Aston Villa have sacked manager Alex McLeish after 11 months in charge.

The 53-year-old former Scotland manager said his farewells to the club's staff on Monday morning.

Villa have endured a poor Premier League campaign, finishing just above the relegation zone after winning only four of 19 games at home.

McLeish was an unpopular appointment as he arrived from Birmingham City last year but poor results and performances worsened his relationship with fans.

A club statement read: "Aston Villa can confirm that Alex McLeish's contract has been terminated with immediate effect. The club has been disappointed with this season's results, performances and the general message these have sent to our fans.

"The board wishes to assure supporters that we are conscious in every sense that Villa expects and deserves more and we will strive to deliver this."

You are very correct, the progress was thwarted by sacking O'neil. Am sure they regretted it.

Mc leish terrible coach. Why villa hired him in the first place is beyond me. I suggest they (villa) go for Brendan Rodgers (swansea manager). His free flowing football philosophy suites villa and would most likely ensure at least a top half finish for villa, regularly.

It's really funny listening to the silly cries from Arsenal cry babies!!! You finished 3rd with a team that costs less than 10% of the title-winning team, in acquisition and maintenance, and yet, you think you coach "needs" to be changed!!

Martin, Alex and so on. Six or half a dozen. All the same. Average coaches that only add to the drama of title decisions without ever participating themselves. He'll find another average team before the week is out and Villa will get what they pay for. Musical chairs.

the management of the team are responsible for the situation they found themselves this season, first alex mcleish was not the kind of manager that villa need, secondly they sold their key players realising huge amount in the sale but they did not cushion that effect by signing quality players but instead put the money back into d coffers of the club. the team is made up of mediocre players who lack motivation on the pitch and off the pitch. gone are the days when ashley young was playing for villa, he always motivates the other players on the pitch, the manager has failed in motivating the players cos the players do not believe in him after series of bad result.

the solution and way forward is for villa to get a manager that will attract good players to the team, in my own opinion, i recommend roberto martinez, gus poyet, claudio ranieri, and paul lambert.
