The tenure of the vice chancellor of the University of Abuja, Professor James Sunday Adelabu ends today after a five-year sojourn in the almost 30-year-old institution.

In his valedictory speech to newsmen in Abuja after a tour of his projects within the permanent site of the institution, Adelabu clarified issues about the N3billion contract allegedly awarded in the twilight of his administration.

He said, “How can I award a contract like that given the fact that the NEEDS assessment is involved for which tendering and opening of bid was done? It was not even by the university but by a consortium.

“The award of the contract had taken a normal process for which Council was to meet. They didn’t want me to award contracts as VC”.

Meanwhile, after a careful selection from the 123 candidates who applied for the seat of the vice chancellor, 10 were shortlisted with Professors Umaru Garba Danbatta, Raheem Adebayo Lawal and Michael Umale Adikwu topping the list.

Danbatta, a professor of Electronic and Electrical Engineering from Kano State (North West) scored 83%, followed by Lawal, a professor of Language Education from Kwara State (North Central) with 73% and Adikwu, a professor of Pharmacy from Benue State (North Central) with 65%.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the shortlisted candidates who interacted with the Board for a period of 45-60 minutes each were assessed based on appearance which carried 5 marks, reaction to questions, diction and comportment which carried 10 marks, and knowledge of the workings of the university system which also attracted 10 marks.

Others are the relationship between the university and government agencies and other stakeholders which had 15, social workings of the university system, 15, ability to manage crisis, 10, ability to attract funds, 15, and stakeholders forum pulled 20. (Leadership)

Prof Adikwu emerges new Uniabuja VC

THE governing council of the University of Abuja, after months of intrigues and speculation, appointed Professor Michael Umale Adikwu of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) as the new vice chancellor.

He replaces Professor James Adelabu, whose tenure expired on Monday.

Adikwu, a professor of Pharmacy from Benue State, was said to be unanimously considered as the best candidate for the position.

A member of the governing council of the university, who did not want to be named, told the Nigerian Tribune in Abuja, on Monday.

It will be recalled that the selection of a new VC for the university was stalled last week, following the unavailability of the security reports on the three leading candidates, prompting the council to postpone the exercise till Monday.

Professor Adikwu finally emerged from a long list of 124 candidates.

who had applied for the post, which was later reduced to 10 and finally to three, including Professors Umaru Garba Danbatta.

There was much anticipation to the cancellation of the ongoing Strike at the University Of Abuja. The School is currently sealed by the Police and they allow just members of councilThis is the recent development: There are lecturers protesting in the Campus for reasons students and other viewers didn't know of which was due to the appointment of the new "VC".According to Council, the listed candidates for the post of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja were screened throughly, and it was in its utmost knowledge based on "MERIT",which every lecturer never doubted, would not mention names but the professors were from different good institutions,The first on the Merit list is a scholar from BUK.(North-East Muslim)Second is a Scholar from University of Ilorin. (Christian)Last is a scholar from NSUKA (Christian Benin)Now according to rumour the christian factors don't want the first candidate to emerge,so they brought about idea of using Security reports about the above listed candidates, the funny thing is its impossible to get reports within 2 weeks,Adelabu's (present VC) security report got to the school 4months after He resumed duty. That is the main reason why the muslim factors are protesting.Hope this doesn't lead to a serious crisis. Am passing this information for Y'all to stop this "SENTIMENT" rubbish its destroying Us badly either,Ethnic,Religion abeg. New UNIAbuja VC promises to re-unite warring factions

The new Vice-Chancellor of University of Abuja, Prof. Michael Adikwu, has promised to reconcile the warring staff unions of the university, which he said have brought the institution to its knees in the last few years.

Members of the university branch of Academic Staff Unions of Universities and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities are currently on strike over alleged unpaid allowances and non-release of White Paper on the Visitation Panel to the university.

The strike disrupted the conduct of the second semester examinations which led to series of protest by aggrieved students.

The school was eventually closed down by the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. James Adelabu.

But Adikwu, who took over the mantle of leadership of the institution on Tuesday, said his first assignment was to restore order by reconciling various factions and interests groups within the institution.

Until his appointment, Adikwu was a lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

He said academics should not be politicised, adding that what was important was for all stakeholders to work in harmony to raise the bar of academic standards of the university.

The new Vice Chancellor pledged to ensure that the university had the best academic standard in Nigeria.

Adikwu, said, “The running of a university is a pilgrimage, it is a continuous process. I will ensure there is best academic standard in the school. As I was informed the school is currently on forced vacation, so the first approach is to see how we can bring back both the lecturers and students of the school, so that normal academic activities resume soonest.

“It is imperative to reconcile everybody in this university because without reconciliation we cannot move forward. We should not allow our school to be politicalized and education should be used to solve socio-economic problems anind not to create more problems. I am going to work out modality to ensure stability in University of Abuja community.”

CONTROVERSIES OVER NEW VC.
The process of selecting a new Vice Chancellor (VC) for the Unversity of Abuja (UniAbuja) is being dogged by controversy even as a section of the varsity’s Governing Council has picked Professor Michael Adiku to head UniAbuja as VC.But the choice of Adiku, who was one of the three candidates nominated to the Council by the VC Selection Board, is being challenged by six members of the Governing Council of the varsity, who have vowed to go to court to challenge the alleged manipulation of the procedure by the Councl Chairman, Brigadier-General Samuel Ogbemudia (rtd). The selection board had recommended to the Council, three out of the 10 candidates who appeared before it for screening and interview for consideration for the VC slot. They were Professor Garba Dambatta, who came tops in the interview, having scored 86%; Professor AbdulRaheem Adebayo Lawal, who came second with 73%; as well as Prof. Adiku, who emerged third with 64%.
However, before yesterday’s meeting of the Council, some interest groups began to peddle a rumour that Prof. Dambatta had links with Boko Haram, prompting some stakeholders in the university to circulate pamphlets suggesting that a person associated with the violent sect was primed to take over as VC of UniAbuja. Also, prior to the Council meeting, some members of the Council had moved against the varsity’s Registrar, purporting that he was backing Prof. Dambatta. But by yesterday, the report of the selection board was read to the Council, and part of the report showed that the Federal Character Commission (FCC), which was represented in the selection process, had cautioned against the appointment of either Prof. Lawal from Kwara state or Prof. Adiku from Benue state. The FCC’s argument was that it would run against Federal Character principle to have a VC from the North Central since both the university’s chief librarian and its bursar are from the same geo-political zone.
The Council, which had since been polarised along religious lines, shoved aside the FCC report and decided to go ahead with consideration of all three candidates. The Council, therefore, resolved to vote, to determine the chosen candidate. But just before the voting commenced, some members of the Council drew attention to the need for three members of the Council (names withheld), to step aside since they had applied for consideration as VC of the varsity but were not shortlisted for the screening and subsequent interview. However, General Ogomudia disregarded the suggestion and passed round papers seeking for nomination from all 14 members at the meeting.Following their objection of the perceived breach of procedure by the Council chairman, six members (names withheld), decided to boycott the voting exercise, and ultimately vowed to challenged the alleged irregularities in court.Meanwhile, Ogbemudia has declared Prof. Adiku as the newly selected VC of the University of Abuja.
Prior to that, and in anticipation of what the lecturers described as “appointment not based on merit but ethnicity and religion”, members of the integrity group of the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) in the institution, the UnAbuja chapter of the Senior Staff of Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), as well as some stakeholders gathered at the main entrance to the university, carrying placards that read: “We are for merit”.However, the lecturers were stopped from gaining access into the school by men of the Police Force shortly after members of the governing council of the university arrived the venue of the meeting to decide on the new VC.A member who didn’t want his name in print said although the university was yet to officially declare Prof. Adiku as the institution’s new VC, by its action, the Council has violated the 2003 University Enactment Act, which emphasised the selection of heads of universities on merit.
“We are tired of controversies; our students are tired and their time has been wasted due to problems they know nothing about. If merit is not followed in the appointment of the new VC there is going to be another phase of crisis in the school. The tenure of the out-going VC was full of controversies and now the Council’s decision will plunge it into another round of crisis for its own selfish interest."
THANKS AND REMAIN BLESSED.

Nigeria: VC Appointment - Lecturers Drag UniAbuja to Court
4 July 2014 , Source: Daily Trust
A group of lecturers has dragged University of Abuja to National Industrial court Abuja over the appointment of the third best candidate as the Vice-Chancellor of the university saying the appointment didn't follow due process.

The professors who came first and second in the VC selection interview, professor Umar Danbatta(87% scores) and professor AbdulRaheemAdebayo Lawal(73% scores) were bye passed for the third best, Prof Michale Adikwu (64%) in the appointment.

Information available from National Industrial court in Abuja shows that Dr Raji Rasheed, Dr Muktar Muhammad and Dr Nkoli Ifenyi of the university want the appointment of professor Michael Adikwu to be quashed.

The lecturers said the appointment of professor Adikwu, a professor of pharmacy from University if Nigeria Nsukka didn't only ignore merit, but the newly appointed VC is not qualified to lead the university as pharmacy, which he specialized in, is not taught in the university.

The suit filed on behalf of the three lectures by M.A. Mahmud (SAN) and Co also alleged that three of the candidates that applied for the position were allowed to participate in the selection process.

Joined in the suit are the Governing Council, the Senate, the Registrar and the Pro-Chancellor of University of Abuja.

Also joined in the suit are Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, the National Universities Commission, Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia, and professor Michael Omale to the industrial court.

Counsel to the plaintiff is expected to file a motion exparte for an order of inerim injunction stopping the appointment from taking effect today at the National Industrial Court, Abuja.

UPDATE UPDATE
Labour Unions Endorse Adikwu As UniAbuja VC
Abuja, By Kuni Tyessi
— July 5, 2014
The leadership and members of the various labor unions in University of Abuja including Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Academic Associations (SSANU), Non Academic Staff union of Universities (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technicians (NAAT) have at their separate congresses held over the weekend, endorsed the election of Professor Michael Umale Adikwu as the vice chancellor of the university of Abuja

The university of Abuja chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Ben Ugheoke, who broke the news on behalf of the other unions on Saturday, said that the unions had already written the governing council and other relevant authorities conveying their readiness to cooperate and work together with Professor Adikwu in the interest of the university

Meanwhile the leadership of ASUU has denied a report that a group of lecturers have dragged University of Abuja to National Industrial court Abuja over the allegation that the appointment of the third best candidate as the Vice-Chancellor didn’t follow due process.

ASUU insisted that the council did not flout any known law particularly the university Autonomy law in the appointment of Professor Adikwu, as the tradition in the appointment of vice chancellors for the university had always favoured any one of the candidates in the final 3 man list that were submitted to the council.

It added that the council reserved the discretionary right to elect anyone from the final 3 men shortlisted based on merit, irrespective of their positions in the screening exercise.

The union further reminded the public that the said three candidates who initiated the industrial court action namely: Dr Raji Rasheed, Dr Muktar Muhammad and Dr Okoli Ifeanyi, had been expelled from the union and had decided to vent their frustration soon after their cronies did not emerge as vice chancellor.

Another argument the union frowned at is on the issue of the VC not being qualified to lead the university because of his specialization in Pharmacy that is not taught in the university.

They argued that as a progressive university, the course could still be introduced and that in any case it was not part of the provisions of the law.
