Culture / The History Of Port Harcourt by henshawjacobson(m): 7:02am On Jan 27, 2021
IN JUNE 1996, I had perhaps my first major test as a journalist from the Niger Delta. The Rivers State government under Colonel Dauda Komo had decided to revamp the state newspaper, and a new crop of journalists was being recruited to do a good job.

Kudo Eresia-Eke was serving as Commissioner for Information under that government. He hired the services of Taijo Wonukabe, a Lagos-based media relations firm, to get the best of journalists of Rivers stock together, and propel them to re-brand the paper.
I was in Lagos when l was invited to join the team. I had two weeks to put together a proposal as to what I would do if I were to become editor of the Sunday paper. One idea was to run a weekly magazine story, dwelling on a subject of popular interest.

In my capacity as editor of the paper, I was to write the first story and set the tone for the paper. The subject was Harcourt. Who was the founder of Port Harcourt? Why was this port named after Harcourt?
Dagogo Ezekiel-Hart, the editor in chief, was generous enough to sign out allowances for every reporter and editor to go in search of that elusive fellow after whom the young city was named. Go in search of the white man who first arrived the city known as Port Harcourt today.
At that time, in 1996, the internet was still far from our newsroom. We had to do the leg work, go around town, go around Nigeria, in search of Harcourt. One line editor was despatched by air to Lagos. Another was deployed to the national archives, Enugu, and all-around Port Harcourt, our reporters combed the ancient hives for the story of this man called Harcourt.
In the end, all that mass of information was dumped upon the desk of the editor, Tide On Sunday, and I was obliged to make sense of it all. Long before the photograph came to my attention, the following story was published in the maiden June 30, 1996, edition of The Tide On Sunday. It is served fresh in the pages of Coastline News Network, your local CNN…

HARCOURT WAS born. Harcourt lived. Harcourt died. That much is obvious. Harcourt was white. His Caucasian origins showed clearly in his aquiline nose, his thin lips and the pale pigmentation of his skin. To the local folk with whom he first came in contact in the early days of the colonial era, he spoke with a curious nasal accent like every white man in the neighbourhood.

11 Not -So Random Interesting Things You Should Know About Henshaw Jacobson

1. I am a premium spec, and I'm increasing in value every day.

God made me fearfully and wonderfully.

This revelation alone makes me a wonder.

Couple with my intelligence, work ethics and constant investment in my social capital and personal development, I'm not your regular spec. I'm not just going to become a brand, but an institution.

2. Nobody makes me feel loved like my mom.

She calls me mbakara mmi. That's perhaps the sweetest thing to hear besides bank alert.

Please don't ask for the meaning or try to call me that name cos you can't sound like her. Try bank alert by sending me money instead. Lols.

During the lockdown, she was so worried about me. When I told her I couldn't access food, she smuggled foodstuff into PH for me ( I'm still eating them).

3. I had a wonderful dad, but we lost him after high school.

My dad was this guy that will make dinner and serve every one all by himself ( I think he was the best cook).

4. The second time I cried as an adult was when I had a breakup.

I'm not an emotional person but I couldn't help. I cried like a baby whose mom promised chocolate but return home with a cane

5. I have always been among the top 3 students from the nursery, primary, secondary even college.

I can count the number of times I didn't take the first position.

6. I studied mass communication

7. I paid my tuition fee for my ND & HND.

I didn't have much to worry about growing up. But when dad died, it was a different story.

I came to Port Harcourt, got a job as a sales rep and I was working Mon-Fri and going to school Sat & Sun ( part-time).

8. I'm in a single relationship

I started the year with heartbreak. Then corona came. Terrible!

But it turns out to be a blessing.

I think love shouldn't hurt

Politics / What Is Nigeria's Democracy Without Social Media? by henshawjacobson(m): 6:32pm On Jun 17, 2018
What Is Nigeria's Democracy Without Social Media?

Social Media, The Only Thing That Reminds Me That We Are In A Democratic Government

Social media has given us a voice our Democracy is yet to give us.

Its where we are able to share our views in politics without fear.

Launch a protest without getting killed.

Connect with other Nigerians without asking to know their tribes, political parties or religion.

It's accessible to everyone!

Nobody tells you to keep quiet because you are a lady.

Nobody tells you that you belong to the kitchen and other room just because you a wife.

Nobody tells you that you are too young to contest.

With social media and digital technology, everybody has a dream and the right to chase it.

Imagine Linda Ikeji without the internet and digital infrastructures.

Imagine if Mark Angel waited for the government to give him platforms and there was no YouTube.

Imagine Nnamdi Kanu, didn't not have Facebook to promote Radio Biafra

Imagine Lasisi didn't not have Instagram

Imagine Bobrisky did not have Snapchat

Imagine Mayokun, The Next Rated Artist at The Headies 2018 did not have Twitter that connected him with Davido

Imagine a Nigeria without freedom of expression.

Can you?

Social media has democratized everything. It's not Aso Rock, but a place where everyone has equal access regardless of gender, age, tribe , financial status and every other things that limited us before the advent of digital infrastructure.

You could be nobody, and overnight become somebody.

Dear Nigerian Youths, it's about time we change our perspective to social media.

It's about time we think of better ways to use the most powerful tool in our hands.

What one need these days to make impact is a device with Internet connection. We have got it, let's use!

Let's use it to demand for good governance

Let's use it to hold our politicians accountable

Until the government redefines democracy, social media is our only Democracy.

THIS IS NIGERIA!

According to Steve Harris, It's not what you don't have that is limiting you, it's what you have but don't know how to use.

Happy Democracy Day Celebration!

Webmasters / How To Build A Brand And Influence On Social Media By Henshaw Jacobson by henshawjacobson(m): 6:23pm On Jun 17, 2018
If you missed my interview with Deon on Cool FM 95.9 PH on Saturday 16, 2018, this is for you especially if you are looking to use social media to grow your business.

Sharing my marketing knowledge and experience either through writing, speaking or training is one thing I enjoy doing the most these days.

They say knowledge is power, but I have learned through my experience as a digital marketer that knowledge can only be power when put into practice and shared with others. That was why the Rivers State LGA election couldn’t stop me from making it to the Cool FM station before 3pm for the social media marketing interview.

It was indeed a great time on radio with Deon. Amazing guy!

We had a very interesting conversation about social media marketing both on air and off air and I can’t share everything in this post as I must respect your psychology and play by the rule of this platform.

Below is the summary of the actionable insights I shared:

To build a strong brand and influence with lots of following on social media you don’t only need to have your brand registered on all the social media platforms that your audiences are active on, you have to:

1- Set up and optimize your social media pages properly

I have reviewed over 30 Instagram pages and more than 40 Facebook pages and I can tell you that 8 out of 10 social media pages are not properly optimized.

If you are like me, chances are you have tried connecting with somebody on social media just to search for the account forever like hen's teeth.

When your page is not properly optimized, you make it hard for search engine to collect your data, people struggle to find you, you suffer the most from algorithm changes and platforms like Instagram and Twitter might ignore you when suggesting accounts to your potential followers, and even when they do, they will likely suggest your account to people who may not be interesting in your brand.

But when you optimize your pages, you:

Strengthen your brand
Generate leads
Get more visibility online
Connect with your audience

2- Define your brand

Defining your brand and staying true to it helps you stand out from the social media noise.

You cannot market well without paying premium attention to branding.

I cannot count how many times I have struggled to remember a friend’s Instagram and Twitter handle. Now what if I wanted to give that friend a business? Well, I wee not go and kii myself, I will go to the nearest option.

Your brand identity is very important. My username is “Henshawjacobson” everywhere.

If you are a girl and your username is something like, “mhizsexyjane”, I wouldn’t wait for the angel to come and tell me that you are a wannabe slay mama.

So your name is Jane, your business name is Janny’s Cakes, meanwhile your social media username and activities depict a science student on a codeine diet yet you are blaming the devil and Buhari’s government for not making sales. I pray sense fall on you today.

3- Know your audience

Not knowing your target audience and not focusing all your social media marketing efforts on your target market is the easiest way to waste your time and marketing budget online. You only market when you are targeting.

4- Have a message, tell a story.

Here I’m talking about contents, I’m talking about storytelling. Your message is your story, your story is what is unique to your brand. Your competitors can copy your style but nobody can copy your story.

People will follow you because of your valuable contents, they will support you because of your story.

5- Make sure your target audience see your message

It’s not enough to create contents, you need a community to share your contents with.

You have to constantly grow your followers and take advantage of Facebook and Instagram ad to amplify your voice so more people can hear your story. If you produce more of visual contents, you should treat Youtube advert like fuel in Nigeria during Christmas.

6- Motivate your target audience to take actions

Everybody on social media needs to be motivated in one way or the other to take actions. Give people more reasons to follow you, support you and buy from you.

Use freebies, lead magnets, anything that will encourage them to take actions that add value to your brand.

Think like a typical Nigerian pastor when it’s offering time.

7- Measure your efforts and review your strategy

I know some expert will tell you to be consistent. I tell you to be consistent with your brand, be consistent with what is giving you results.

Take time to analyze your effort and treat any strategies and tactics that's not helping you to reach your goal like EBOLA.

8- Don’t try to do it all yourself, involve an expert.

Needless to remind you that Buhari has 156k followers on Instagram but he probably does not know his account password.

What am I saying? You don’t need to be a social media pro to build a strong brand on social media, just have a budget and hire an expert to work with you.
Outsourcing your social media management will allow you to focus on other aspect of your business.

Nairaland / General / Phc Entrepreneurship Summit For Teens (13-19) by henshawjacobson(m): 1:55pm On Jun 08, 2018
PHC ENTREPRENEURSHIP SUMMIT FOR TEENS (13-19)

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students in the city of Port Harcourt as Nigeria's number Entrepreneurship Life Coach James Abionaa comes to mentor 1000 lucky students whose parents, guardians, proprietors or proprietresses are wise enough to register them for this meeting.

Man can bend a fish when it is fresh but only God can bend a dry fish without breaking it.

We are catching them young. Entrepreneurship is the future of Nigeria. James Abiona is ready to coach these 1000 lucky students for one year.

The summit comes up on Thursday 21st of June at THE GRACE PLACE EVENTS ARENA between 9am to 3pm.

This event is not a hit-and-run event. After 5 hours of intense coaching on the 21st of June, James Abiona will be in their face daily on the social media for one year taking them through the fundamentals and the rudiments of entrepreneurship. This one year program will not affect their normal academic schedule but rather compliments all other classroom works.

The primary aim of this program is to prepare our children to becoming JOB CREATORS and not job seekers. Its usually too late when these ones gets to university where a lecturer who has never done one business before teaches them entrepreneurship theoretically. James Abiona wants to catch them young so that the medical students for example will go to the University Teaching Hospitals to work to LEARN and not to earn. He would have learnt how to write a project plan which will serve as his exit plan in order to go and work for some time and then pull out to start a private clinic which will metamorphosis into a hospital whereby he can also employ medical personnel. Hence, he is creating jobs. This is better than going to work for 35 years working through the ranks to becoming The Chief Medical Director.

Gone are the days when job security gives you financial security.

Don't be left behind in this entrepreneurship revolution. Register your child with N10,000 so that your child can be part of this destiny moulding exercise.

Remember, its only a child who has the spirit of entrepreneurship that can survive an unpredictable economy and a globalized world where artificial intelligence is taking jobs off people's desk hourly with no regard for any profession.

The only way to predict the future is to create one for yourself.
Registration closes once 1000 students has been registered.

To register, call 08034959205 now.

Respectful Submitted,

James Abiona.

11 Reasons You Must Use Digital Marketing To Grow Your Business Now

There’s one particular question that I get asked a lot.

“Why should I use/invest in online marketing to grow my business?”

In this article, i want to answer the question once and for all. I will break it down, highlight the main benefits of online marketing and offer my own advice to help you decide as well as succeed in marketing your businesses online.

There is no denying that the world of digital technology and social media is having a significant impact on how we do business, behave socially or act as consumers.
According to the Nigerian Communication Commission, NCC report published on May 2016, internet users in Nigeria stood at 92,409,962 in May. The report also revealed that out of the 92,409,962 internet users, 92,280,552 were on GSM networks while 124910 were on Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA).
Also, reports from Google show that 97% of consumers use the internet to research their product or services of interest before making buying decisions. Many customers will like to visit your website, check your social media account and read reviews; they want to get information and confirmation first before they commit to the buying process. These data show the increasing power and influence of the internet in the lives of people who could be your customers, and having a strong online presence should be an important component of your marketing strategy regardless of what business you are into or the size of your business. However, if all these will still not be enough to convince you to embrace digital marketing, these 11 reasons why you should invest in digital marketing to grow your business surely will.

But before we go into that let me define digital marketing and highlight some of its key forms for the sake of those who may not be familiar with the term.

So What Is Digital Marketing?

Digital marketing is simply the use of internet infrastructures to market products or services.
Some Of The Key Forms Of Digital Marketing
*Search Engine Optimization
*Social Media Marketing
*Pay Per Click Advertising
*Email Marketing
*Influencer Marketing
*Content Marketing
*Affiliate Marketing, etc.
Now Let’s Look At The 11 Reasons Why You Should Invest In Digital Marketing To Grow Your Business
1. DIGITAL MARKETING IS COST –EFFECTIVE
You can develop and maintain a strong online presence that can potentially replace costly television, radio, newspaper and magazine advertising with little cost. With digital marketing, what you need is a solid digital marketing strategy, a little budget and a team experienced marketers. There is no set cost for online marketing and it can be tailored to suit your budget.

2. DIGITAL MARKETING ENABLES GLOBAL REACH
You will agree with me that even CNN cannot reach everywhere, but the nature of digital marketing allows businesses to reach their target markets regardless of their age, location, nationality or any other factor that might have limited them before the arrival of digital infrastructures.

3. IT’S WHERE THE CUSTOMERS ARE
Social media is where people spend time these days, Facebook alone has over 17 million Nigerian users, your target audience are also sharing their experiences on Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, etc. But social media is not just a platform to stay connected with friends, families or acquaintances, it also presents a golden opportunity to build relationship with your customers and encourage them to be interested in your products or services. You have to always be in the eyes of your customers for them to consider your business.

4. DIGITAL MARKETING ENABLES COMMUNICATION WITH TARGET MARKETS
Digital marketing provides a direct communication pathway between business and customers, enabling you to build relationships with your customers. Your customers can comment on your posts, send you a direct message or email and get answers to their questions immediately.

5. ENABLES TARGET ADVERTISING
One of the reasons digital marketing is overpowering traditional marketing is the ability to target advert based on factors such as gender, age, location, interest and hobbies. If you own a beauty shop, you can decide to target your advertising on female aged 18-55 in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. This can be very difficult in traditional marketing like TV, radio, magazine and newspaper.

6. LEVELS THE PLAYING FIELD
Whether your company is a small start-up or an established business, you have equal chance to reach your target audience and motivate them to move to your direction. Digital marketing is not something for big brands like MTN and Zenith bank as some people think, anybody with a device and internet connection and be part of it.
7. TIME-EFFECTIVE
Digital marketing is fast and easy to start. You can set up your campaign at any time convenient for you. With easy, one-mouse-click you can get every part of your digital marketing fully automated and spend your time doing something else.

8. ENABLES REAL-TIME CUSTOMER SERVICE
Your customers can contact you through your social Media business pages and email for information regarding your business, they can place order online and pay conveniently.
9.DIGITAL MARKETING IS MEASURABLE
You can track and monitor your efforts with ease, view customers response rate and measure the success of your campaign in real-time. This enables you to know what is working and what is not working and effectively plan your next campaign.

10. HELPS BUILD TRUST AND CREDIBILITY
Establishing credibility in your industry is an absolute must if you want to build a successful brand. Through content marketing strategy, you can showcase your worth, demonstrate to the public why you are an authority in your field and build trust between your company and your customer.

11. YOUR COMPETITORS ARE DOING IT AGAINST YOU
There is competition in every business, if you do a competitive analysis for digital marketing, you will find out that your competitors are influencing your potential customers to their directions online. What do you think happens every time someone type in your industry keyword or search for product or service you can offer in Google and your business is not in the search results? Of course your competitors will show in the results and they will keep getting businesses while you complain of Buhari and bad economy. If you are going to compete, you have to be where the action is, online.

The bottom line is, the digital age is here, and it’s time you embrace the new way of marketing and communication. The Time Is Now!
