Politics / Senate Refuses To Confirm Man Who Critices Them During Screening As NCC Commissi by iwanchop(m): 6:11pm On Nov 17, 2016 |
Clears Durojaiye, Ararume, three others The Senate Thursday rejected the nomination of a former Speaker of Kwara State House of Assembly, Pastor Ezekiel Yissa Ezekiel as a board member of the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC). The upper chamber also rejected the nomination of Mr. Aliyu Saidu Abubakar as Non-Executive Commissioner of the NCC. The report of the Senator Gilbert Nnaji-led Committee on Communications said that only five out of the seven nominees submitted to the Senate by President Muhammadu Buhari for confirmation, were considered fit for the board appointment. Those cleared were Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye, as Chairman Governing Board, Mr. Sunday Dare, as Executive Commissioner (stakeholders’ management), Mr. Clement Omeiza Baiye, (Non-Executive Commissioner) Chief Okoi Obia (Non-Executive Commissioner) and Senator Ifeanyi Araume, (Non-Executive Commissioner). On the rejection of Abubakar, the committee recommended that “Mr. Abubakar’s response to the questions and issues raised by the Committee unveils him as a candidate who is not prepared for the demands of office such as required Commissioners of the NCC.” Senator Nnaji added that “Mr. Aliyu Saidu Abubakar could not produce any credible educational certificate for the Committee to verify at the screening. He obviously lacks the professional and educational disciplines provided in Section 7 (1)(a-h) of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003 which stipulates the qualification for the Commission’s Board.” On the rejection of Pastor Yissa the committee said, “Pastor Ezekiel Yissa’s background as a career Nursing Officer however, will not put him in good stead to be able to effectively cope with the dynamics of the communications sector if his nomination is confirmed.” Abubakar had argued during his screening that the cost of running the Senate was high and therefore should be scrapped. He noted that a situation where the senators were being paid huge sums as transport allowances among others amounted to economic loss to the country. The Bauchi State nominee also criticized the purchase expensive vehicles for the lawmakers. When the screening committee presented him (Abubakar) with several photographs where he was variously leading organized protests against the Senate particularly at the gate of the National Assembly, the unrepentant nominee thundered that he had no regret for his actions as he was still convinced that Senate was an avenue for wastage of scarce economic resources of the country. The committee had earlier pointed out what described grave irregularities in the personal records of the nominee. The committee noted that aside birth certificate, “there were only copies of court affidavit and police extract dated the same day, strangely after he had been nominated, claiming loss of his credentials.” It said that “Interestingly also, his highest academic qualification was a one-year “Diploma in Computer” from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi of-which the attached statement of result was dated 23rd September 2016, still after he had been nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari.” The report said, “When requested to throw more light on why he chose to present documents that were prepared shortly after his nomination and also why he believed that he was qualified to function as a National Commissioner in such a critical agency as NCC given the rigours, challenges and required expertise for efficiency of the commission, he revealed that he ‘did not bother to go for the credentials’ because according to him he “only went to school merely for knowledge having self-employed prior to the nomination”. Senator Nnaji told reporters after the consideration of the report “In my capacity as the Chairman I just defended the recommendations of the Committee that the Senate should confirm only five out of seven nominees for the governing board of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC. “In the course of our screening, we found out that two of the presidential nominees were not eligible and as such not fit to serve in the Board given our resolve to ensure that the communications regulatory agency is efficient and responsive relative to the prevailing challenges in the sector. “We assessed them based on certain parametres in line with the key performance indices put in place for the industry operators. Our decisions were basically guided by national interest. “Telecom network providers must be made to render services that offer Nigerian masses values for their monies. “So there is no way someone who does not possess the basic skills or expertise to key into our vision for a sustainable communications industry could have been cleared to serve in the board. “For instance, one was a career nurse and the other was a holder of one-year diploma in computer as highest qualification. “The question is: what inputs would they be making towards consolidating on the on-going improvements in the agency. “There are several openings in the economy where they could be useful but certainly not in communications sector.” Meanwhile, the Senate also confirmed some nominees as commissioners in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Those confirmed included Agbamuche-Mbu (Delta), Professor Okechukwu Ibeanu (Anambra), Ahmed Mu’azu (Gombe), Mohammed Kudu Haruna (Niger), Dr. Adekunle Ogunmola (Oyo) and Abubakar Nahuche (Zamfara). The Senate also confirmed the appointments of Justices Dauda Bage and Paul Galinje as Supreme Court justices. |

Politics / ICPC Indicts Okiro, Asks Him To Refund N133m by iwanchop(m): 4:32am On Aug 12, 2015 |
The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission has directed the Chairman, Police Service Commission, Mike Okiro, to remit N133m to the Federal Treasury through the ICPC recovery account at First City Monument Bank. This was the balance of the N350m he received from the Federal Government for staff training and physical monitoring of police personnel during the last general elections. The ICPC also ordered the workers of the commission who were paid two-way return tickets and airport taxi fares to location within the Federal Capital Territory and states close to Abuja during the monitoring exercise to refund to the treasury N11.75m. “Consequently, this Commission hereby directs as follows that the total balance of N133,413,845.99 from the N350,000,000 2015 election monitoring exercise domiciled within FCMB be remitted to the Federal Treasury through the ICPC Recovery Account No. 1012929790 at Zenith Bank Plc,” it directed. The anti-graft agency said this in its report of investigations into allegations of graft levelled against Okiro by a PSC worker, Solomon Kaase, who petitioned the ICPC in May, 2015 over alleged moves by Okiro to swindle the PSC to the tune of N275m. He alleged that the retired Inspector-General of Police claimed that the money would be used to train 900 PSC workers when the total number of the workers of the commission was 391. The ICPC confirmed that the PSC had only 391 workers contrary to 900 claimed by Okiro. It said, “Investigation findings revealed that the commission budgeted for training of 900 (members of) staff and to conduct training in Abuja, Lagos and Kano. “However, the entire staff force was not more that 391 and that is the figure actually trained in a programme held in Abuja only. The commission accepted the explanation that due process could not be adhered to strictly because of time constraint.” The report signed by the ICPC Chairman, Ekpo Nta, and dated August 6, 2015, said investigation revealed that the commission paid daily travelling allowances to all members of staff including those based in Abuja that participated in the training programme held within Abuja. “Air tickets and DTA were paid to management staff and others who monitored elections within Abuja and its environs; even at locations where airports do not exist such as Lokoja and Minna,” the report, which was addressed to the commission’s Permanent Secretary, stated. The ICPC observed that the PSC chairman collected money for two conferences that ran simultaneously in Dublin and Orlando, Florida, noting that he did expend the ticket fare for the Dublin trip. The agency, however, said Okiro had written to the Presidency to expend the ticket fare for Abuja-Orlando-Abuja on another trip coming up in October, 2015, stressing that it (ICPC) should be informed if the request was turned down. |

That Stella is hardworking does not give her the temerity to engage in illegal act. For those who say she's been haunted, did she or did she not have any fault in this saga? Where did she derive the power to approve money above N100m? Did she act in the best interest of Nigerians buying these cars? Politics / Suspend G7 Governors, clark Tells Tukur by iwanchop(m): 1:29pm On Nov 08, 2013 |
Elder statesman and former Minister of Information, Chief Edwin Clark, Thursday called on the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, to drag the seven governors who formed a splinter group from the mainstream PDP to the party’s disciplinary committee headed by Alhaji Umaru Dikko. He also described the visit of the All Progressive Congress (APC) including former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd); national leader of APC, Senator Bola Tinubu and others as a show of shame. Addressing a press conference in his residence, Clark charged Tukur to ensure discipline within the party. He said, “My national chairman, the PDP is the governing party in the country. You have a duty therefore, to prevent the distraction, the insolence and the tension being created by these governors, who have no regard for you and the National Working Committee [NWC]. You must do something immediately to save the image of this great party.” According to Clark, “Lamido, Amaechi and their counterparts from Sokoto (Aliyu Wamakko), Adamawa (Murtala Nyako), Kano (Rabiu Kwankwaso) and Niger (Babangida Aliyu) are not behaving like disciplined party members and should be made to toe the party line or get kicked out. The party is greater than any other party leader including yourself. “On the errant governors, the PDP must be firm, resolute, and discipline must be enforced. Nobody is above the law. Any errant member of the party must be brought to book. Everybody is ambitious, they want to be this or that, and there is no law and order. There is no respect for the party. Nobody controls them. Everyone of them makes speeches. There must be discipline.” On a specific note, he said, “Amaechi in particular, has no regard for the PDP. He has become supreme. He no longer has regard for his party. That’s indiscipline. Either he gets out of the party, or he toes the party line. That arrogance must be stopped and his open romance with the opposition must also stop. His financial contribution to the opposition must also stop. “Aliyu, Wamako, Kwankwaso and Nyako are trying to make this country ungovernable for President Goodluck Jonathan, in the name of ‘gang of seven’. I think if they are loyal party members and they are dissatisfied with the party’s administration, their consultation should be limited to the party hierarchy and, of course, there is a Party Reconciliation Committee headed by the Governor of Bayelsa State, Hon. Seriake Dickson. They are not faithful to the party and they have their secret agenda. “ It is amazing to see these seven governors parading themselves as saints when, in fact, most of them breached the party’s constitution to be installed as governors of their states by the former President in 2007. "Most of them were not elected in the primaries. Curiously, this gang of seven governors should focus their attention on the security crisis facing their states.” He explained that some of G7 governors do not even care for the welfare of the victims of Boko Haram in their state, stating that instead of staying in their states, they are moving from state to state causing confusion and tension. I think they should be ashamed of themselves for a mission unaccomplished. They should be suspended immediately and referred to the disciplinary committee. Nobody is greater than the party, Even the President is not.” I wish to condemn the activities of the 11 Governors of APC and their leaders in their open and offensive lobbying of the G7 to join them without decency and their action may create crisis leading to insecurity." On the visit of the APC leaders, to Port Harcourt, Clark described it as a show of shame, saying:, “According to the Police and the airport authority, Amaechi and his supporters invaded the Tarmac of the airport which is a “no go area” for none passengers and planes which were to land in Port Harcourt, have to be diverted to other Airports. He further said, having listened to the Rivers State governor, it was difficult to understand whether he was intoxicated with power or something was wrong with him when he made sarcastic, irresponsible and senseless remarks that he will consult the President before responding to APC’s request to join them and that day, the new stadium which will take 40,000 people will be filled to capacity. I will not be surprised, the tension and the pressure is now responsible for his cracking.” |
