Governor Akeredolu Opens St. Jacobs’ Hotel.
Story: Taiwo Adebiyi

Knowing full well that the best hospitality offered leaves a lasting impression and memories, Dubai business mogul and Chairman of Jacob Family Investment Ltd, King Babatope Jacob Abayomi Adebiyi brought a world-class hotel to the city of Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria.
St. Jacobs’ Hotel, now the cynosure of all eyes in and around Alagbaka GRA, is a luxurious edifice with 45 executive rooms, 5 royal suites, 5 diplomatic suites and one presidential suite, is located in a serene environment and poised to give its lodgers utmost comfort.

The hotel, embodied in opulence, reflects the owner’s high taste and hospitality. Described by many as one of its kind in Southwest Nigeria, it is blessed with a grandeur reception, life gym, laundry, water fountain carved out of a rock, serene poolside, an exotic restaurant, exclusive lounge deluxe rooms and beautiful artistic images depicting Africa’s rich culture and nature are a few of the numerous fascinating things that are readily available to delight guests.

On Saturday, 20 September 2020, King Adebiyi hosted top officials, business tycoons, industrialists and dignitaries to the official opening of the edifice, with pervading cheers and honour in the air for him and his family.

Basking in the euphoria of the great achievement, he could not but give glory to God for the successful completion of the project which, according to him, was conceived five years ago. Shortly after, the hotel was opened by the Governor of Ondo, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) alongside the Deji of Akure, HRH Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi and the Olowa of Igbara-Oke, Oba Adefarakanmi Agbede.

The event began with an opening prayer by Pastor Dele David, followed by a welcome address by Mrs Taiwo Adebiyi, the CEO’s wife, who warmly welcomed guests and acknowledged the presence of the royal fathers and the special guest of honour, Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN).
In his goodwill message, Mr Tope Ogunrinde commended the CEO’s doggedness towards the great achievement. Governor Akeredolu, a passionate advocate of industrialisation, in his speech, thanked the CEO for choosing Akure for such a laudable project as well as creating job opportunities for people. Amidst prayers and appreciation for the honour bestowed on him to open the facility. He further enlivened the facility tour with rib-cracking jokes and commendations.

Thereafter, prayers for the CEO, staff members and management were said, after which the vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs Taiwo Adebiyi.

At the exotic restaurant were guests being treated to a delicious buffet, an all-you-can-eat of both local and continental dishes.

The Deji of Akure, Oba Aladelusi in his interview with Spotlight Africa Magazine at the end of the event, applauded the Chairman of St. Jacobs’ Hotel for establishing such a laudable investment in Akure. Describing the city as a peaceful place, he encouraged Akure’s sons and daughters abroad to come home and invest in the city.

Meanwhile, a grand supermarket, salon, and restaurant are a few other features of the much-anticipated annex of the hotel currently under construction. Without a doubt, this will pave the way for a lively atmosphere engendered by the ease of shopping for residents of Alagbaka and neighbouring areas.

Fashion / How I Started My Fashion Brand - CYPAID, Designer / Entrepreneur by eyesoflagostv: 10:39am On Apr 24, 2020
Eyes of lagos interview with designer / entrepreneur CYPAID

1.Tell us a little about yourself

My name is cynosure Neville , also known as Cypaid, founder and creative director of Designed by Neville, but most people call me cynosure because I used to be the editor in chief for cynosure magazine.
Have a bachelor degree in Bio medical laboratory technology and also have an international business certificate from san Francisco city collage.

I grew up in a diversed and mixed background. I was born in Nigeria, raised Jamaica & UK before finaly settling down in the United states, San Francisco to be specific.

So I think being raised in multiple cities has made me open to all different types of people, cultures, food etc. I’ve always felt lucky to be from different sides of the world.

I love travelling and living life to the fullest, like there is no tomorrow. I try to find happiness in small things of life.

I call myself a fashion scribe, because I’m so self conscious when it comes to fashion but I’m not a slave to trend.

2. Did you always know that you wanted to build your own brand?

That’s a big yes, have always loved fashion from infancy. My early curiosity for trends made me to be obsessed with fashion, so that channeled my love toward pursuing a career in fashion, I’ve always been very strong-minded and opinionated about fashion; what I want to wear, what looks best on others, and just about fashion in general.

I love the power of clothing and the transformative quality of choosing the right clothes to wear. When I was in middle school, I will use Sharpie, water color and even screen print my own clothes so as to stand out from the rest kids in class.

I took pride in having the best outfit, or at least making the biggest effort. lol.
So now that I’m much older I said to myself it’s time to turn this hobby or obsession into a full time business.

3 How did you come up with this concept?

I tell people I’m an old soul trapped in a young body, because I love to inspire and motivate people, I have a penchant to imbibe the self independent culture into people, encourage them to hustle hard and believe in themselves. My first collection inscription was “MAKING MONEY MOVES “, and my second collection which will be launched this fall got the ” SECURE THE BAG” inscription, to me fashion is a language. So I wanted to communicate with my designs, bring beauty and positive vibes into the world through fashion.

3.Whats your vision for the future of your brand?

Right now I’m only selling online, I hope to do pop up shops next year, showcase my brand on the runway, and also have my own shop at the mall , I’m also working on collaborating with top fashion houses, I cant really give out names right now, the talk is still ongoing, but as soon as I get the deal sealed you will be the first to know

5.What advice do you have to give to inspiring creatives?

Just don’t give up on your goals, it will eventually pay oneday. Yes I know its not easy, so you have to be passion and goal driven, strivehard to excel and put your best in whatever you do, network with innovative and like minded people and get yourself a dedicated team.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has suspended sales of foreign exchange to Bureau de Change (BDCs) until the COVID-19 pestilence is over.

Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, The disclosure was contained in a response to a request by Association of Bureau de Change Operators and signed by A.S Jibrin on behalf of the director, trade and exchange department, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

It read in parts: “Based on your recommendations, sales of foreign currency to members of ABCON is hereby suspended until further notice.”

Prior to this, the association requested the CBN through a “Letter of Recommendation to Declare Market Holiday on Our Weekly Bidding Pending the Reopening of Our Nation’s Borders and the Control of COVID-19.”

CBN explained: “It is on record that the outbreak of the coronavirus has disrupted socio-economic activities not only in Nigeria but across the world.

“The situation is further worsened with the crash of crude oil prices in the international market with its attendant effect on economic activities.”

The apex bank added that COVID-19 had led several countries to take decisive measures to contain the spread of the outbreak with Nigeria inclusive.

These measures include among others, the total shutdown of air and land borders across the world leading to a reduction in travels and demand for foreign exchange by travellers.

“Furthermore, the Government’s directive to restrict gatherings to not more than twenty (20) persons is aimed at reducing a person to person contact and curb the transmission of the Covid-19 virus meant that the concentration of the BDC encashers at disbursement centres would pose health challenges”.

A resident of Onipanu area in Mushin, Lagos Mainland has expressed his concerns on the activities of herdsmen and some alleged miscreants in the community.

Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, The resident who preferred anonymity, in a letter written to the State Government authorities lamented the security threat posed by the above mention persons to the residents of the community.

According to him; “The cattle rearers have utter disregard for the safety and health challenges this may cause or may have caused the residents.

“Before the new Lagos to Ibadan railway track construction began, their cattle trading activities were carried out on the other side of the old railway track, but as soon as the construction work commenced, the cow merchants shifted their activities to the main entrance of my apartment which made it very difficult to gain entry to the flat I occupy with my family.

“Majority of those living around that area are living in fear of being attacked by those traders who are equally touts,” he added.

He further lamented the activities of some alleged hoodlums in the community. He alleged that the community has become a hub for social vices such as drug abuse, sexual and domestic

He warned that the outbreak of an epidemic looms if the government does not intervene upon receipt of his complaint.

He urged the government to come to the rescue of residents of the community, stressing that the activities of the herdsmen and the hoodlums add no commercial value to the development of the community and state at large.

What You Should Know About Nigerian Air Force Recruitment
source: https://eyesoflagos.com/2020/01/22/what-you-should-know-about-nigerian-air-force-recruitment/

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has said it is presently not in the process of recruiting Nigerians into the Air Force, stressing that whenever such an exercise is imminent, members of the public would be duly informed through the NAF official website.

Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information made this known in a statement on Wednesday.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has been drawn to the activities of some unscrupulous individuals who are fraudulently extorting money from unsuspecting Nigerians under the guise of recruiting them into the NAF.

“These fraudsters deceive prospective applicants to pay certain amounts of money into bank accounts with the false assurance that they would be guaranteed recruitment into the NAF. It is disheartening to note that some people have been swindled by these unscrupulous individuals despite repeated warnings and spirited efforts by the NAF, over the years, to enlighten the public about the nefarious activities of such fraudsters.

In view of this, it has become necessary to state firstly that the NAF is not currently conducting any recruitment exercise. Whenever such an exercise is imminent, members of the public would be duly informed through the NAF official website, www.airforce.mil.ng, as well as on our official social media handles.

“The public is also once more reminded that the recruitment and selection process into the NAF is ‘FREE OF CHARGE’ and without any form of gratification.

“Furthermore, the NAF recruitment process is devoid of recruitment agents, hence anyone who claims to be operating in such capacity on behalf of the NAF is a fraudster.

“The NAF wishes to advise prospective applicants to promptly report anyone who solicits for payments for recruitment into the Service to the nearest NAF Unit or Nigeria Police Post”.

Political Scientist Precious Daniel Wins Face Of Nigeria In Lagos
source: https://eyesoflagos.com/2019/11/25/political-scientist-precious-daniel-wins-face-of-nigeria-in-lagos/

Not Every dream requires sleep. Hard work is one of the best ways to accomplish your dreams says the new FACE OF NIGERIA 2019/20 QUEEN PRECIOUS DANIEL, a 23 year old political science graduate of the institute of business technology.

The pursuit for pageantry has always been an idea she’s had right from when she was 8yrs old, every Sunday when she dresses for church , she would stand in front of a mirror calling herself Cinderella, doing some imaginary rehearsals and cat walk.

She was keen on becoming a beauty queen and had participated in several pageants, where she faced her greatest fears. She was discouraged as it seemed like you had to know someone before you could win any beauty pageant. Undeterred by this challenge, she decided to take the bull by its horn, she decided to making it a life style, making sure she rehearsed every step took, worked on herself till she knew she was ready to face any beauty pageant stage. “I remember using my phone to watch miss Nigeria on YouTube a countless number of times, I had memorized almost every step, every wave and every question at this point I felt I was ready or any beauty pageant and entered
for the FACE OF IDOMA 2017/18 beauty pageant” she says.

Her hard work paid off as she emerged 1ST runner up in the FACE OF IDOMA 2017/18 beauty pageant. She became convinced that all it took was, a pinch of hard work, sprinkled with a bit of determination, rubbed in confidence and you’d become an unstoppable force. After her reign she, creatively searched on line or any pageantry that wasn’t just random, she wanted something more than just pageantry, she wanted a pageantry that would be a huge task. Face of Nigeria, just as the name sounds, seemed to her the next big stage in her career. She enrolled and although it was a tough one, but she remained focus on the price, her first fear was the fact that, they had contestants who came from outside Nigeria, girls who were top models and former beauty queens, tall beautiful girls, intelligent etc.

“I remember my first day in camp, it was as if I was in the wrong place, everyone kept to themselves, I was shy at first, then I said to myself Precious let do this, and the following day I had made 5 new friends” she says laughing out loud. “On the final day, during the announcement of the winners, my heart was pounding as they had just called the second WINNER and my name wasn’t mentioned. I couldn’t believe I was going to be in the top spot, I felt I had deserved either the 2nd runner up or the 3rd runner up” She says.

Hard work paid off again as she was crowned the FACE OF NIGERIA 2019/20. When asked what the crown meant to her she said, “it means I’m improving, I’m getting better by the day, its one step at a time until I’m MISS NIGERIA.

She intends to make the world a better place starting with Nigeria, where her pet project is set on making Nigeria green. Her GREEN ENVIRONMENT, BLUE HEALTH project is set to feature in most states in Nigeria. The new face of Nigeria is set to make Nigeria proud, she recently got a management deal with FINISH MEDIA and she promises to do the best she can. Her advice to everyone who wishes to become something is, work hard with the right mindset, and then shoot for the stars.

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) Confident Buhari Will Sign CAMA Bill’

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has expressed optimism that President Muhammadu Buhari, would sign the amended Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 1990.

Acting registrar-general, CAC, Lady Azuka Azinge, said this yesterday at a stakeholders’ conference organised by the Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CICAN) in Abuja.

The conference has as its theme: Next Level Agenda: Unlocking the Under-utilised Potentials in the Non-oil Sector; The Role of MSMEs.” She explained that the CAMA has been in operation since 1990, but concerns by the private sector led to the amendments to the bill as many of its provisions were not in tune with current business realities. She said having been passed by the national assembly, the bill is on the table of President Buhari, waiting for assent.

According to her, the bill seeks to establish an efficient means of regulating businesses, minimise the compliance burden of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), enhance transparency and shareholder engagement and promote a friendly business climate in Nigeria.

She also said the amendment is designed to enhance the Commission’s supervisory and regulatory powers.Azinge said the signing into law of the bill would go a long way in helping the Commission realise its dream of being a world – class companies registry.

Group Petitions NASS over NPA’s Pronouncement On Secure Anchorage

A group in the nation’s maritime industry, Association of Professionals for Safety in Shipping in Nigeria (APOSSIN), has petitioned the National Assembly over the recent pronouncement of the Nigerian Ports Authority, (NPA), instructing shipping operators to stop paying for personalised security services offered in the Secured Ancourage Area (SAA) being operated by the Nigerian Navy in collaboration with private firm, Ocean Marine Solutions (OMS) Limited.

Recall that the NPA recently disclosed that it is set to take delivery of patrol vessels to enhance waterfront security at the ports, therefore directing shipping companies not to pay any anchorage dues to private security firms as it would take responsibility to secure vessels at the ports anchorage.

But, in a petition to the NASS, the group had noted that the directive was not only ill-advised but also counter-productive, stressing that NPA does not have the authority to make such pronouncement on an arrangement by another agency of government to deliver on its mandate. Tbe Chairman of APOSSIN, Adewale Adebayo Oluwafemi and Secretary, Emeka Peter Ikechukwu, who accused the NPA of not been able to secure facilities around the port, yet it is after SAA that has brought some safety and trust for global shipping lines calling at the nation’s ports in Lagos.

APOSSIN further noted that this is made evident from the complaint by the General Manager of Greenview Development Nigeria Limited, Apapa – Lagos, Yakubu Abdullahi, of constant attack of its terminal by sea thieves.

They noted that it will not be out of place for NPA to concentrate of providing security for ships that are berthed at the nation’s ports first.

Eyes Of Lagos learnt that, They explained that the “SAA is an initiative of the Nigerian Navy and OMS that has brought stability and security to ships calling at the nation’s ports. SAA was created because of demands from ships making port calls to Lagos to give the captains extra comfort while at anchorage awaiting allocation of berthing space. The facility, we gathered is intended to collaborate government efforts and not a replacement.

“Just like on land where organisations and even individuals on their own free will employ private security to secure their assets, inspite all the available security provided by government; the facility is for those that wish to utilise the services.

“It is operated by the Nigerian Navy but logistically supported by OMS – a private-sector initiative to add value to government efforts.

“It was established in collaboration with Nigerian Navy on 27 February, 2013 to offer dedicated security patrols services for vessels that demand extra protection while waiting offshore Lagos for berth allocation or conducting Ship-To-Ship, (STS) operations.

“It is purely a service rendered on demand and was never made compulsory for all vessels making port calls to Lagos. It provides a minimum of three security boats patrolling the area 24/7/365. The boats are operated by the Navy but logistically supported by OMS.

“We are aware that in the past six years it has operated, the facility has delivered 100 per cent success as there has not been any successful pirate attack on any vessels using the SAA. This success story has made it a comfort zone and preferred location for captains of vessels coming to Lagos.

“It is a security solution that is working. We gathered that with the agreement, 26 vessels that opted to utilize the service are being protected in the SAA as at today and three are conducting STS. The shipping community should not be deceived by the NPA announcement that security is free, without any physical presence of some deterrence. If the patrol boats OMS is supporting to protect the area are withdrawn today without any immediate replacements, the vessels would be exposed to real grave risk.

“While NPA is waiting for the arrival of the boats promised, the wise counsel is not to disparage the existing working solution to avoid chaos in Lagos waters.

“Another point to note is that procurement of boats is only a fraction of the solution, the logistics to run, maintain and keep them in water all the time is very huge and even much greater. “Experience has shown that this is seldom provided in sufficient quantities to the services, of course because of other competing needs of national importance. This is the gap OMS is filling for the Navy to maintain the required constant presence at the SAA.

“OMS is working under the Nigerian Navy (not NPA) operates the Secure Anchorage Area, a relationship that has been communicated and NPA duly acknowledged the occurrence by publishing the Marine Notice in 2014.

“Just like the Nigerian Navy cannot proscribe any arrangements NPA has with any company to deliver on it’s mandates, NPA has no authority to disband an arrangement put together by the Nigerian Navy that is providing security offshore for members of the shipping community that choose to utilize the services.

“The SAA arrangement is working and has helped to reduce the piracy occurrence in the region (check the IMB latest report on the Gulf of Guinea) and most importantly, at no cost to government.

“The 2,000.00 dollars charge per day is not anchorage dues as errenousely described by the NPA but simply to offset the cost of acquisition of the patrol boats, and provision of the logistics support needed to operate them to achieve the 24/7/365 presence required to deter the criminal elements.

“The SAA is therefore complementing government efforts rather than opposing them and should be encouraged as a successful home-grown solution to make the nation’s maritime domain safer and more secure.”

The group further noted that in the SAA, OMS is working assiduously to support the Nigerian Navy to deliver on its mandate to the nation and Nigerians in general.

They also stressed that the SAA is an excellent example of private-sector support to government. The $2,000.00 charged barely covers the cost of fuel and assets maintenance for maintaining 100 percent presence required to keep the criminal gangs away from international shipping to Lagos.

Julius Berger To Close Down Another Section Of Lagos–Ibadan Expressway — FRSC
source: https://eyesoflagos.com/2019/10/18/julius-berger-to-close-down-another-section-of-lagos-ibadan-expressway-frsc/

The Federal Road Safety Corps has said that Julius Berger on Friday said that it intends to extend the reconstruction work on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway from Magboro to The Punch Newspaper section of the road from October 21 to January 31, 2020.

Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, Mr Clement Oladele, Ogun Sector Commander of FRSC, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Ota, Ogun State, that the development was to enable the company to begin rehabilitation work on the 1.3 kilometres stretch of the Expressway from Magboro to Punch newspaper building from Monday.

Accordingly to him, the rehabilitation work will cause a temporary diversion of the Lagos bound traffic to the Sagamu bound carriageway from Magboro.

“This temporary diversion of traffic will transfer the Lagos inbound traffic to the same carriageway conveying traffic outward Lagos.

“Thereby making both the traffic inward and outward Lagos accommodated on the same section of the expressway within the 1.3 kilometres stretch of the road from Magboro to PUNCH in Ogun State,” he said.

NAN reports that there has a partial closure of the Lagos end of the expressway from September 2 for the reconstruction work on the 600-metres stretch between Ojodu Berger and the beginning of Kara Bridge.

The sector commander advised motorists to take note of the development and plan their trips by allowing more time for their travelling time, in view of the construction work that would narrow the carriageway which may impair traffic.

“Motorists are also enjoined to observe lane discipline and avoid driving against traffic, as violators risk their vehicle being impounded and liable to payment of N50,000 naira traffic fine,” he said.

The FRSC boss cautioned motorists to drive within the maximum speed limit of 50km per hour, the maximum speed at construction zones as prescribed by the National Road Traffic Regulations, 2012, to avoid road crashes.

Labour Suspends Planned Strike
source: https://eyesoflagos.com/2019/10/16/labour-suspends-planned-strike/

Organised labour on Tuesday demanded documents from the Federal Government to support its claims during a negotiation on the consequential adjustments on the New National Minimum Wage.

Labour suspended its planned strike as both sides agreed to continue negotiations today (Wednesday).

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, at the opening of the meeting, said the demand of the workers before the negotiation would shut down the economy.

But a source at the five hours meeting, which started at 2.45pm, revealed that the labour leaders and the government’s representatives made concessions. He added that they failed to reach a definite agreement on the salary adjustments.

Before the meeting, labour was demanding 29 per cent salary increase for officers at salary grade levels 07 to 14 and 24 per cent adjustment for officers at salary grade levels 15 to 17, while the Federal Government proposed an 11 per cent increase for officers at grade level 07 to 14 and 6.5 per cent adjustment for workers at grade level 15 to 17.

The meeting broke into sessions on a few occasions when labour and government teams had to leave the general session to meet their teams separately before continuing with the joint session.

It was learnt that the labour team demanded a number of documents from government’s team to verify claims made by the Federal Government during the negotiation.

According to Eyes Of Lagos source, who was part of the workers’ team at the meeting, labour lowered its position to 20 and 25 per cent, while government increased its offer to 17 per cent for workers at grade levels 07 to 09, 15 per cent for those at grade levels 10 to 14 and 12 per cent for workers at grade level 15 to 17.

The source said, “The two sides made concessions but in addition to the Federal Government concession, the team also introduced innovations which is strange to us. But we have asked for documents to back that position. However, whatever figures presented now at the meeting are mere proposals that labour is going home to examine critically before tomorrow’s (today) meeting.”

Eyes Of Lagos also learnt that the minister pleaded with the union leaders to consider the present state of the nation’s economy in their demands.

He said after the meeting that he was happy that there was no walkout or fight during the deliberation.

Briefing journalists, Ngige said, “I serve as the conciliator so I am not on any side. I belong to the two parties. As you can see, there was no fight and no walkout. That shows thatthings are going on well. We will continue tomorrow (Wednesday) because of areas that we could not touch.”

Addressing the media, the Nigeria Labour Congress Deputy President, Amaechi Asugwuni said, “For us at labour, the matters are straightforward but negotiations are still going on. We thought the meeting would be concluded today but that prediction was not successful. Therefore, adjournment became necessary. The struggle will still continue.

“We will meet again tomorrow (Wednesday) and that meeting will decide the fate of both parties. So far, commitments have been shown by both parties but we believe that the areas that are still in contest are critical and we urge government to see how it can shift ground positively. We expect that Wednesday’s meeting will end positively.”

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Folashade Yemi-Esan, who spoke for the government team added, “We have worked together and both sides have made a lot of concessions but we discovered that there are areas to be ironed out. There are some documents and information that are being sought and which we are providing. We will continue tomorrow with the belief that we will reach an agreement.

But earlier on Tuesday, the Federal Government said the economy would be shut down, if it met the demands of the organised labour on the New National Minimum Wage.

Ngige, who stated this during the Federal Government’s meeting with labour leaders in Abuja, said the unionists should not misinform workers about the government’s position on the consequential increase in workers’ salaries as a result of the new minimum wage of N30,000.

The labour leaders had at a meeting with the minister on Monday submitted their proposal on percentages on consequential increases in the new minimum wage.

Ngige, in his opening speech before the technical session that government had with labour on Tuesday, said government would not intimidate workers.

The minister said the Federal Government’s personnel cost had increased astronomically and that accommodating more wage bill like what labour was demanding could shut the economy down.

Ngige stated, “It is a matter of balancing a budget that is 76 per cent recurrent and 24 per cent capital. For me, it is nothing to cheer about. In the 76 per cent, government has captured N200bn for the consequential adjustment for the minimum wage and so on. These are all parts of personnel.
Don’t threaten govt with strike, Ngige tells labour

“I don’t want labour to misinform workers. They should not be misinformed. Workers should know that this is a consequential adjustment and not a holistic wage review. We must give the government the benefit of the doubt. I am for labour and I will not sit and watch them being cheated. I will also not sit and watch labour intimidate government. If you dangle a strike, it is intimidation and the International Labour Organisation Convention does not permit it. People should negotiate freely. If government threatens you in the course of negotiation, it is intimidation.

“I am your friend and friend of government. In fact, government feels I am not doing enough. That is why I am talking to you so that you can talk to your people. We cannot allow the government to shut down the economy because it wants to pay salaries and wages.

“The 2020 budget of N10.3tr has N3.8tr as personnel cost without overhead. If you add running cost and other incidental costs, the total recurrent budget as presented to the National Assembly has taken 76 per cent. Where do we get the money to build roads, airport, rails, health centres, schools etc.?”

Congress, Amechi Asugwuni, leading the labour team

Before the meeting, Ngige received the leaders of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, led by its president, Ibrahim Khaleel.

Strike will fail – Labour faction

Workers were on Tuesday divided on whether they should go on a strike over the new minimum wage.

A breakaway faction of the NLC, condemned the strike being planned to embark upon by the Trade Union Congress and the Nigeria Labour Congress.

The ULC president, Joe Ajaero, in a statement, said the union said critical sectors that would make the strike to be successful were left out of the decision.

The statement said, “We were part of the 16-man technical committee that gave birth to the Tripartite Committee on the Review of the National Minimum Wage and in which we participated vigorously in all the processes leading to its negotiation and the various struggles to deliver it for the benefit of Nigerian workers and peoples.

“The dynamics of the struggle dictate that we mobilise all our constituents both primary and secondary to make for a successful strike. A man that intentionally goes to war without its most critical weapons has prepared himself to fail.

“Nigerian workers cannot be forced to negotiate from a position of weakness as in this case. Why would we want to go into a nationwide strike without mobilising all the national stakeholders and civil society organizations, market women and students?

“Obviously, the proposed nationwide strike is designed to fail or at best watered down to achieve nothing but to bring few Nigerian workers on the street to dance and wave flags without shutting down the economy which is the effect a nationwide strike ought to have”.
