GenBuhari: Imagine what Fashola would have done with the oil revenue realised during Obasanjo's rule? cry

Actually, this project is part of the Lagos-Ogun mega city project that was designed by the Obasanjo administration (at the federal level), Tinubu administration (in Lagos) and Daniel administration (in Ogun).

I remember there was a meeting in Abuja at which Obasanjo asked Tinubu what Lagos would need to execute its part of the project and Tinubu stated his needs, but also railed against the Federal Government's neglect of Lagos. Tony Anenih had started replying Tinubu when Obasanjo cut in. Gentlemen, there will always be time for politics, but let's concentrate on the task at hand.

I look for a link to the story.

No wonder Nigeria is behind when you can't even observe that it is virtually impossible to have am efficient light rail project without having to build above-ground tracks and, in some cases, underground tracks. This is because with above-ground tracks you can build the rail tracks over existing roads and some ground structures, which will enable the rail project to connect to many areas. I am sure when feasible they can build the tracks on ground, but have in mind that it will usually be a combination of ground, above-ground, and underground. While underground rail (subway) is the most efficient, it is very expensive to build and requires some experienced engineers to build it.

Common sense should have told him that lagos roads are congested already, that above ground will help decongest traffic.

Can they please add rail to the fourth mainland bridge as well, trains are true mass transit vehicles and will help to decongest the roads, I believe the LASG should actually spend more building rail roads than motor roads, infact, the rail component of the fourth mainland bridge should be done before the motor road.

Kobojunkie:

Na the school system I blame, no be your fault!!! ROFLMAO!!!

So, because the state purchase some scrap rail cars from a country getting rid of it MEANS that Lagos is MOST DEFINITELY building a HEAVY RAIL LINE, even though the STATE TELLS US OVER AND OVER, and also ON IT"S WEBSITE THAT WHAT IT IS BUILDING IS A LIGHT RAIL SYSTEM ??

Worse is you get audacity to accuse me, not even yourself, of arguing for argument sake??

KOBO JUNKIE OR WAHTEVER YOU CALL YOUR NAME...EDUCATION IS HIGHLY INADEQUATE...READ THE FOLLOWING DEFINITION TO KNOW THE DIFFERECE BETWEEN HEAVY AND LIGHT RAIL...NAIJA STUDENT...RELATIVE TO NUMBER OF PASSENGERS....NOT WEIGHT OF THE TRAIN..MUMU LIKE YOU

A heavy rail system is an electric railway with the capacity to handle a heavy volume of traffic.[1] The term is often used to distinguish it from light rail systems, which usually handle a smaller volume of passengers.

In Britain, heavy rail refers to regional rail and intercity rail services as distinct from other rapid transit or light rail modes, such as when referring to National Rail services in London.

In North America, heavy rail can also refer to rapid transit, when referring to systems with heavier passenger loadings than light rail systems,[14] but distinct from commuter rail and intercity rail systems. It is characterized by high-speed, passenger rail cars running in separate rights-of-way from which all other vehicular and foot traffic are excluded.[15

Lagos mega-city project enters crucial stage

By Akinpelu Dada

Monday, 26 Mar 2007

The presentation of a bill for the establishment of the Lagos Mega City Development Authority to the National Assembly by President Olusegun Obasanjo, last week is signalling a new vista in the redevelopment of the nation’s erstwhile capital city, which is also its commercial nerve centre.

Before now, stakeholders have been upbeat about the new wave of attention that the Lagos metropolis is receiving from the Federal Government, which is working with both the Lagos and Ogun state governments to halt the decadence of the last decade.

While still seeking legislative approval, the Prof. Akin Mabogunje-led authority appears not to be taking things lying low, as it has embarked on consultation with select groups of stakeholders.

From sessions with traditional rulers in both states to meetings with journalists, the message is the same – the need for all to rally support for the planned transformation of the city.

In response to protests by foreign investors that the current state of security, sanitation and transportation within the metropolis was a serious disincentive to their participation in the development of the country, Obasanjo, after consultation with Governor Bola Tinubu, set up the Presidential Committee on the Redevelopment of the Lagos Mega-City Region with Mabogunje as chairman.

The committee, which was inaugurated on December 30, 2005, was mandated to examine the current state of Lagos and make necessary recommendations on how to transform it.

The committee had noted that the Lagos mega-city region spanned 153,540 hectares of continuous built-up areas comprising virtually all of the local governments in the state as well as four local governments in Ogun State namely, Ado-Odo/Ota, Ifo, Obafemi Owode and Sagamu.

Planning the transformation and redevelopment of the mega-city region, the committee noted, required the recognition of the major activity centres. This, according to the committee, is to efficiently disperse employment opportunities among them and, thus, to better tackle the problem of the present traffic congestion arising from the over-concentration of employment opportunities in Apapa, Lagos Island and Victoria Island.

Consequently, 28 major activity centres, their internal road systems and the major roads linking them were identified and their planning and redevelopment, with private sector support, recommended as a first step in the transformation plan.

Mabogunje, in soliciting the support of the media for the authority’s work, said that journalists were important in getting the people informed, and should be in the vanguard of canvassing attitudinal change by the people.

He said that for the media to perform the task successfully, they must have correct information and must not be populist when certain actions were being taken, noting that the media should help in community mobilisation.

On the funding mechanism for the proposed transformation projects, Mabogunje said that the bill before the National Assembly had made provision for the Federal Government to contribute 45 per cent, while Lagos and Ogun states would contribute 40 and 15 per cent respectively.

He said that the authority hoped to source for additional resources from the capital market through the Urban Development Bank to execute some of the projects aimed at restoring the lost glory of Lagos. The contributory pension fund, he said, would also provide a ready pool of money for the projects

Mabogunje said the authority would also rely on a robust foreign and local private sector partnership to encourage investment in the provision of efficient and comfortable public transportation, housing and other social amenities.

On current transportation problem in Lagos, he stated that negotiations had commenced with an American firm, Lemna International Incorporated, for the provision of a $450m light rail mass transit scheme running from Okokomaiko to Mile 2 and terminating at the Ebute Meta terminus of the Nigerian Railway Corporation.

He said the rail project, which would run through the Badagry Expressway on a dedicated lane, would compliment a similar one being planned by the Lagos State Government that would run through Ijoko Ota-Alagbado-Iddo corridor.

By the way, the first phase of the Blue line rail project, which is nearing completion, is the 7 kilometre stretch from Orile to Mile 2. The contract for the second phase (Mile 2 to Okokomaiko) has just been awarded to Chinese Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC).

The issue of who owns the road should not really be an issue and I don't understand why people are killing them selves over the matter, as for Kobojunkie, I have gone through the argument with Grath8, you seem to lost in the past with all the education you got from him, he was on point and upon the fact that you were throwing causes at him he remained calm, you have to apologies but if you refuse consider yourself a candidate for the most stupid person on NL wink
