Ramadan Begins On Saturday? by tintingz(m): 11:37am On Jul 19, 2012
South-West Moonsighting Committee has said the 2012 Ramaddan will begin on Saturday.Co-chairman of the committee, Sheikh Habib El-iloriy and Sheikh AbdulAzeez Ishola, said in a statement on Wednesday the pronouncement was based on Islamic Sharia complemented with astronomical calculations.
The committee said, “Any claim of crescent sighting is either imaginary caused by enthusiasm or visionary error and such should not be honoured because crescent sighting either by telescope or with naked eyes is not possible in lesser than between 15hrs and 17-23hrs after conjunction.”
It however, said in Nigeria, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Saad, had the final verdict on Ramadan.Meanwhile, the National Youth Service Corps has suspended all physical and social activities in orientation camps to allow Muslim corps members observe the Ramadan.
A statement by the NYSC headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday said all corps members were however to remain in camp until July 23.The statement read, “All physical and social activities in the on-going 2012 Batch ‘B’ Orientation Course nationwide are to end on Thursday, July 19, 2012.
“The decision by the NYSC Management is in anticipation of the commencement of Ramadan fast on Friday, July 20, or Saturday, July 21, 2012.”

PRESS RELEASE

COMMENCEMENT OF THE RAMADAN FAST OF 1433AH

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) instructed the Muslims, saying: “Do not fast unless you see the Crescent (of the month of Ramadan) and do not give up fasting till you see the Crescent (of the month of Shawwal). Therefore in accordance with this Prophetic Tradition, Thursday July 19, being the 29th day of Sha’aban 1433AH, Members of the National and State Moon-Sighting Committees as well as other Nigerian Muslims should look for the new Crescent of Ramadan month. If the moon is sighted on that day, the under-listed Leaders should be communicated immediately:
