FEC Approves N8billion For Dredging And Ports by BlackPikiN(m): 7:18am On May 03, 2012
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved contracts for projects of dredging and construction of an inland port amounting to the sum of N8. 3billion in some parts of the country.

The contracts are the construction of an inland River port at Jamata in Kogi state, the dredging of the Orashi River in Imo state and the dredging and reclamation works at some selected sites along the River Niger.

The Minister of Transportation, Senator Idris Umar made this known to state house correspondents after the weekly meeting at Abuja, saying that the approval for the shore protection and dredging reclamation works will include Patani and Aseomoku in Delta state, Ilushi in Edo state, Okun and Kelebe in Kogi state.

The projects which will cost N2.128 billion when completed will prevent the continuous erosion of community lands and destruction of properties as well as ensure the restoration and reclamation of degraded berthing areas and community markets in the areas.

The council said that the Jamata Inland River Port will cost N4.112 billion and will open up the hinterland to the coastal ports and ease the process of evacuation of agricultural produce, petroleum products as well as increase employment and improve the socio economic development of the area.

The Orashi River from Oguta Lake which will cost N2.028 million will create professional and non-professional job opportunities for Nigerians.

The council also ratified the agreement for the establishment of African Tax Administration Forum. The Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku said that membership of the forum holds many benefits for Nigeria including access to the network of tax administrations in Africa.
