Bayelsa, one of the smallest States in Nigeria, is to be
unveiled as one with the highest rate of the dreaded
Human Immune Virus (HIV)/AIDS in the country, following
a new report on the killer disease.
Nation Evening Express gathered that the unenviable
record is already a source of grave concern for Governor
Seriake Dickson, who promised to set up an agency to
tackle the scourge.
Speaking while inaugurating Dr. Michael Awoli as the
new
Commissioner for Health on Tuesday, Governor Dickson
said the position of his State on the HIV/AIDS
prevalence scale is a cause for concern.
He said: “I just received a report concerning the high
prevalence of HIV/AIDS in this State. And that is very
disturbing. Within this week, I will announce the
composition of an agency to tackle the issue.
“It appears we are almost at the top. I do not know how
verifiable the statistics are, but it is very disturbing. It
means our future is in danger, and we must do
something about it.”
Dickson said the fight against the dreaded disease
would be institutionalized, adding that a Bill for the
establishment of an agency to tackle the spread in the
State would be forwarded to the State House of
Assembly.
He said an HIV/AIDS agency would be set up to replace the existing committee, in order to coordinate the policy and.programmes on HIV prevention, awareness and rehabilitation as well as treatment policy.
The governor disclosed that his administration has
“entered into a partnership with a foreign investor for
the completion of the 500-bed hospital located in the
State capital.”
The governor renewed the commitment of his
administration to build at least one General Hospital in
each of the headquarters of the eight Local Government Areas of the State.
