Toyota motors and other four Japanese and Korean automobile brands ‎have concluded arrangements to locate assembly plants at Kobape on the outskirts of Abeokuta in Obafemi-Owode local government area of Ogun state.

This was the declaration of Governor Ibikunle Amosun on Tuesday at the 2015 Ogun State Budget Town Hall Meeting held in Abeokuta, adding that the foreign automobile companies ‎are in the last stage of perfecting their documents to commence operations in the State.

Governor Amosun, who expressed satisfaction for the choice of Ogun state by these automobile companies, explained that the location of‎ both local and foreign industries to the State in recent times, “is a testimony to the latest ranking by the World Bank report on doing Business in Nigeria which listed Ogun as one of the five most improved states in Nigeria.”

He explained that State’s present economic move was targeted at domesticating larger percentage of capital flight and expenditure spent by both public and private sectors of the State’s economy, saying the localisation of many manufacturing industries to the State “would definitely make Ogun State, the next economic centre of Nigeria.”

If this Country was being ruled by a Chicken, they would have still come.

These automobile companies have had their expansion plans hatched way back since the mid 2000s.

Their incursion is not as a result of GEJ's policy.

Try to follow international news and expand your horizon.

in one instance you say Ogun is getting this investment because it is closer to Lagos; in another instance you credit this investment to Gej's policy. is it Gej that situated Ogun state close to Lagos?

Mention a single federal government project in Ogun state? All the federal roads in Ogun state are bad !

I am not surprised, Ogun state being the most industrial state in the country has all that is needed for the big corporations.
Even GEJ alluded to the fact that Ogun is no.1 in terms of industries.
I am sure some of our brothers from the land of the rising sun may disagree but the Big Big companies are in Ogun

Which state negotiated with these companies? Or they just picked Ogun at random cos ur so called F.G favour the state?
If Ogun didn't provide a suitable environment, they will prolly go elsewhere.
Not denying the fact that the automotive policy played a role but there are assembly plants in Sango Ota and Ibadan before the policy started.

Kunle, scion of the founder and Chairman of Toyota Nigeria Limited, Chief Michael Ade-Ojo, has been elevated to the position of its Managing Director. Until his elevation, he was an Executive Director in the company. He replaces Chandrasheker K. Thampy, who was appointed MD in 2007. A statement from the company states, “As a global management associate, (Kunle) had worked extensively in different operational departments while at Toyota Motor Sales, USA and returned to Nigeria as the Business and Strategic Development Manager of Toyota (Nigeria) Limited. He rose through the ranks and was the executive director until his promotion on May 1st, 2014 to the post of managing director of the company.”
The new MD is a graduate of Mechanical Engineering from the University of Reading, United Kingdom and holds an MSc. in Automotive Product Engineering from Cranfield University, United Kingdom. Kunle is the younger brother of popular fashion designer, Deola Sagoe. But for a last minute cancellation, Kunle, by now, would have been Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State’s son in-law. Kunle is one of the sons of the auto magnate who also owns the prestigious private university, Elizade University in Ilara Mokin, Ondo State.

They were coming already, they didn't need any invitation.

I've been aware of this since 2006. After their highly sucessful foray into India, China etc, they stated that Nigeria was part of the next incursion plans.

Why do you respond to that dishonest TANdroid when the reason for this development and many others is even stated within the article? It is known, beyond even Nigeria, the work Amosun has done to make Ogun State one of the favourite destination of FDI, businesses and industry in Nigeria. The reality of Ogun has zilch to do with the indolent and very corrupt GEJ and everything to do with the driven, focused, visionary and very efficient leadership of Amosun.

Even the world bank now confirms what I have consistently argued which is that Amosun is one of the very best governors in Nigeria and a truly transformational leader from a transformational political party. These are the sort of evidence even sane fans of GEJ or the PDP cannot dispute as proof APC politicians are simply the most impressive and most efficient leaders in Nigeria.

That is the modus operandi of ethnocentric and religiously intolerant SaTANists. They must always steal achievement for GEJ because our President has very little real achievements to point to. In regards to the major problems of Nigeria, i.e the ones preventing our nation from developing optimally, their messiah GEJ is a universally acclaimed failure. Laughable they now want to steal Amosun's achievement for a President too busy looting to even see let alone care about the major issues troubling Nigeria. At least the Jonathan they try and commit daylight robbery for is not foolish enough, in the face of incontrovertible evidence, to pretend the transformation of Ogun State is to do with anything/anyone other than Amosun's outstanding effort.

Ogun, most industrially developed state in Nigeria - Jonathan

14.Mar.2014 16 Comments

President Goodluck Jonathan has described Ogun State as the most industrially developed state in the country and attributed the state’s new status to the economic plan of the Senator Ibikunle Amosun-led administration.

The President further expressed the readiness of the Federal Government to partner with the state government in its rebuilding mission.

Speaking at the commissioning of the Procter and Gamble multi million dollar plant in Agbara, Ogun State, Jonathan, who was represented by Vice President, Namadi Sambo, affirmed that the Amosun-led administration was creating a conducive environment for business to thrive in the state.

* Toyota, Kia okay Nigeria’s assembly plants

JULY 21, 2014 BY RASHEED BISIRIYU

Nigeria’s dream of being the hub of automobile industry in West Africa has received a boost with two key manufacturers agreeing to establish assembly plants in the country, RASHEED BISIRIYU writes

The Federal Government’s new automotive policy has attracted two major vehicle manufacturers, Toyota Motor Corporation and Kia Motor Corporation, which have commenced preparation towards setting up assembly plants in the country.

Indications emerged on Sunday that the Japanese automaker, Toyota, had finally given in to pressure from its representative in the country, Toyota Nigeria Limited, to start an assembly plant in Nigeria next year if it hoped to retain its number one position in the local auto market.

The move coincided with a confirmation on Friday by Kia, a Korean firm, to roll out its first set of vehicles from its Nigerian plant in September this year.

This is coming less than three months after another auto giant from Japan, Nissan Motor Company, unveiled the first set of Patrol jeeps assembled in its Lagos-based assembly plant, which were presented to President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja.

The new auto policy announced in September last year, which took effect on July 1 this year, had raised the import tariff on fully built cars from 20 per cent to 70 per cent for companies without assembly plants in the country, with a zero per cent duty on imported Completely Knocked Down vehicles. The CKD refers to the total number of parts required to assemble a vehicle.

The TNL and the National Automotive Council, an agency of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, had before now, confirmed that the TMC was carrying out a feasibility study on the possibility of setting up an assembly plant in Nigeria.

Our correspondent reliably learnt on Sunday that after two visits by a technical team from Japan, the TMC agreed to set up an assembly plant in the country in July next year.

The one-year period, according to the source, is to enable the country to stabilise its erratic electricity supply, which the Federal Government says looks promising with the privatisation of the power sector.

The team also reportedly raised the issue of volume or the buying capacity of Nigerians as a major factor in establishing an assembly plant.

But it got strong assurances from the TNL that the markets in the neighbouring countries would also be mobilised to buy their new Toyota vehicles from Nigeria.

“The good news is that Toyota has finally agreed to set up a plant in Nigeria; we should expect it by July next year; it is for real,” said the source.

The Chairman, TNL, Chief Michael Ade.Ojo, first dropped the hint of a Toyota assembly plant in Nigeria last year at the unveiling of the new generation RAV4 in Abuja.

He had said, “This is a serious plan that should materialise soon by God’s grace; when we get most of the things (required), I can assure you, we will get an assembly plant in Nigeria.”

He listed the conditions as regular power supply and a big market to continually consume the volume that would be coming from the assembly plant.

It is expected that a Toyota assembly plant in Nigeria will lead to a reduction in the price of the brand of vehicles; create more jobs, and result in improvement in technology and economic development.

Ade.Ojo had said the company was carrying out a survey to obtain necessary data that would lead to the establishment of the plant.

Toyota currently sells between 18,000 and 20,000 new vehicles in Nigeria annually through its seven accredited dealers nationwide.

The figure represents about 40 per cent of the new vehicles being sold in the country every year; while imported used vehicles, popularly known as Tokunbo, dominate the auto market, with about 200,000 units yearly.

Shame on you Gbawe. You and other APC attacks spend all your life abusing and insulting GEJ simply because he is not your tribesman but here you are trying to claim credit for his working policies. Here you are trying to deny the working automotive policy of the FG all Because of tribal bigotry.

Is Ogun state no longer part of Nigeria? Is GEJ no longer president of Nigeria? When companies are attracted into Nigeria thru the policies of the FG, they are free to set up shop in ANY part of Nigeria.

Meanwhile, just like you were embarrassed by the working automotive policy of the FG on this thread, get ready because many more policies of this same president you hate so much will embarrass you as they begin to mature in due season. For instance, when privately owned power companies begin to proliferate in your tribal enclave courtesy of the power reforms of GEj, I'll be here waiting to embarrass you again. One has just opened up shop in Edo state. Shame, Shame, Shame on you.
