Imagine web addresses like www.food.pizza or www.marryme.love or www.myboutique.shop flooding the internet! Sounds like fun, right? Well, interestingly, more than 1000 new internet “ top level domains”- such as .app, .football, .love, .pizza and also .google and amazon- could come online beginning early next year, with the potential to radically change the face of the web. Documents released by Icann, the US-appointed Company which decides what new domains can be added to the web on Wednesday show that Amazon and Google have made dozens of applications to control hundreds of domains-including .shop, .book, .love, and .map and .mba. Icann earlier required an initial application fee of $185,000 plus there is an annual fee of $25,000 if the proposal is approved. The most applied-for domain is .app, which 13 organisations have stalled a claim to own, including both Amazon and Google. The applications from Africa, however, are guaranteed to be in the first tranche considered, and so should go online first if they succeed in the selection process. Some very interesting TLDs have been applied for: .lol, .dot etc. Two companies even applied for .sex! But will the new domains assist domain owners to achieve better results for their website?
