at one of the refineries were about 100 drums, some filled with crude and some already refined.
A source told newsmen that it was a relative of one the workers at the illegal refineries that reported the illegal activities to officials of Pipeline and Products Marketing Company (PPMC).
One of the workers was said to have died at the site but was not allegedly taken proper care of which prompted one of his relative to report the matter to the PPMC.

Acting Commander of Operation Thunderstorm, Major Mohammed Abubarkar, who led the soldiers on the mission called for information on operation of such refineries.
“We received information that these things are going on so we came to destroy it even though we didn’t make any arrest. It is our duty to destroy it. We want to advice people to give us information always,” he said.

Its high time the Govt. starts giving licences to small scale refineries like this. The process is not that complex.

Like how Nigerians like to look away from the environmental degradation that follows pipeline sabotage

It's not just a case of fractional distillation alone nor is crude oil a dual composition of just petrol and kerosene.

Who is fooling who here? Guys these soldiers are business men in uniform. I believe that the owners of the refinaries they destroyed didn't pay their regards before they started their refinaries. In Abia State, after the death of Osisikanku, what these business men in uniform did was to enter into illegal production of petroleum products. So who are they deceiving? The hausa/fulani soldiers are making milions on daily basis. No wonder the elders said that its wrong for anyone to ask a dog to keep a bone safe.

Isn't it amusing how Nigerians think?

The same people that will be abusing the Oil Companies for pollution and environmental degradation are now the ones demanding for licenses for these illegal refineries operated by people with ZERO regard for the environment.

Have you m0r0ns checked to see the quality of the refined crude? No!
Have you m0r0ns checked to see how the gas from the crude oil is being treated? No!
Have you m0r0ns checked to see how the water accompanying the crude oil is disposed of? No!

These folks puncture high pressure crude oil lines and oil leaks out into the environment. The gas in the pipelines and the one dissolved in the oil escape to the atmosphere (since they are not flared). The water is decanted off and left to leach into the soil or any surrounding water body. The 'refined' crude contains much more impurities than the real deal.

Yes, we all agree that the FG is full of muppets who have failed woefully in running our refineries...but anyone speaking up for this criminal enterprise needs to have his brains checked.

This is really sad, I read an article Sunday Punch back page 25th March 2012, where the CBN governor was quoted as saying "Private entities cannot afford to run refineries" I wonder if this guys if you give them a chance what they will do with it ....

I don't understand this country at all

Quite a pity, I always assume only 20% of Nigerians are actually sane. The others. . .?

Re: Soldiers Destroy Two Illegal Refineries In Edo by Concept(m): 12:54pm On Mar 27, 2012
Senseless approach. Destroy indeed! On a large scale Govt cannot produce a refined product & seeing a group of people doing so though illegally, don't they think it is high time to look inward & get people of bright ideas together whether we can achieve a locally refined petroleum products with little resources. Criminals can also be useful when tamed & strictly guided on the right path. What will u call amnesty Govt is doing with millitants, this scenario is not an exception.
