Jesus, Man Of Contradiction: Was Jesus For Everyone, Including Non-jews? by therationa(m): 1:45pm On Feb 19, 2008
That Jesus was a man of contradiction would not have escaped the keen reader on the bible. He is supposed to be the bearer of the good news message, but such message is usually couched ambiguous language and parables. On the one hand he preaches the notion of loving your neighbour, on the other hand advocates violence. He even espoused the concept of eternal punishment for the first time in the Christian belief worldview.

He is held up as the paragon of family values, yet he is curt with his own family members, addressing his mother in abusive terms and advocating the abandonment of family ties as a pre-requisite for discipleship. Nowhere is his contradictory character more aptly illustrated than in his attitude towards non-Jews.

There are two occasions in the bible where Jesus is seemed to imply that his "messages was meant only for the lost tribe of the house of Israel" and implored his disciple "not to take the message into the Gentile communities". Yet, further on, he is seen to advise he followers to take the message to the world at large.

So what really does Jesus stand for? What are we to make of this bigotry to non-Jews attributed to him in the gospels?

See the following verses for the bigoted messages:

Matthew 10: 5-6
Matthew 15: 21-28

There are two occasions in the bible where Jesus is seemed to imply that his "messages was meant only for the lost tribe of the house of Israel"
"Once Beaten, Twice Shy". So what happens when you're Beaten Twice? As far as I'm concerned, if the above quotation can be remotely traced to Jesus, then He did not come for the rest of us grin  The closest a "Jesus" came to us in Naija was the "Jesus of Oyingbo" grin  cool

I have managed to trace the relevant verses. Here we go;

Matthew 10:5-6

5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: "Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.
6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.

Matthew 15:24
21Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession."

23Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us."

24He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel."

25The woman came and knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said.

26He replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs."

27"Yes, Lord," she said, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table."

28Then Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

Imhotep, you are asking of too much to assume that hypocrites like alphazee and therationalist would see those verses you quote.

Two of the most important criteria to ferreting out errors in the bible is to:
a. quote verses out of context
b. pretend not to see other verses that defeat the claims of contradictions

Let us now discuss mythology for the education of the likes of Horus ->

None of the scholarly definitions of "myth" imply that myths are necessarily false. In a scholarly context, the word "myth" may mean "sacred story", "traditional story", or "story about gods", but it does not mean "false story". Therefore, scholars may speak of "religious mythology" without meaning to insult religion. (For instance, a scholar may call Christian and Muslim scriptures "myths" without meaning to insult Christianity and Islam. The Christian apologist C. S. Lewis made a clear distinction between myth and falsehood when he referred to the life of Christ as a myth "which is also a fact".)

Where are you evidence?

Horus:

Did your Jesus have a bible.?
Yes, His disciples were his witnesses and they wrote down what they saw and heard.

Horus:

Did he even know how to read?
Jesus's knowledge came from His union with His Father. It referred to as Pure Knowledge (not needing any mediator) in philosophy/theology.

Horus:

Where are you evidence?
We believe His witnesses.

You assumed that Jesus was uneducated Youngman and could not have read or written anything?

Yea, but with God, nothing is impossible.  I know that education started one day and someone must have pioneered it.  So, who educated the first person that initiated it?  Don’t you think the person must have been an illiterate and could not have known how to read and write?

I don't think the intention here is to change Christianity.
Rather it's to plead with you first to be “open to reason” (James 3:17 RSV); once you become reasonable, we should then “reason together” (Isaiah 1:18) because “he who hates correction will die” (Proverbs 15:10) grin grin

Did you say “Open to reason”? And you can quote bible passages to justify what you don’t understand? Listen, you cannot reason logically until you thoroughly and deeply believe in what you ignorantly condemn.

So, getting submerged in a soup of negativism in what you have no knowledge, is a self-perpetuating behavior that leads to depression and more confusion.

I'm not sure I really understand this statement. Are you saying that to reason logically you must first totally accept what you don't understand? If you totally accept a theory then why is there reason to ask any question at all about the theory. Isn't it the logical questioning of details you don't understand that can lead to a better understanding and acceptance of a theory.?

Would love if you can clarify the statement above.

Two of the most important criteria to ferreting out errors in the bible is to:
a. quote verses out of context

My friend, please defend the contradiction in the Bible. If I were put in the same position, as concerning the Al Qur'an, I will defend it by a simple verse concerning abrogation: Al Rahman says in HisBook, that He abrogates a verse by another verse.

So as it comes to the law of retaliation; equality is prescribed, if you wish to retaliate because of pain, or take financial compensation instead or just the best way is to forgive, without the first two ways. Come to think of it, the state of california sued O. J. Simpson for the possibilty of double murder, wich he won by the famous late Attorney Johnnie Cochran's if it does not fit, you must acquit. But the Goldman family sued civilly and won monetary damages of close to 30 Million USD. Even the USA, a non Is'lamic society recognises the merit of Is'lamic justice.

But just to not tell us how two completely opposing sections of the Bible are from Jesus will definitely tell us that one section is wrong, but definitely, the two can not be wrong. And in fairness to Isa bin Mariam, His Lord will not allow him to make two conflicting statements, and will not allow him to forget or err.

I want you to explain it or at least attempt to do it.
Re: Jesus, Man Of Contradiction: Was Jesus For Everyone, Including Non-jews? by olabowale(m): 1:09pm On Feb 20, 2008
@Therationa: I will take it that any contradiction is not from Jesus, but from the Bible writers, alone. Jesus was a man of God, a messenger and a true prophet. A prophet of Is'lam, he was (as).
