Great post, Floiriana. It looks like Arik air has by FAR the newest fleet of aircraft. Fly Arik Air, y'all, or risk dropping like a rock from the sky, in a 30-year old hand-me-down death-trap.

Most of the other aircraft listed, including those used by the NATIONAL airline, no less, must have been assembled from canniblized parts gathered in that Arisona desert breaking yard where neat rows of obsolete mothballed airplanes wait for Nigerian buyers under the relentless sun.

Nigeria has an age registration limit of 22 years at time of registration of planes, Russia with a not so stellar record as well, has an age registration limit at time of registration of 10 years. USA has no blanket age registration limit at time of registration, but incorporates a regime of rigorous checks. Planes are never designed to fall out of the sky wether designed yesterday or 50 years ago. The issue as always, is enforcing an adequate system of maintenance.

Sky Blue bruh, you do make some good points but forgive me for being emotional and allowing my heart to rule my head on this one. I'm with Jakumo, and if anyone wants to enter a 30 year old Chanchangi Boeing 737 aircraft (the mind boggles shocked: 30 YEARS FOR CRISSAKES!!!) on the premise that there's an 'adequate system of maintainance' in place, they're more than welcome.

I don't as a rule of thumb, take local flights and don't care if i'm called a frightened biatch for not doing so undecided (i've always looked on peeps that take local flights with some admiration- they sure have balls of steel), but if i ever take leave of my senses and decide to patronize a local flight in Nigeria, then this list will be a determining factor in arriving at my decision.

Don't get it twisted, Nigeria does not
seem to enforce adequate maintenance systems so I will also be using that list if I ever fly local. Just because in my thinking the newer planes might not require as much maintenance as the much older ones, but I am fully aware it isn't quite as clear cut as that.

But moving forward, that is not the approach to take to gaurantee airworthiness, maintenance is key, and if we need to enforce this through the constitution then so be it. I mean, all these new train and monorail lines we keep hearing about, the thought of those things not been maintained after launch is scary. Its the same reason why some states will continue building new roads instead of just building good roads and maintaining them.

Have you guys checked out British Airways, they have some planes that are over 20 years old. If you check, those planes fly to Lagos and to London.

THe age of the plane is not as important as the maintenance.

Then get used to bad roads, continuous road constructions, and campaign promises that still dwell on such rudimentary promises as "I will give you road". And most important of all, stop complaining about it but suffer in silence. The most irritating noise is from people who do A but expect B, get B results, then complain about not getting A. Confused or what?

You can buy a new plane last year and yet the plane will get crashed if there is poor maintenance. It's like buying a new car and refuse to service it for two years. Will you compare such a car with a 15year old car that is regularly maintained.
My late uncle bought a brand new benz 200 in 1980.The car's a/c is still as chilling as ever and it handles like new.
Such a car that is regularly checked and serviced is by far better than the new one bought two years ago and has not been serviced since.

Any time an aircraft goes for a servicing and overhauling, the manufacturers normally updates such an aircraft to compete with the new ones technologically.
The only problem is that the operators might not take such an aircraft for regular check-ups and maintenances.

If you look closely, you'll notice that Arik omitted the ages of the first 5 airplanes in their fleet. These ones ply the domestic route and are as old as those of other airlines. The ones they proudly reveal are the ones they use on the international route and these are not as old because they have to meet standards of other countries. So don't be deceived by them they are all birds of the same plumage.

God save us in Nigeria.

The age of an aircraft is misleading when mentioned in years as well said above. The life cycle of the plane is what counts that the number of take-offs and landings. A 10-year old plane may do better than a 5-year old plane.
