Cheap Cars For Low Income Earners? by kcstyle40(m): 4:33pm On Jun 26, 2012
Am in need of a car, but I don't know which tokunbo clean car I can get between 300k - 400k, because I am a low income earner. Which of these cars can I get for such amount, Honda Civic, golf4, Toyota Camry (at least year 2000 upwards) or any other good car you can suggest for me that can go for this amount. Please comment and help a brother out thanks.
Re: Cheap Cars For Low Income Earners? by baaliyah(m): 7:28pm On Jun 26, 2012
your budget is too low for toks of the listed cars, may be civic '82! I dont know the camry u have in mind early 90s? yes. Why not look inward and get a used and well meintained car like Golf or Nissan Sunny or civic.
Dont forget that u will still spend close to 100k on tokunbo:
Registration 45-50k
Tyres 40k
Battery (most likely) 10k
Others: Mats, Fire extinguisher, jack, Spare tyr(some cases) Shocks or shaft or other inherent problems.
Your budget is good enough to get u a decent registered car.

sorry i meant golf 2 or 3. if u are offered a camry 2000 and above or golf 4 for 400k even registered it may be a lemon or stolen.
If truly u are a low income earner, buy a car u can maintain, low fuel consumption, chaep spare parts. etc. u dont have to impress any body u need a rest of mind why u enjoy your car.

To add to what ba_alliyah has said, stay away from auto tranny, considering your financial strength. Maintaining an auto trans car is a nigthmare you wont like to venture into. Get a trouble-free Manual tranny small car, so that you can pay more attention to other mechanical issues as they come up. Don't say you were not told.

If possible, go for a fuel carbureted engine car, to save your self from sensors wahala! I hope you know how much it cost to scan an EFI engine, which you will be doing regularly, considering that it will be used/registered car, which of course must have been abused electrically, by Nigerian clowns that call themselves rewires. Unless you can afford to buy your own scanner. With carburetor engine, all you will need to be doing is cleaning or servicing the carburetor, which cost about N500 or 1k at most, once in a while.

I don talk my own!

You can get a fuel carburetted engine in Golf 2, Nissan Sunny & other similar sized cars of that era. Am not sure of Toyota Camry. Am not saying an EFI engine wont serve you well, I only recommended the other for your peace of mind & for less expenses when something goes wrong.

Why not buy the different parts of a car and assemble (clone). This makes it much cheaper - just my 2cents though.

Re: Cheap Cars For Low Income Earners? by TheMatrix3: 9:01am On Jul 04, 2012
With 350-400k you can easily get a Nigerian used 3rd hand car from good mechanics or car dealers around, but be careful abt the make: If its a German car, (Volvo, BMW, Benz) it will be more durable/rugged, last longer and still have a good 2nd hand value, but you go buy fuel tire and some parts are kind of relatively expensive.
If on the other hand you get a Nissan, Mitsubishi or even a toyota, you need not worry abt fuel or availability of parts but need I warn you that you may spend more time at the mechanic shop than in your house (simply cos its 3rd hand or 5th hand grin )
A golf may not be so fashionable but it would do cos since you said you are a low income earner, it has low fuel consumption, the parts are cheaper and available and you fit still use am do kabu kabu later later wink

If you know someone who works in a bank or an oiI company(or any multinational) preferably a senior staff, you can ask the person to place a bid for you whenever the company is flinging their cars. These companies usually sell their official cars to staff at give away prices. So you might be lucky to get a fairly recent model of car at a give away price. It pays to know people in "personnel" and/or "human resources" departments.
