Crime / Female Youth Corps Member Strangulated To Death by dove24u(m): 9:36am On Oct 28, 2009
A female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Niger state, has been reportedly strangulated to death by her male colleague . Nigerian Tribune learnt that the deceased and her assailant were both from the South Eastern part of the country.

During the on-going service year, according to the Nigerian Tribune findings, the two corps members developed interest in each other with a promise that they would end up before the alter to consummate their love in marriage.

However, according to findings, the female corps member later found another lover who was able to find her accommodation within the Army Barracks in Minna, the state capital.

It was learnt that anytime the male colleague called on a visit, he was always embarrassed to find other men in her apartment and he did not hide his dislike for the attitude of his proposed wife.

It was gathered that last Thursday, when the male corps member visited his colleague, he decided to “act” since the lady did not refrain from being in company of other men.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that late in the night, the male corps member used a pillow to gag his proposed wife and strangulated her to death before escaping. shocked shocked shocked

Politics / Bank Debtors Deserve To Be Shot - Sanusi (cbn Governor) by dove24u(m): 1:27pm On Oct 24, 2009
The governor of Central Bank Nigeria (CBN) Mr Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, on Friday came heavily on Nigerians whose names appeared as debtors on the list of borrowers of non-performing loans in the eight commercial banks, saying some of them deserved to be shot.

He gave them several knocks, describing them as people of little or no value system, and saying there was the need for reorientation on the Nigerian value system generally.

The CBN had in August sacked three CEOs of banks. The banks whose CEOs had to go later included Bank PHB, Spring Bank and Equitorial Trust Bank after the earlier sacked five CEOs, when the banks injected N620 billion as bailout fund into the banks.

The governor, who was the guest speaker at a seminar organised by the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG), went as far as saying they deserved to be shot. “How do you describe securing a loan of N45 billion with a collateral of N5billion? If not for law, some of them should be tied to a stick and be shot.

“Why should people complain of minor inconveniences for publishing their names in the newspapers? If anybody is aggrieved, let him or her go to court. He that should come to equity must come with clean hand. If there is any bank where I borrowed non-performing loan, they should name it and shame me and that is the only way to move the system forward,” he said.

Sanusi noted that his mandate was to manage the nation’s banking system, so as to survive the global financial crisis. He added that depositors and creditors must be protected and the concern of the shareholders should also be taken care of.

The apex bank governor stressed that there were consequences and challenges all over the world and anybody whose finger was burnt in the process would not be spared.

He added that the problem of the financial sector generally was self inflicted and “our people do not want to be realistic, that is why they said the Nigerian economy is immune to the global financial crisis; and I don’t know why people cannot take bad news. There are problems in our banking system and we must face it.”

Speaking further, Sanusi said the apex bank would soon go to the next stage of recapitalisation, saying the institutions would soon be stabilised and become the bride of Nigerians. He said there was no failed bank where the rich run away and the poor lose their money, but a system that is being ruled with corruption embedded in political and ideological atmosphere.

He disclosed that “it is not a secret that Bank PHB or Habib Bank was set up by the family of the president. The family is just a shareholder in the bank. But the president said what we did to others should be done to the bank too. That should be seen as a commitment to principle.” He noted that his (Sanusi) actions are backed by political will, saying the apex bank is committed to the common year end and “as Nigerians, we need to identify our problems and solve them”

He debunked the insinuations in certain quarters that he was running a northern agenda, saying “Mr Lemo is from Ogun State and he is part of the decision, why couldn’t he raise an eyebrow when the decision was made? The question is who can say the non-performing loan did not exist? If I really have northern agenda, I will have allowed the affected banks to go under and tell Nigerians that we did that because they (the banks) told lies. The decision we took on August 14 was to say that the banks were in grave situation. There is no fundamental human right in regulation. The issue is fair hearing because the banks were run not in the best interest of the public.”

Health / NMA Faults Government On Treatment Of Gunshot Victims by dove24u(m): 11:47am On Oct 21, 2009
Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has picked holes in the government’s mandatory treatment of gunshot victims and other emergency cases, saying the policy failed to state who would pay the bill and that many divisional police officers nationwide are yet to be educated on this.

Oyo State NMA Chairman, Dr. Damilola Lewis, while pointing out the lapses at the association’s 2009 Physician’s Week in Ibadan, on Tuesday, said: “One question which our distinguished lawmakers have, however, failed to provide a workable answer to is: who pays? The government knows that this is clearly outside our purview.”

According to him, “if an emergency is brought to any hospital with a trained doctor at the head, we are ready to attend to such patients and render professional duties, but that is where it ends.”

Dr. Lewis, declared that the government owed the society a lot to make its policies work and called for a conducive environment for medical profession in ensuring emergencies in the nations’ hospitals were safely handled.

He emphasised that unlike in the past, when medical personnel had sufficient facilities to tackle the challenges in Nigerian hospitals, it had become imperative for all stakeholders to jointly tackle emerging challenges in the health sector.

Meanwhile, a consultant surgeon and chairman on the occasion, Dr. Olusola Akute, raised the alarm on the upsurge of cases of foreign quacks in the medical profession.

According to him, “we now have Indians coming openly to the corridors of our hospitals to poach patients for hospitals in India. They are no longer content with referral of patients.”

Dr. Akute asked medical doctors to be more proactive and be ready to play a key role in the implementation of medical policies in the nation.

Computers / Re: 419ers Take Over Facebook by dove24u(m): 11:29am On Oct 21, 2009
Unfortunately, these crimes are committed by NIGERIANS!

It has happened to me and it also happened to a friend. Fortunately for me, it was resolved on time. For my friend, he had to open a new facebook account to warn all his friends.

My Experience:
I woke up one morning only to realise that I couldn't log into facebook again. I tried my password and it didnt work. I tried logging in into my yahoo account cos I use the same password and it worked so I knew it wasn't a problem with my password. Fortunately, facebook guys had also noticed 'malicious' tampering of my account and they had sent me a mail to my yahoo account. They adviced me to change the password which I did immediately.

By the time I logged in to facebook, 'someone' had sent my friends some funny message asking them to click on a link. The link will take you to a fake facebook page where if you enter your password, it will be stolen. I immediately sent a mail to all my friends not to click it and shared my experience.

My Friend's Experience.
Unfortunately, some of my friends had clicked on that link and thus exposed their passwords to these 419 guys. Luckily though, they quickly remedied it when they saw my mail and changed their password by writing to facebook customer service.
This particular friend of mine couldn't change his for one reason or another. The next thing I knew, he was 'online' one day and told me he had just gotten into trouble with some 'jamo' guys. He asked me to send him money if possible. Now this friend of mine is in the US. I asked him how much and he said £800. It was at that time I knew something was amiss. Im not sure anyone in UK or US will ask you to loan him that amount just like that. So I asked him how far with his mum and if she's feeling better (my real friend's mum died years ago) and he replied that he actually needed the money for his mum that she was sick and that I should send it to his friend in Nigeria. I went on to collect the details of that 'his friend' but couldn't do anything about it. My intention was to find a way of getting the police to arrest him.

Anyways, immediately I sent this my friend a mail and he replied that I wasn't the first person that about three of his friends had either called or mailed him too asking him if he was the one. Infact one of our mutual friends in Nigeria had almost paid in 20,000naira into the account the guy gave her. Luckily for her she was on facebook that day and was asking me if I heard what happened to this friend of ours (apparently he had told her the jamo story too) and I warned her not to pay the money as the guy's a 419er. She said if I had not warned her, she was going to pay it the next day.

Now Im not sure if anyone fell for the prank but this thief used my friend's facebook ID for over a week. My friend had to open another one afresh and warn most of his friends.

Its sad that these people have decided to spoil the name Nigeria and thus Nigerians. It also sad that government is doing nothing except rebranding which isn't the way forward. However, I am not surprised, the biggest 419ers are in Government.

Crime / Man Kills 3-yr-old Daughter Over Food by dove24u(m): 1:42pm On Oct 17, 2009
Tragedy struck in Lagos on Wednesday as a three-year- old-girl, Oluwayemisi Gbolahan, was beaten to death by her own father, Babatunde Gbolahan. Saturday Tribune investigation gathered that the incident occurred at No 9, Olaniyi Street, in Idi-Oro area of Mushin in the state.

The 28-year-old suspect, confirmed to be an auto-mechanic, was said to have been separated from the mother of the deceased little girl and her almost one year old younger sister, following his alleged inabilities to take care of his wife and the two children.

No sooner had the suspect and his wife parted ways than he was said to have taken custody of the deceased Oluwayemisi and her younger sister, though against counselling of his relatives and neighbours some few weeks ago.

Further checks, however, revealed that trouble began for him towards late evening on Wednesday, on his return from work, after he discovered that Oluwayemisi and her younger sister had allegedly poured kerosene on the only raw food (gari, rice and beans) he had at home while they were left at home playing.

An insider police source at the Homicide Section of the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (C.I.D), Panti, Yaba, informed, on Friday, that Babatunde returned home an unhappy man on the fateful evening following low patronage by his customers at his workshop because of the heavy rainfall on that day.

The source, who begged not to be quoted, noted that the suspect was said to have been enraged at the discovery that the foodstuff had been destroyed by the kerosene and in a fit of anger, decended on the victim, thereby leading to her death.

The source further revealed that the suspect, who allegedly claimed to be an orphan during investigation by the police, allegedly beat the girl into a state of coma. It was further learnt that his co-tenants had earlier pleaded with him to spare the little girl because of her fragile nature, apparently occasioned by poor feeding.

Meanwhile, in a brief encounter with the Saturday Tribune, Babatunde Gbolahan said “I don’t know where to start from, except that I did not mean to kill my own daughter.”

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State police command, Mr. Frank Mba, said that the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the mortuary of Isolo General Hospital, while the second child of the suspect had also been taken to a safe place (names withheld) by the police.

He said that the suspect would be arraigned and charged for murder in a court as soon as the police concluded its investigation on the matter. cry cry cry
