At the ongoing South-South summit, the Vice President of Nigeria, Architect Sambo made a remark about how Nigeria’s crude oil had turned out to be more of a distraction. How right he was! Even though this sounds more like moonlight tales, there really was once a time when one Naira was more valuable than a US Dollar. Two Naira exchanged for one British Pound. At that time, Nigeria had just gained independence from the British. Although the years of colonization had done a lot of damage to the psyche of the people of the nation, Nigeria was recovering fast and had reasons to be called the giant of Africa. At that time, she was on the same economic level with (if not ahead of) countries like Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates. Nigeria had discovered crude oil even as at then, but the main part of the nation’s earnings came from agriculture. Nigeria was a producing nation. Those were the good, old days...
