Ibadan in its glory

This country called Nigeria scares me a lot. Look at the picture of one of the main cities in the so called giant of Africa.

Although these areas of Ibadan could be much improved, this parts are what would be refered to in many regions of the world as "Old City". This part of ancient cities tend to retain their look and feel from ancient time, although major upgrades and prevention of blight are usually implemented.

I know Ibadan, and the newer parts of the entire city are much more modern that you people like to portray here.

No doubt Ibadan needs a major upgrade that would run into hundreds of billions, but people should stop talking here as if the greater residents of the city live in huts and tattered roofs.

To ALL: This poster is right about parts of Ibadan that are OLD like a lot of places everywhere BUT if he claims that is entirely Ibadan, you should know he's only trying to mislead you. I have traveled and lived in many places in Nigeria including Ibadan and I ask he post pictures of the following places:

- New and Old Bodija
- Oluyole
- Secretariat
- Mokola
- Jericho
- Dugbe
- New Ife Road
- Bashorun
- Iwo Road, etc

I will look online for some pictures, if I find any I will post them here.

Ibadan,

running splash of rust

and gold-flung and scattered

among seven hills like broken

china in the sun.

No sane visitor will visit Abiriba even today without a bodyguard. Otherwise, you are toast, literally.
Re: Ibadan In Its Glory by Abagworo(m): 7:44pm On May 14, 2012
Seriously this thread is much ado about nothing. Ibadan is an ancient city and needs some maintenance and urban renewal. An action Governor like Amaechi, Fashola, Akpabio and Rochas could turn the looks.

Sorry Oyo guys that's the price you pay for developing early. Newer cities like Abuja, Owerri, and Port Harcourt consist mostly of houses built from 1999 till date. The mid age ones like Enugu, Aba, Onitsha, Kaduna and Jos consist of houses built from 1960 while Ibadan, Ife, Ogbomosho, Ilesha, Oshogbo, Kano and others consist of colonial and pre-colonial houses.

I really loved this poem as a kid; I was in awe at the inventiveness of a man who could paint words so gracefully, beautifully and with such dreamy poignance.

Do you know he is Edwin Clarkes younger brother? I was shocked when I learnt that, cos I always assumed he was from Ibadan.

Another poet in his class is David Diop:

David Diop: Title: Africa
Africa my Africa
Africa of proud warriors in ancestral savannahs
Africa of whom my grandmother sings
On the banks of the distant river
I have never known you
But your blood flows in my veins
Your beautiful black blood that irrigates the fields
The blood of your sweat
The sweat of your work
The work of your slavery
The slavery of your children.

Africa, tell me Africa
Is this your back that is unbent
This back that never breaks under the weight of humiliation
This back trembling with red scars
And saying no to the whip under the midday sun.

But a grave voice answers me
Impetuous child that tree, young and strong
That tree over there
Splendidly alone amidst white and faded flowers
That is your Africa springing up anew
Springing up patiently, obstinately
Whose fruit bit by bit acquires
The bitter taste of liberty.

Still no excuse for Ibadan to be so dilapidated, tho.
