Their defenders aren't as good individually as ours its just that they play such ultradefensive conservative style that it makes them better than they really are. replace our defenders with Atletico's and we'll be run over by the opposition time and again

Atletico go into every knockout game trying to avoid conceding, scoring is a secondary objective for them like cherry on top which is why you can see them play so deep that only offside rule prevents them playing any deeper. their midfielders and strikers trackback so much that they look like defenders

And I disagree that the red card and lack of Costa is responsible for their conservative style cuz that's how they've always approached any big game especially knockout rounds even when they had 11 men
