The Ghanaian government yesterday commenced the closure of shops owned by foreigners, thus making good her threat to expel non-nationals from their markets.

The clampdown began around mid-day, when the Inter Agency Task Force eventually took off from the Trade and Industry Ministry to actualize the mandate.

Earlier, expectations were that the team may make a last minute decision to put off the exercise again. This speculation was fuelled by the scanty presence of security personnel at the Ministry.

However, as journalists, who had converged at the ministry debated on what was likely to happen, the Task Force, comprising mainly of members of the Ghana Police and the Ghana Immigration Service quietly took the exit point from the premises, in a bid to escape the media.

Apparently expecting the swoop, the Chinese failed to open their shops. Members of the Task Force decided to double lock the shops, by putting their own padlocks. In some shops the locks could not enter the burglary proof.

According to reports monitored within Accra, no Nigerian was affected by the closure. At the Tip Toe Lane, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, one of the designated markets, business went on unhindered.

Also, Nigerian traders trading in the interior of the Zongo lane opened their shops. So also did the second hand clothes dealers at the nearby Kotomato market.

Those Ghanaians are such persona non grata in Nigeria that we dont even remember them at all.. They dont stand out at all amongst the general popuplace, meanwhile in Ghana, they keep diick-riding us everyday..

^^How is it ''our leaders'' fault? Is it also the fault of Indian, Chinese, and Lebanese leaders that their nationals trade overseas? You need to understand that it is the relative saturation of the Nigerian market that makes Nigerian business people venture into places like Ghana where there is greater demand for their wares, and thus more profit potential. Not everything is the fault of ''our leaders''.
