President Goodluck Jonathan has called on professors and other academics in the country to ensure a drastic change in the quality of graduates produced by tertiary institutions in the country.

Speaking today through his Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters, Senator Joy Emodi, the president said the Universities Miscellaneous Provisions (Amendment) Act 2012 increasing the compulsory retirement age of university staff in the professorial cadre from 65 to 70 and the Retirement Age of Staff of Polytechnics and Colleges of Education (Harmonisation) Act 2012 would motivate the employees of tertiary institutions.

"The issues addressed by these Acts have been sources of contentions between the university and polytechnic labour unions on one hand and the federal government on the other. The new laws would substantially enhance industrial harmony, productivity and better learning in the nation's tertiary institutions.

"Signing the bills into law are further proofs of President Jonathan's commitment to repositioning the nation's educational system. What the president has done is in the best interest of the nation, especially given the worrisome standard of education because we need experienced hands to stop the decline forthwith", Emodi said.

They can't churn out quality graduates again. How can we allow them to still teach at the age of 65+ when their brain cells are weak? Now we are asking them to still teach up to the age of 70 years. I hope GEJ knows the implications of this bill he just signed? The situation is sure going to worsen. We need young profs to put things right, and not the old ones of 70years that are in our universities.

WTF. There are professors of 65- 70 still teaching in the best universities in developed countries. Some old folks are smarter than the young ones especially when it comes to having a good grasp of basic concepts and principles of a subject. How many young people can do maths these days without a calculator? Some old academics may be lacking in the current infotech wave but that is where it ends. It is not a case of age, it is a case of era.

How can industrial age professors churn out good graduates in this jet age. It's even worse that their years as professors has been increased to 70. Why can't we have young and vibrant people taking over from this old men.

GEJ should produce good governance first.

If all the lecturers are PhD holders like him, there is little hope of producing good graduates.

Jonathan is in the news a lot these days.
Just telling them to produce 'good' graduates is not going to guarantee anything.
Improvements in the state of learning facilities should be made. He should also take care of that aspect because many Universities are still learning with outdated instruments and learning aids.

That's like telling a chicken to lay good eggs. How can a chicken lay good eggs if it's not fed, it has no water, doesn't have the right environment, etc? These professors are ill-equipped and have too many students under them. Class size should be smaller. On testing days, students should not be in large lecture halls that make cheating inevitable. There are so many factors leading to our poor graduates. Putting that burden on professors is wrong in this case. They're not the greatest, but there are so many flaws in Nigeria's education system.

hahahahhahah, unfortunately, the nigerian system is impacting negatively on the quality of our education. Gone are the days when our universities were churning out plug-and-play graduates. In fact, it was from the elementary levels that the foundation of producing good graduates were laid. It's unfortunate we are now living on the glory of the past. Our leaders in the recent past have helped to rubbish the old system yet turn around and play the blame game. The future is endangered. Hope not lost only if we have the right leaders with visions and patriotic passions for change.

The entire system is a crap.
What would someone studying dental medicine spend 6 years in doing?
There are only 32 teeth in the mouth!
Two years is more than enough.

Computer science should be a general course.
Programming should be specific, that is Java, VB, etc.
Each to be studied for two years each.

What is an electrical engineering student doing with Statistics?

What is an accountancy student doing with physics and chemistry as regular courses?

What is a mechanical engineering student doing with English in final year?

The whole system is filled with garbage.

You're right. We're just running a circus show in the name of education. Imagine that i couldn't go to school to study computer science simply because i did not take Physics and Chemistry in secondary school. How ridiculous is that. Our educational system needs to be overhauled.

Abeg, am not a dentist but two years is not enough at all.
Thee are systemic/bodily diseases and anomalies that affect the teeth that dentists need to learn about in order to be able to treat the teeth.
Dentistry is not only about 32 teeth.

Telling the 65-70yrs professors to produce good graduates is like telling the worn-out and inactive brains to impact knowledge on the active and vibrant ones.

That is the problem with the Nigerian system. We always believe in the older the better. I expected GEJ to reduce the working age to 60 and allow for young and active ones between 28 & 50 to drive the system. The young ones cannot step in when we keep fielding and extending the irrelevance of the old ones.

Electrical engineers need statistics especially when you want to model the behaviour of traffic in a network or in power systems when you want to determine the demand and many other areas.

This is the problem with poorly educated, half-baked armchair critics like yourself. You never take the time out to use your brains constructively to churn out intelligent analyses. How can any sensible person call for the flushing out of highly experience professors when hardly any excellent graduate is willing or motivated to stay behind and teach?

Go and find out, 90% of the new lecturers coming in are the fellows with either a 2.2 or those with good degrees who have looked for jobs fruitlessly and see the teaching profession as a last resort job.

Go and find out how much new lecturers are paid compared to what they'd earn as cashiers in UBA...the answer will shock you.

So you think Computer Science is only about programming?
Can you master Operating Systems and Discrete Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence and Embedded Systems and Algorithms within 2 years? Wow! What's your IQ btw? Lemme guess, 13.

Fhemmmy:

Yes, old age is the problem with teaching and research and not just age. Medical scientists have proven that at age 60 the cells in the human body begin to go down or weaken, and this also includes the brain cells. The law of diminishing returns can also explain this better. As they grow older they become less active upstairs. We need younger profs to do the teaching and research while the old ones should be retired and be only consulted if need be. And if u think the faculty or dept cannot do without them, what if they die? Won't the learning or research process continue? Also bear in mind that no body in this world is irreplaceable on any aspect of education. You can prove me wrong.
