Abiola: UNILAG students drag FG to court

Ten students of the University of Lagos on Monday filed a suit against the Federal Government for changing the institution’s name to Moshood Abiola University.

The students sought an order of the court declaring that the announcement made by President Goodluck Jonathan on May 29, changing the name, was unconstitutional.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports the students want the court to declare that UNILAG, being a creation of an Act of the National Assembly, cannot be changed except in accordance with the University of Lagos Act, 1967.

The plaintiffs also want a declaration that the power to change the university’s name belonged to the National Assembly.

``The question for determination is whether the president, in the exercise of his executive powers, can unilaterally change the name of the university,’’ the students asked.

The students also filed an ex-parte motion urging the court to grant them leave to serve the originating summons to the defendant in Abuja.

They contended that by virtue of the defendant not been within the jurisdiction of the court, permission of the court must be sought before service of the processes could be effected on the defendant.

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.

it is not a question of who employed the Judge. Let us not condone such mentality. There are fearless Judges who who abound in the judiciary and would interprete the law strictly as it is, no matter whose ox is gored. Why not lets watch and see what happens before we rush to conclusions?

I don't understand how a civil action by aggrieved parties is being derided. The so-called developed countries where you study/fast/pray/cheat/lie/forge papers to enter are based on civil actions such as these.

Why you call them names is beyond me. You are obviously not aggrieved, so butt out.

Except of course, UNILAG considered you way below its standard of admission sometime ago and you still bear a grudge! There, I said it; get over it and move on! grin

Hieght of stoopidity.

UNIBEN students during IBB's rule initiated the "IBB MUST GO" riots, which was an eye opener to Babangida leading him to seriously consider conducting elections, which he did.

These idioots are complaining about the loss of swagg and saying sh1t about brand name where it is obvious that there is nothing cool about your rubbish school. Where does UNILAG rank amongst African Universities? What research contribution has the world benefited from your glorified secondary school?

I don't see a reason why we all Nigerians should not jointly condemn any act that violates our constitution irrespective of the intention of the act.

Maybe the citizens are not civilized enough to practise democracy because I can't understand the support for an unconstitutional act by any right thinking person. Today it is Unilag, tomorrow it will be something that will affect the lives of the mass citizens negatively and will favour the goats that we call politiciansn especially the chief goat call GEJ - Goat Ebela Jolatans and his dirty ignorant wife. Mtshceeew and shame all u all supporters of unconstitutional act.

Great Akokaites!!! We don't retreat We don't surrender. We will surely emerge victorious.
If God be for us, who can be against UNILAG. In him we are more than conqueror.

For those calling us Malu, Mau, Maulag, Mauites and all sort of names. Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.

I see UNILAG stay. No shaking

ABUSE OF POWER FORBIDDEN

By God ( The Maker of Heaven and Earth)

But whosoever shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Matthew 18:6

2 Samuel 12:1-10

One thing God cannot stand is oppression. He cannot tolerate abuse of power or office. As we know, all power belongs to God (Psalms 62:11; Matthew 28:18). Whatever power that has been given to any leader of any Nation to exercise is simply delegated. Daniel 4:25-26 says God who rules in the affairs of men. He is interested in who becomes what and how they use the power God has given to them

It is a very dangerous thing to abuse one’s authority. The reason why God puts him (jonathan) there or allowed him to get there is so that he can positively touch lives, and improve the lot of those under him, be it in government, church, Mosque, Academic institutions or work place.
Is his presence in that office bringing smiles to the people he leads especially the youths who God used to vote him into power?

According to Matthew 18:6, drowning is a lighter punishment for oppressors of believers (masses who beliefed in him) compared with what they will receive for their oppressive acts. Is he an oppressor?

On UNILAG we stand, Mr president don't put sadness on us
