UNIABUJA VC LATEST:

Court stops UNIABUJA VC

Barely a week after his appointment, the Industrial Court yesterday restrained the Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), Prof. Mike Adiukwu, from occupying the office.

It also restrained the Governing Council of the university from taking any step to implement the report of the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board on the appointment of the new Vice Chancellor.

But it directed that the originating summons be served on the university’s council, the VC and six other respondents.

Adiukwu was elected by eight of the 13-member Governing Council of the university.

The split within the council led to the suit.

The president of the Industrial Court, Justice B.A. Adejumo, yesterday gave an ex-parte order, following an application by a university lecturer, Dr. Raji Rasheed, and two others.

The applicants asked the court to restrain Adiukwu from parading himself as the Vice Chancellor, pending the determination of the motion on notice.

The order reads: “It is therefore ordered that the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th Defendants/Respondents, their agents, privies, assigns, servants, however so called from taking steps to appoint the 7th Defendant/Respondent as the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja in any manner whatsoever, and from performing the duties/and all other functions of the office of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, pending the determination the Motion on Notice in this case.

“It is further ordered that the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th Defendants/Respondents shall not take part overtly or covertly in any act or action concerning the appointment of any person whatsoever to the office of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Abuja pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice herein.”

The chairman and fellow members of ASUU have vowed to find a quick and lasting solution so as to preserve the future of the students and the university alike.
They will be having a serious meeting today (thursday) and tomorrow (friday) and they plan to hold a press conference on the outcome of the meeting. There is hope to resume this month according to ASUU P.R.O.

COURT SACKS UNIABUJA VC
*REPS ORDER PROBE.
THE Industrial Court, on
Thursday,
restrained the vice chancellor
of
the University of Abuja,
Professor
Mike Adiukwu, from presiding
over the affairs in the troubled
institution.
President of the Industrial
Court,
Justice B.A. Adejumo, gave an
ex-
parte order, following an
application by a university
lecturer, Dr Raji Rasheed and
two
others.
This is coming barely a week
after his appointment,
following
the retirement of Professor
Adebiyi Adelakun.
The court also restrained the
governing council of the
university from taking any step
to implement the report of the
Joint Council and Senate
Selection
Board on the appointment of
the
new vice chancellor.
However, it directed that the
originating summons be
served
on the university’s governing
council, the vice chancellor and
six other respondents.
The applicants asked the court
to
restrain Adiukwu from
parading
himself as vice chancellor,
pending the determination of
the
Motion on Notice.
The order read: “It is,
therefore,
ordered that the first, second,
third and sixth defendants/
respondents, their agents,
privies, assigns, servants,
however, so called from taking
steps to appoint the seventh
defendant/ respondent as the
new vice chancellor of the
University of Abuja in any
manner whatsoever and from
performing the duties/and all
other functions of the office of
the vice chancellor of the
university, pending the
determination the Motion on
Notice in this case.”
Meanwhile, the House of
Representatives , on
Thursday,
resolved to set up an ad hoc
committee to investigate the
roles played by the governing
council of the University of
Abuja
in the recent recruitment of the
university’s vice chancellor.
The ad hoc committee, when
constituted by the leadership
of
the House, are expected to
report
its findings and
recommendations within
seven
days.
The resolution was sequel to a
motion moved by Honourable
Pally Iriase.”
According to him, “this
discontentment is fast
assuming
ethno-religious colouration,
which may spell doom for the
University of Abuja as an ivory
tower and has far-reaching
implications for Nigeria in the
longrun.”
Speaking further, he said “the
discontentment stems from
alleged injustice, discrimination
and unfairness in the
processes
leading to the said
appointment,
which led to the dropping of
first
and second candidates who
scored over 80 per cent and 70
per cent to pave the way for
the
candidate who scored a little
above 60 per cent.”
The lawmaker also stated that
“a
situation, where a third placed
candidate was chosen in
preference to the other two
frontrunners in the
competition
for the post of the vice
chancellor
requires convincing
explanation
from the university governing
council.”
To this end, he stated that
there
was urgent need to stop the
intractable problems
bedevilling
the Nigerian university system
arising from brazen disregard
for merit, fairness and justice.
He however, said that “unless
steps are taken to
courageously
address the discontentment in
the University of Abuja
community, the matter may
lead
to avoidable unrest.”
When the motion was put to
vote
by the Speaker, Honourable
Aminu Tambuwal, it was
unanimously supported by
members.

The Rebirth At UniAbuja
On Monday, June 30, 2014, a new
vice chancellor, Prof. Michael
Umale Adikwu, was appointed to
run the University of Abuja for
the next five years.
25 years after the university’s
inception in 1988, and with over
N35 billion spent, what you have
is a temporary site at
Gwagwalada, that is little more
than a glorified secondary school
and a permanent site along Giri
Airport Road that is defined by
inadequate, poorly built,
abandoned and dilapidated
buildings that dot the massive
but under-utilised land mass of
the university.
Besides infrastructure, academic
development in the university
has also been woeful as it has
been characterised by an
epileptic work schedule, owing
to incessant strike actions often
by the local unions and
sometimes by their national
bodies. Even when in session,
tales of malpractices by the
lecturers and students are
commonplace.
Government has responded to all
these by setting up a number of
visitation panels, the last one
which was the presidential
special visitation panel of 2012.
The report of that panel had far
reaching recommendations,
including sack of the Prof.
Adelabu-led management of the
university and that the vice
chancellor to be appointed next
should come from outside the
university.
This particular recommendation
was sequel to the intractable
problems of the university that
had pitched the dons into two
main divides and several but
nefarious cleavages.
Unfortunately, the government
has failed or refused to issue a
White Paper on the
recommendations despite
repeated demands by the local
ASUU, the national body and even
the council of the university.
Sources say that the recent
appointment of a new vice
chancellor was one exercise that
tasked the experience of Gen.
Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia
(rtd), the pro-chancellor and
chairman of the council. Dr
Ogbemudia’s council received an
unprecedented 123 applicants
from eminent professors,
however only 10 were
shortlisted for the interview.
It was also gathered that the
selection board forwarded
Professor Umaru Danbatta,
Abdulraheem Lawal and Michael
Adikwu with 83 per cent, 73 per
cent and 65 per cent respectively,
to the council. However, a group
in the council insisted on
Professor Danbatta since he
scored the highest votes and his
northwest geopolitical zone
hadn’t any of the university’s
principal officers. This group,
made up of six (6) council
members abstained from voting
as it became clear to them that
the other group made up of
eight (cool members was going to
win.
They were reported to have
blank ballot papers, while the
other 8 voted for Professor
Adikwu. The Universities
(miscellaneous provisions)
(Amendment Act 2003, provides
that the selection board
recommends three candidates to
the council from which one will
be appointed. What is important
is that three persons were
recommended by the selection
board and that one of the three
was appointed.
Paradoxically, it appears that a
good man has emerged from
this controversy, that is the new
vice chancellor himself, Prof.
Michael N. Adikwu. He was the
most unlikely of all the
candidates. He is a professor of
pharmacy, a course not offered
in the university. He is a from
Benue state in the north central,
the least favoured zone for the
job. According to an inside
source, he was least expected,
but Prof. Adikwu emerged as one
of the three candidates, which
became the nemesis of the
schemers that were caught
napping and became victims of
their own conspiracy.
Prof. Adikwu is a thoroughbred
academic, prolific writer with
over 220 research publications in
local and international journals
over 100 conference papers and
10 text books to his credit. He is
a fellow of the Nigerian Academy
of science, a Fellow of the
Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria,
an Honorary Fellow of the
Science Teachers Association of
Nigeria, President of the
Nanomedicine Society of Nigeria,
etc. He is also the winner of the
prestigious May and Baker Price
for Excellence in the practice of
Pharmacy and the Nigerian Price
for Science etc.
The pro-chancellor and council
chairman, Dr. Samuel Osaigbovo
Ogbemudia, who is reported to
have drawn up a long
programme of action for the
new vice chancellor, charged him
to hit the ground running. Not
surprising, Prof. Adikwu upon
taking over on the 1st of July,
2014, immediately swung into
action by immediately meeting
with the unions to resolve issues
surrounding the ongoing strike
action, amongst many other
things.

Breaking News*The leadership of ASUU University of Abuja has called of the strike after the union decided to accept Professor Michael Umale Adikwu as the institution's vice -chancellor. The institution's ASUU chairman called off the nearly two-months old strike following a decision of the three university lecturers who took the new v.c to court due to his un-merited appointment as the v.c of the institution to accept him as the vice-chancellor of the school. The management of the school will throw open the school gates for students as from Tuesday, 15th July, 2014.
