Okay . . . season is over, time to talk transfers.

TotalBarca has a vibrant discussion on transfer going on here. There are all kinds of rumours regarding who Zubi and his scouts are targeting, and they have persisted over the second half of the season.

For me, here are players who should move in and out of Barca next season:

Goalkeeper:
Gregory Van Der Wiel, if he's available. We need an experienced alternative to Valdes. Pinto has been brave, and we should keep him as a 3rd keeper. This buy is not compulsory anyway. But it has been rumoured.
Total = 3.

Defenders:
We should bring back Caceres and/or resign Botia. I prefer we resign Botia if we can't do both. One of Fontas or Batra should join the first team, while the other should go out on loan ASAP. I would favour Fontas to join the team and Batra go out on loan.
We have Puyi, Pique, Abidal, Alves, and Adriano. Maxwell should be offloaded, he's not really giving so much and his best days are behind him. Likewise Gaby Milito. Messi will just have to adapt to him not being around.
Total = 8.

Midfield:
I am a big fan of Cesc, I think he's a great player, he just has had a bad season. And I think he will come good for Barca even if he joins now. Despite what the whole world thinks, I will support this buy if it happens. However, I am not willing to sell Afellay to Arsenal, cos he presents an interesting option for us if he develops very well.
I think Keita should also be given another year. Though I suspect a Cesc deal might see him leave. He is also an interesting option in both midfield and attack.
We have Thiago, and he's joining the first team. Of course we still have Xavi, San Andres, Busi, and Masch. The good thing is, we can always play any of our back line in midfield, either Adriano or Alves, even Fontas as he develops.
Total = 8

Attack:
Despite the poor showings of VP in the last quarter, I will keep faith with them. They are Spain forwards, and Villa is a record goalscorer for Spain, they just need to find the confidence. We don't want another Ibra who will slow the roll. We build our attack around Messi, and these guys already understand that.

Talk about Rossi is good, we should buy him in addition to Cesc. Jeffren and Bojan should be sold. I doubt they will find much form beyond their current levels. At least Jeffren. I see not much hope for him anymore, he's so injury prone, he even took a knock today.

That guy in Barca B, Jonathan Soriano, he's banged in like 28 goals this season, starting mostly from the bench. Why is this guy not considered for the senior team? He won't be a marquee signing and won't cost so much in wages and fees. Why not have him fresh on the bench, rather than a Jeffren? To finalize, an old war horse like Forlan won't be a bad alternative on the bench, like Larssen was during the Rijkaard era.
Total = 6

So essentially I would complete my 25-man squad that way: 3 keepers, 8 defenders, 8 midfielders, and 6 strikers.

Barça ended the campaign on 96 points and with a record 14 away wins, a record in La Liga.

Sorry guys.
I confused him with Stekelenberg, their goalie. But Barca is tracking Van Der Wiel.
Barca is supposed to be tracking a goalie somewhere, does anyone know about that?
So I'll just adjust my list to 2-9-8-6. Though I am not particularly keen on him as a defender.

Guys. Sorry I've not posted in a while. I was in Lagos and only had my phone to browse with. Plus I spent most of my days driving.

I'm happy our B team won yesterday. The boys are very good & will only get better by playing with the regulars.

Congrats to CR7 for his 40 goal record- it's phenomenal. The only issue is that with the way teams defended against RM in the last few weeks, it's difficult for la liga to claim to be the best league in europe. Seasoned teams like valencia & sevilla were shipping goals like 2nd division teams. There have been too many easy games for the big 2, a far cry from tight encounters in years past.

Thanks Pharoah for ur unbiased comments on Barca- Cules & Madridistas got along quite well until the divisive Mou came along.

I'll send my transfer recommendations soon.

Welcome back Stealthy.

You could also argue that a lot of those teams (Sevilla, Villareal) had precious little left in the tank when they faced a rapacious Madrid that was bitter about going out in the CL semis. Also, Madrid's play is more direct and physical, they run faster, and can slice through these teams easily, while Barca take time to break down the opposition. Whatever the case, if it was easy to score 40(41?) goals in a La Liga season, everybody'll be doing it. Congrats to CR7, we cules respect his game, though we prefer Messi (understandably grin).

Nice we have reached a century mark with the other thread, and i make bold to say that it is a thread filled with constructive and authoritative posts although i was a bit saddened when some folks decided to briefly turn it into some cuss arena towards the latter part of the season (i was involved too grin) but i sure did regret such when Ajanle rebuked guys (good to have elders around you know), anyway, i know this is gonna be another bomb.

Guys,

I took out time over the weekend to feast my eyes on ESPN classic matches, mehn, the Cup finals between Inter and Ajax in 1972 was a classic, with Cryuff poppin in 2 goals in the 47 and 78th minutes, it was as if i was watching a 2011 Barca squad against a Madrid side, almost a replica of the hostilities, the Ajax passing game was beautiful to the eyes and excellent positioning, the commentator as at then ran out of adjectives to describe the flow of Ajax, Barca really emulated them well, i guess we owe a lot of our developments to Johann

It occured to me that as along as an opposing team controls the game to short precise passes, the other side will continually but foul the possession-laden team, i just hope that with Madrid's recent form and signings, next season will be about footies and not press conferences, BTWX, i really doff my hat for Los Blanco signing Nuri Sahin from B.Dortmond, that guy was the engine room of that team, he is a Xavi look alike in performance.

We are more than equal to the task, we are Barcelona

That signing kind of mystifies me. I hope it's not that Madrid are trying to sell shirts in Turkey, with the signing of Altintorp as well.
Sahin is good, but I was expecting a bigger midfield signing from the Whites. If I'm right, Oezil, Kaka, and Sahin will now contend for central midfield roles. Altintorp will probably replace Diarra.

Interesting, maybe Jose is abandoning his big-guy philosophy after all grin

Doesn't matter. Madrid's last few matches just confirm what la liga critics have been saying recently about the lack of quality opposition to the big 2. You dont see these kind of high-scoring, extremely one-sided matches so often in other leagues & these matches dont show la liga in good light. I dont wanna see us scoring manitas every weekend - we need the occasional nail biters too.

I hate to say this but madrid is smarter than Barca when it comes to transfers. They either do expensive marquee signings for commercial purposes or get good players for sensible amounts. Look at Oezil- he was almost begging for Barca to get him, but we let him go to real for peanuts & he's now one of their most dangerous assets. We lost out similarly on arshavin after euro 2008. Thank God we were smart with Afellay. We usually pay too high for players, from Alves to Masch to Ibra to Keirrison to Villa, prob because we go to transfer negotiations looking desperate. Now the rumours are out that we want to pay 30m euros for Rossi, again too much for a good, but back-up player.

Barcelona set to sign Sporting Gijon's Jose Angel - report

Young defender Jose Angel appears to be on his way out of La Liga side Sporting Gijon as Champions League finalists Barcelona are keen to add the left-back to their squad this summer, Cadena Ser reports.

The Spanish champions are looking to bring some depth to their back-line and they allegedly see the 21-year-old as the perfect addition to their squad.

Angel is a product of the Sporting Gijon youth academy and has developed into an important first team member since his official debut in February 2009, as well as making appearances for the Spanish under-21 side.

Barca have been keeping tabs on the emerging stopper for some time, and now appear to be close to completing the signing. Gijon club president Manuel Vega-Arango is expected to travel to Catalunya on Monday to complete the deal.

The Camp Nou giants are willing to pay a fee in the region of €4 million for the player, who will sign a four-year contract upon completion of his medical.

Now this is what we are talking about, sell Maxwell to Mancity grin for huge amount since they love to spend, then use part of the money to get a younger LB like the one you just posted, but i am not sure how good he is, haven't seen him play yet or maybe haven't noticed him.

Well . . . it's not that Madrid are smarter, else we wouldn't have won the league more times than they have in the last 21 years (1990-2011) than they have (11 La Liga titles since 1990, while they have 6).  It may have to do with our style of play. Barcelona always want a player to be right for the team. We don't sign a player strictly for his abilities. That makes it hard to sign. In the last 10 years we have signed Riquelme, Henry, Eto'o, Ibra, Villa, Ronaldinho, but we have experienced much more stability from the homegrown or Spanish talent. Be it Puyol, Pique, Iniesta, Xavi, Messi, Busquets.

In fact, its when we want to copy Madrid that we end up with disaster. Look at Chyggy and Ibra. As phenomenal as Henry was in England, he just could not cut it at Barca though some might argue that we got him when he was on his last legs. Apart from those two, plus Riquelme, I would say we have got value out of our signings over the last couple of decades. Madrid on the other hand have signed more players, especially continental players, but they have not really done as well as they should have, given the huge transfer budgets.

Oezil would have been a great buy but I don't think he's better than Cesc, or even close. Cesc is obviously doing the Henry - faking injuries and stuff - just to get out of Arsenal. If he comes to Barca, he will play the best football of his life, because he will have to impress the fans.

That said, who is this Jose Angel? And how come there's now little talk about Albert Botia? If we are sending anyone out on loan, it should be either Montoya or Batra. Fontas should stay with the senior team, I like his movement. Plus, it's very difficult to find defenders who can fit into Barca's style.

why not say since 2000
where you have won 5(this last one inclusive) and real 4. which gives it a not so wide difference as you want to paint it.
or in the last 31 years
where barsa has 12 as against real's 11.

Fair enough. But this is the Barca thread not the Real thread. I am measuring from the Cryuff era, which is when Barca became a force in Europe.
In any case . . . so you admit that in the last 30 years, Real have still not measured up to Barca.
Were you supporting Real 30 years ago?
