Celebrities / Nigeria’s Top Music Stars: What They Worth! by gister2: 6:39am On Jan 27, 2013
As far as today’s Nigerian music is concerned, its story is incomplete without these musicians. They are the movers and shakers of the industry, and their finger prints have shaped our music and made it acceptable to the world. They make bulk of their money from entertainment shows and events in the form of performance fees and corporate endorsements.

However, controversy have ensued on who is the greatest among them as regards fans, annual earnings and deals among others. Come with us as we take you into their world.

2face

2face whose real names are Innocent Ujah Idibia ranks among the very best of Nigerian music stars. At the time, he came to limelight after leaving the now defunct Plantashun Boyz, 2face was virtually an unknown name in the nation’s music scene. But his desire to go solo under Kennis Music, and floating his own record label, Hypertek Entertainment, marked a turning point in his career. And today, 2face is a crowd puller any day.

His “African Queen” song released in 2006, was used in the soundtrack for the film Phat Girlz, which was released internationally. He also released a promotion album in 2008, releasing the single, “Enter the Place”. Problems with album distribution in 2007, caused as shift of the release date of the album from 2008 to 2009. Tuface released two singles from the international version of his Unstoppable album and is the first Nigerian artist to have an appropriately priced international album.

*Tu Face, D’banj

The Unstoppable International Edition album, released in 2010, won two awards at the 2010 SoundCity Music Video Awards. He also won the Channel O Music Video Awards Best African Western award and the MTV Africa Music Awards for Best Male and Artist of the year. He is part of the Sony All African One8 Project alongside seven other musicians across Africa recording a single with R.Kelly and Prince Lee titled “Hands Across the World.”

Although he just joined Twitter, he already has over eighteen thousand followers. Few months back, the rumour mills had it that the African Queen crooner paid the sum of N10 million each to Pero and Sunbo – his other baby mamas – as settlement before going ahead to marry, Annie Macaulay. He has since opened a multimillion naira supermarket for Annie, plus other deals he’s secured for himself.

He’s speculated to worth over N550m with endorsement deals with Guinness, Airtel which earns him N20m and N22m respectively. He charges between N4 million and N5 million for shows. The artiste has invested heavily in real estate and stocks which is fetching him huge money.

D’banj

Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo is popularly known as D’banj. He has won several music awards including the awards for Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2007, Artist of the Year at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2009 and BET Awards of 2011 for Best International Act; Africa.

D’banj is currently best known internationally for his 2012 summer hit Oliver Twist, an uptempo dance fusion of Afro-Beats and electronic dance music that topped the African charts 2011 and was a top 10 hit in the UK singles chart in 2012 reaching no.2 on the UK R&B chart.

He owns businesses like a TV reality show called Koko Mansion, a hangout in Nigeria and US, Koko Lounge, Koko Foundation and Koko Mobile. D’banj also signed a deal with Glo worth N7 million. Power Fist and Virgin Colur soft drink also signed him into a multi-naira deals, and another multimillion deal with a popular jeweler.

He has a deal with Chris Aire as the face of his watches, and another with UAC foods. He collects between N5m to N7m for local gigs, between $80 000 and $150 000 for African shows, E40 000 and E60 000 for UK shows and $50 000 to $60 000 for American gigs. And like Don Jazzy, he also earned himself a record deal with Kanye West.

P-Square

They are identical twins who have performed and released several records under the Square Records. They remain the best R&B duo group in Nigeria and in 2011, they were signed under Konvict Music label owned by Akon.

Among the two, Peter is said to be a better singer while Paul dances better. Their songs always won awards because of their new dance moves and excellent quality. It’s best selling album, Game Over sold over 8 million copies worldwide in 2007. in 2009, they released another Danger with both winning awards like the BET and MTV Best Act.

Celebrities / Shocking Earnings Of Yoruba Movie Stars by gister2: 12:56pm On Jan 19, 2013
Quite a number of perks come with being a movie star in this part of the world. They include designer clothes, luxury cars and posh apartments. Apart from their penchant for such status symbols, today’s Nollywood actors and actresses are also seen as role models, especially to the young and impressionable who dream of becoming stars some day.

But, judging by the results of a recent investigation conducted by Saturday Beats, it appears all that glitters is not gold, after all.

Contrary to popular opinion, the life of the average Yoruba movie star is that of constant ‘suffering and smiling’.

In spite of the fabulous profiles and immense goodwill enjoyed by some of these celebrated screen gods and goddesses, the contents of their bank accounts are really nothing to be cheerful about.

Even the ‘alarming’ increase in the volume of home video films produced in Yoruba language ought to be sufficient to improve the bank balances of such celebrities. To make matters worse, many of them suffer from a financial disease known as ‘Withdrawal Symptom.’ In fact, it is no longer news that a good number are regular visitors to ATMs.

“As soon as money is paid into their bank accounts, you will see them rushing to the nearest ATM to withdraw almost all the cash,” an amused banker told Saturday Beats recently.

Certainly it is difficult to believe that no reasonably successful Yoruba actor or actress has ever been paid up to N500, 000 for a lead role in any movie. Half a million seems a fantastic sum by all indications. Instead, the maximum fee payable to the best actor or actress has remained between N150k and N250k. Even many of the ‘veterans’ receive as low as N10k to appear in a film feature.

While those that are constantly in demand or have won awards in the industry, such as the likes of Funke Akindele and Odunlade Adekola, earn a maximum of N250k per feature film, the rest are left with peanuts. Interestingly, an exception to this ‘golden rule’ is Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde. Gistvillages investigation shows that she earns between N250k and N400k.

Another ‘big earning’ actor is Adebayo Salami, aka Oga Bello. It is said that he hardly receives part payment from any producer. Usually on location, he would demand his fee of not more that N150,000 before going into action.

The same is said about Omotola who does not budge until she or her manager has confirmed that a certain amount of money has been deposited in her bank account.

However, the so-called big budget film productions have never exceeded the N3m mark despite the fact that a lot of money goes into paying the crew and cast. Money is also spent on production equipment, lights, costumes, makeups, transport, food, accommodation, generating plant sets, and other logistics/incidental expenses. That is also why most of the cast and crew are grateful when the filmmaker or marketer, who bankrolls the production, is able to hand them paltry sums of money.

“You can count on your fingers the number of individuals involved in the production who respectively got paid less than N50,000,” a production hand says.

Also included in the budget are the editing suite staff, copies of empty VCDs to be dubbed, posters and film jackets to be printed, marketing and distribution.

Now we know why most of the highly paid or underpaid actors/ actresses are writing their own movie scripts and directing or producing their own movie projects, as well as saturating the market with volumes of half-baked home videos every week.

Bukky Wright was the highest paid actress in the Yoruba language genre before Funke Akindele broke her N150,000 per featured film record with Jenifa.

Omilade Babatunde, aka Baba Suwe, used to be the highest paid aactor until the much younger Odunlade Adekola, aka Cause Trouble, began to earn up to N250k per feature film. The other notable figures? Well, they are trying hard to catch up with Omotola, Funke and Odunlade.

Celebrities / I Sold My Car To S Hoot Kukere Video – Iyanya by gister2: 6:26pm On Jan 13, 2013
Iyanya broke into the music scene in 2008 through Project Fame. However, his big break came in late 2012 with Kukere. He speaks on issues among which are his journey into music, his big break, relationship with women, arrest of his manager and others. Excerpt:

You said there are two sides of you, Iyanya and Desire. Can you explain more?

My name is Iyanya and it means Desire. It’s as simple as that. When I started music, I decided to use Desire instead of Iyanya.

Why?

Because I was so into R & B that I needed an English name to fit into my performances. So that was how it started for a couple of years in Calabar. When I got to Project Fame 4, they rejected that name, Desire and asked for a Nigerian name. So, that was how I used Iyanya. That was how I won Project Fame for that season singing R & B.

After winning Project Fame, I did R & B for some years but it didn’t work. So I decided to put aside the R & B Desire, and tried on the Kukere side of Iyanya. After Kukere, I discovered that people accepted me as Iyanya. So, my new album which will drop soonest is a mixture of Iyanya and couple of love songs.

So how can you describe the transition from Desire and Iyanya?

Desire was just an R & B guy with a great voice who took time to write music and talk about his feelings but just a few people appreciate Desire. Desire never made so much money. Desire always begged for shows, hustles for everything but Iyanya is global. Iyanya is accepted by all.

So what is about you that people don’t know?

People don’t know that I’m very slow to anger. I look like a pompous guy right? People don’t know that I play a lot and I don’t pretend. But I can’t just see a stranger and run to him. You have to come to me first because you can’t judge a book by its cover.

Why don’t they come to me first to say hi and see if I won’t respond. But people don’t know that, they just say I’m a snob. For example, some people may just come into this room and stare at me for like an hour without saying a word. Most times I’m the one that even says “hello, I see you are looking at me” and some of them would exclaim at the fact that I was the first to say ‘hi’ to them.

But that’s the way Nigerian fans are. They aren’t like those you meet abroad who would flock around you

But they are some who when they come to you, they come with swag and say “hey, how are you”, just because they want you to feel like nothing. I’m a human being too. I have my pride too. So if you want to talk to me, you talk with respect. Treat me the way you want me to treat you and I’ll treat you with respect too.

*Iyanya

You started from Calabar before moving to Lagos. What’s it like in Calabar?

Calabar is a small beautiful place. But musically, we are just trying to come up- it’s not like Lagos. It’s more of a civil servant place where everybody works and they are okay. It’s just a few of us who’ve decided to take it to the next level. So, it wasn’t easy for me. We have people that started with me back then. They all released albums in Calabar but I refused to be a local champion. That was so because I knew my talent wasn’t for Calabar only. I knew the world has to know me and I always pray to God for me to get a face and platform.

I know what it feels right now for all those artistes that have talents and good songs, they pay D.Js to play their songs but it’s not even working. But in Nigeria, all you need first is a name and a face, and Project Fame gave me that. Now, everybody just knew there’s one Iyanya guy somewhere but what does he have to offer? It’s different from when people just knew me with my talent because I didn’t have a name and face.

So how many years did you stay in Calabar before coming down to Lagos?

I was born there. And how old do you think I am?

Maybe around 30 years old.

I’m not that old. Let’s say I’ve been in Lagos for four years and I’m 26 years old.

Lagos isn’t an easy place for up-comers, especially for people like you who don’t know anyone here and just came in to hustle

People thought that I became a big boy after Project Fame- it’s a lie. Project fame actually started my hustle. It made me realize I have to work hard because when I left the Academy, it wasn’t with the like of T.Y, Mix. It was me and my mentors and people I’d always respected. So I’d to work hard, and see how long it took me to get here. Project Fame was 2008, this is 2013.

After Project Fame, fans expected a lot from you. Why the delay?

I was caught up in the fact that I won a reality show and people expected me to sing love songs, which I did but it didn’t take me anywhere.

So how did you feel all of those times?

I felt depressed. All those shows I now get, I used to beg them for shows back then. Today, I’m headlining the shows of same people I used to beg for shows from. So, it’s those shows that God did for me and I’d to work very hard to get here.

Kukere brought you out. How come?

I didn’t know Kukere would be this big.

Why?

Because it was the first song that began my transition. After R & B was the first pop. So you see, after Kukere, I moved to Your Waist then, to Flavour.

Is it true that it took you like three months to get Kukere done?

Yes, because I didn’t believe in it. My manager had to trick me that we had a show where they wanted to pay us N500 000. so when I got there, he told me to complete Kukere before we go for the show. After I completed the song, he told me there was no show. I was pissed.

*Iyanya on stage

Was it because you saw yourself coming from the R & B world?

I was threatened because I had five thousand followers who were Desire’s fans. They loved R & B and they kept telling me to steak to it. But I stuck to R & B and still couldn’t but myself good shoes. I begged organizers to start their shows even though I brought my own group and paid them, and they won’t even let me because they felt I’d bore the crowd.

Now that you are a star, what is it you could do that you can no longer do?

I’ve gone through a lot of things. Back then in my estate, I used to stroll out,to buy corn and peer because I didn’t have a driver, I drove myself. Today, all those have changed. It’s not as if I don’t eat corn but I now send someone to buy for me.

What did it take you to promote Kukere?

I thank God for some Djs who believed in me. And also some radio presenters- they made it happen.

There was this rumour that you sold your car to shoot the video

Yes that’s true.

So how many cars have you bought as replacement?

I have three cars now within a space of one year.

Did you really date Yvonne Nelson?

Yvonne is a darling. She’s a sweet person as well as Tonto. They are my buddies.

What about Yvonne’s tweets on Twitter?

Did you see the tweet addressed to me.

But it’s not a must to have your name there

But that’s the only way to prove she was talking about me.

What’s your relationship with The Tunes?

We are like brothers. We have a connecting synergy which makes us come out with great sounds. He’s the guy that God sent with the real sound for me.

Some pictures went viral on network that you are also dating a certain girl whom you took those pictures with

The lady in those pictures is the only female under my label. Very soon, they are going to say I’m dating Tina Tuner.

Was your Manager truly arrested?

I wouldn’t call that an arrest because we didn’t spend up to an hour at the police station. What happened was that Opah Williams called my manager to book me for Night Of A Thousand Laughs show in Benin. We charged him N1.7 million naira but he paid N1.5. He was yet to pay the balance when he called to say the money he paid was for two shows, another at Port-Harcourt instead of just one show. But we wanted to just do the shows like that out of respect for him, only to be stuck in the traffic on our way there.

We were in the traffic when we got a call that the show had ended when our agreement was that we would round up the show. So before we knew it, Opah showed up with police men who didn’t come straight from their station but were attached to some other important personality which is illegal.

They took us to the station at Mile 3 Police Division,in the Garden city, and asked if we had the refund. It was immediately that my manager issued a cheque to them, we went to the bank and we cashed it for them. We weren’t detained for anything because we gave them their money. In fact, we even apologized to Opah when we saw we couldn’t make the show.

Since you are now one of the hottest guys around, how do you cope with ladies?

I try to keep it on the low, maintain a good relationship with them.

You do have a girl friend, don’t you?

No, I don’t.

Why?

Because I don’t have time. Women like attention and they don’t like men without money. I’m young and this is the time I have to build tomorrow. I’ve tried few relationships but realized that my job comes in between us. So once I’m not there to attend to her, she can get aggressive and I’m a creative person- I don’t need aggression so that I can focus. I respect every lady that feels something for me but my job comes first.

It may be a bit old fashioned for their modern tastes – but this is the first glimpse inside the $11 million mansion Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have just bought.

The stunning Mediterranean-style mansion in Bel Air boasts wrought-iron staircases, chandeliers and ‘old world’ fittings – so perhaps it will come as no surprise that the high-profile parents-to-be have already made plans to gut the property.

The luxurious home – which was on the market for $10,750,000, according to Trulia– sits in a private gated community in the exclusive California suburb, and is a whopping 10,000 square feet.

Karrueche Tran spoke with Vibe about her relationship with Chris Brown and whether or not she’s willing to sit down with Rihanna…

If you could sit down with Chris and Rihanna, what would you want to get off your chest?

“For everybody, emotionally, that would just be way too much. I’m a very mature person so if the time ever did come where we would need to sit down and talk, I’d do it. I’m a mature person. I can work it out but that would be a lot. (Pause) Yeah, it would be a lot.”

How hard is it to work with Chris with everything that’s going on?

At the end of the day, he will always be a friend. We’ll always care about each other. We won’t allow that to interfere. Our business is business.

Do you think you’ve found the person you could spend the rest of your life with?

I do care about him and I do love him. Family is very important to me, and I’ve always put it in my mind to remember that. For me, I’d love to meet somebody and grow and build a foundation, but I don’t want to even think about marriage right now. I can’t even get a clothing line out. (laughs)

The Carnival routes were flooded by millions of spectators – the figure of visitors is estimated to have reached two million this year.

Chairman of the Carnival Commission, Mr. Gabriel Onah, described this year’s edition as classic, adding that the carnival has gone full swing and now has a brand identity that everyone wants to be associated with. The presence of participants from over five countries and high ranking personalities from around the country and beyond, he said, is a testimony to the heights the 32-day Calabar Festival has attained.

Nairaland / General / Husband Becomes Woman After 20 Years Of Marriage by gister2: 2:26pm On Dec 31, 2012
You’ve heard of a mid-life crisis and the crazy things men do when they are going through one. Some may go out and buy a sports car, some pick up new hobbies, but what if your husband decided he wanted to become a woman? That is exactly what happend to writer Christine Benvenuto, whose story was covered today by The Huffington Post in an excerpt of her recently released book, Sex Changes: A Memoir of Marriage, Gender, and Moving On.

After 20 years of marriage, Benvenuto’s husband, whom she calls Tracey in the memoir, shockingly decided that he wanted to become a woman. But the difference between Benvenuto’s hubby and most men who have midlife crisis is that Tracey claimed that it wasn’t a crisis, but a “gender sneeze.”

I can’t imagine what it must be like for a woman to have to deal with her husband going through a gender change. What’s shocking is how long Benvenuto was married to Tracey to be suddenly ambushed with this sudden life change on his part.

In the excerpt from her memoir, she recalls when she first started noticing he was changing. According to Benvenuto Tracey had started wearing women’s underwear and he never denied that they were his. After that, he wasn’t as discreet with the other pieces of women’s clothing he owned.

She recalled wanting to understand the father of three’s sudden change, but was in denial at the same time. The day Tracey finally spoke about it publicly she said: “He didn’t ask. He told. He did. He assumed a treasure trove, a trousseau, of feminine things, and he eloped with himself.”

The family continued living normally, but eventually it was something both she and their children couldn’t ignore. It resulted in Tracey losing interest in the family and soon Benvenuto realized she and her husband had nothing in common leading to divorce.

This must have been difficult for Benvenuto because she was married to Tracey for 20 years and even had a family with him. But overcoming the pain that stemmed from this and her journey to self discovery, helped Benvenuto move on in her amazing story

Politics / Big Fear In Enugu As Governor Sullivan Chime Stays Over 100 Days In Hospital by gister2: 4:07pm On Dec 27, 2012
Palpable fear and anxiety returned to Enugu State this yuletide over the continuous absence of Governor Sullivan Chime from office.

It was gathered that the Governor’s supporters are currently wrapped in fears over the threat that the State House of Assembly may impeach him in January next year if he fails to return to the country by or before December ending.

The State House of Assembly has been at the receiving end of hardcore criticism by members of the public for failing to take necessary action over the Governor’s long absence from office which entered its 100 days yesterday.

A close insider who craved anonymity said: “We have been silent over this matter since the past three months and we cannot continue like this in January next year.”

According to the source, even though the Governor wrote to the House officially, informing them of his decision to go on vacation for six weeks, he had spent 100 days so far without any official reason.

“The situation has become more worrisome because some government functionaries who claimed to have visited the Governor wherever he is have neither informed the House of whether he is sick nor incapacitated in one way or the other in that country even when speculations are rife that the governor might have passed out following an undisclosed ailment.

“The people of our various constituencies had been asking us a lot of questions about the governor’s whereabouts but none of us in the legislature can give any good answer or explanation because we know nothing about him,” he added.

Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr. Eugene Odoh was said to have repeatedly pleaded with his colleagues to exercise some patience over the concerns being raised by the public regarding Chime’s long absence from office, stressing that the Governor by staying away for three months had not acted against the constitution.

It would be recalled that Chime was last seen in Enugu State on September 9 after attending the South East Governors’ Meeting at the Governor’s Lodge but his aides disclosed that he flew out of the country immediately after attending a meeting in Abuja the following week.

The Governor was recently rumoured to have passed on in an Indian hospital but his media aide debunked the rumour, saying that the Governor must return before Christmas, an assertion which hasn’t come through yet.

The 2013 state budget presentation, which was left for him to handle in person, was later assigned to the Deputy Governor, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi who is acting on his behalf.

“When the Governor failed to return to present the budget himself as he had done since he took over from Chimaroke Nnamani in 2007, our fears were confirmed that all might not be well with him yet his officials continued to say that he is hale and hearty. I think something is fishy,” said one of law makers shortly after Onyebuchi presented the budget to the House last week.
