A fire incident over the weekend at the Dangote Sugar plant at the Apapa ports may affect the sugar supply nationwide.
The plant owned by Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, has a capacity of 600,000 metric tonnes per annum, and can supply over 70% of Nigeria’s sugar demand.

The fire started at the plant on Saturday at 7pm at the bagging section of the production line and brought the production activities of the plant to a stand-still.

The management of the company has claimed the fire caused minimal damages and full time operations at the plant would resume during the course of this week.

A company spokesperson said, “Fire occurred at the Dangote Sugar Refinery refining plant. The fire, which started at the bagging station about 7pm, was successfully contained within 30 minutes with the combined efforts of the company, Nigerian Ports Authority, Lagos State and Federal Fire Service and others. The incident partially disturbed production activities.”

The company’s MD, Mr. Abdullahi Sule, has said there was no loss of life or casualty recorded during the fire incident.

Sisi_Kill: This is what happens in a darn near monopolistic environment. I mean how can only one company be in charge of over 70% of the sugar supply for a country as big as Nigeria?!!

Now is the time for the remaining 30% to rev things up. . .oh wait, I forgot which country we are talking about here.
