Hmm! So umuahia also call cassava JIGBO, i thought my people are the only people that call cassava jigbo in the entire igbo land. Good to knw that we share some words with far umuahia. That means all the words that sound strange to our neighbouring town may be found in other town far away from us. Igbo language is realy beautiful.

Hi folks,

Can I say these feeds hold out the best hopes for us ever meeting common sense in our time. Hope there are loads more I have not yet seen out there but I've read many with despair at our small-mindedness.

My one suggestion: please keep using pictures whenever possible (like for beautiful udaras/udalas here). We may disagree on names and dialects; some may joke around and detract, but when you think that the world may gain so much from new fruits - and plants & animals in general - we may introduce to them, it would prove a worthwhile fun! I believe there's enough humanity (not only exploitation and distraction) out in the wider world to help us identity, and catalogue, these treasures of nature.

No part of that beautiful land should boast all wisdom, or goodness, to the exclusion of others. We all face the challenge of feeding all Nija's children till, 'bele-full'; we too can start active nation-building like other parts of our globe. Ya gazie oooo!!

odumchi:

I think you're referring to corn.

Here are some more fruits, vegetables, and nuts:

orange - ujiri
native fig? - udara
avocado - ubo bekee
oil bean - ugba (aka) ukpaka
plantain - ukam
mango - popo
coconut - aki bekee
palmfruit - nkwu
peanut - asiboko
melon - egusi
palm kernel - aki

Guy,"mango" isn't "pawpaw". Mango is a foreign fruit and the Igbo has no native name for it. Same goes for pawpaw which is a corruption of papaya.
Fruit-nkpulu osisi
Palmfruit- nkpulu akwu
Palm tree- ukwu akwu
Plantain-ogede
Banana-unele

I really disagree with you.
How could you say that cos a particular fruit was not originally cultivated by our people, then we can have no name for it? That's so so wrong.
In as much as I don't know what Mango is called, I think
Paw paw - okwulu oyibo
