Why Win 2000, Win Xp or Windows Vista When There's Win 98? by rufaai(m): 11:42pm On Oct 17, 2005
Hey,

I just thought of this, The nowadays windows are more poor than 98. Do you agree that Win 98 is better than all the Microsoft Operating Systems (Environment/Win)?

I believe this because WinXp and its equivalent always bring about damage by any slight problem, Kids and Cafe computers often get spoiled when ever WinXp is been used.

I have a younger brother and his sister that have one computer that they use... Everyday I have to fix the damage, they always get their computer spoiled. I decided to get them Win 98 which brought about a solution... Months passed without any damage in their computer...

Also, I know most of the internet cafes use Win 98 Operating system because its more reliable for laymen (People without knowledge over computer) I believe it doesn't damage easily.

my experience with computer started with win98se. i love toying with the registry then! i hate xp, though i have it dual booted with my linux. i rarely use the winxp, except with my sony ericsson p900 connectivity. my problem with winxp stopped when i stopped using it. i use fedora linux for all my stuffs, documentation, movie, video etc. i'm currently working on a linux distro that can be recommended for cyber cafes along with timer on linux box(got one already). Klax based on slackware is a distro i'm looking into. There's no way u can use winxp within two months without reinstallation. it's speed degrades with time and crashes when used too often. Win98se is light, like 190mb after installation. i can remember i used to install win98 on an old 689mb hard disk. i stll end up having 150mb free after installing office 97, acrobat 4,and adding some few mp3s! waz fun then! winxp memmory management is very poor. Give win98se a 10hdd space and 128mb and it will start flying! that's ma view.

Win '98? Please tell me you're joking. It's like saying why do we have colored TVs when the black and white ones worked so well. If there's one thing we can be sure of in technology it is change. Win 98 served its purpose in 97, 98 but as soon as 2000 came out it blew it out of the water. Now win 2003 has blown 2000 out of the water as well and the saga continues.
Re: Why Win 2000, Win Xp or Windows Vista When There's Win 98? by rufaai(m): 12:27am On Oct 29, 2005
I dont think Win 98 should be for 97 and 98... Besides dont compere it with TV, this is to do with what we get out of it...

When the colored TV doesnt bring about the picture perfect, why not take the Black & White?

If you still have a Pentium II or some less hard disk PC, then the best operating software for you is win 98. I have a pc with win 98 and also have a pentium 4 with win xp running on it. So both of them are very handy. I allow my family to play with win 98 while I keep the xp jealously to myself. At least they wont say I dont allow them use the pc. When they are conversant very well with pc usage, then they can migrate to the xp while I keep jealously again to my Laptop. So enough of the argument, they are both very useful.
Re: Why Win 2000, Win Xp or Windows Vista When There's Win 98? by rufaai(m): 11:38pm On Nov 06, 2005
Hey, Remember this... All that win 98 requires is upgrade.

Do you know that there are still softwares you may want to use that would require win 98 or bellow... and Xp will reject them... I've came accross such a thing...

I use XP 2005... What do you think?

Besides, What I am asking is which window best suites the kids... 98, 2000 or XP... I believe 98 can suffer more than Xp
Re: Why Win 2000, Win Xp or Windows Vista When There's Win 98? by twinstaiye(m): 12:33pm On Nov 07, 2005
Yeah win 98 suited the kids like glove. It is not complicated to operate and of course if it has problem, you can easily fix them up.

Guy, guys, guy!!!!!! nahwaaaaa o! why are Nigerian's so afraid of technology? you guys need to understand that i will not hurt you. How can you say that a black and white TV is better than a colored TV? grin
Windows xp is the best is the best of the windows series and windows 98 has nothing on it.

Hi,+
Well I think it depends on what you are doing with your PC if it only internet or word processing or such minor things then you can still hold on to Windows 98, But if you do more like CAD or let say editing Films or Homestudio I bet you surely need more that Windows 98
Re: Why Win 2000, Win Xp or Windows Vista When There's Win 98? by goodguy(m): 10:37pm On Dec 10, 2005
Windows 98 is the most rugged of all Operating systems. If there's any fault with your computer, probably it keeps hanging everytime, use a windows 98 CD or startup disk to format the harddisk. Then reload ur Win200 or XP. You'll definitely see the results.

The only problem with Win 98 (which really isn't a problem) is the fact that it doesn't have as much features as there are in Win 2000 and XP. The only special features of XP are the colourful environs and the extra petty features. Any other thing is nonsense. Win XP is the most vulnerable to computer infections such as Virus attack, Spyware and Adware attack. Plus, it's files get corrupt so fast and easily. Most computer engineers prefer Win 98.
Re: Why Win 2000, Win Xp or Windows Vista When There's Win 98? by leighcon(m): 9:10pm On Dec 17, 2005
Everybody is correct here but our windows 98 fans are not wiser than microsoft now. In actual fact however XP is best enjoyed if your hardware is robust. And I beg keep up with updates and you'll discover that the XP side of life is the real thing.
But win98 in 2005 na wa o. It is better to find a solution to your colour T.V than reverting to Black and white cos u'll never win a gift in a T.V request Programme, what if they ask you to state the colour of the dress the person on your screen is putting on. ah ah u see why now.

people say windows 98 is far better than XP, is this true?
Re: Why Win 2000, Win Xp or Windows Vista When There's Win 98? by Farriel(m): 4:45pm On Jan 05, 2006
Hmm, your question is quite difficult to understand, literally. Comparing Win 98 to Win XP is such a flawed comparison to make because they are just not on par with each other.

You say people 'say' 98 is 'far' better than XP, just on what basis is this line of comparison made and how are the results obtained? I should not even try to find out the benchmark for this comparison, or should I?

To me, the best Windows OS out there is the Windows 2000 Professional.

Windows XP goes a long way in winning peoples' hearts, but that's due to its aesthetic interface and user-friendliness. But all in all, XP is way out of the class of Windows 98, my friend.

I'm my opinion, the above statement proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are definitely not a computer engineer. Anyway, to counter your arguement, the following are just a few of the key features implemented in XP:

- The ability to define Restore points to allow you to roll back hardware and software changes to a previous point in time.
- Internet Connection Firewall that allows you to restrict access to your machine.
- Compatibility Mode which allows you to execute programs with different screen resolutions or with different environment settings such as Windows 95, 98, Me or NT4-SP5.
- Universal Plug and Play support along with wider support for additional hardware
- Ability to run DLLs in parallel (end of DLL Hell). This technology protects existing applications and Windows itself from being disrupted by installations that modified system DLLs.
- Increased stability over Windows 98/Me and slightly improved stability over Windows 2000.
- Remote Assistance: the ability to invite somebody to view or control your desktop in much the same way as Timbuktu or pcAnywhere.
- Fast user switching. By taking advantage of the Terminal Services technology built into Windows XP one user can login without actually logging out the previous user.
- Internet Explorer 6.x.
- Windows Media Player 8 and Windows Movie Maker provide Digital Audio and Digital Video support respectively.
- Built-in CD-R/CD-RW support.
- Ability to handle updates automatically.
- DirectX 8.x support.

This list goes on but I think I've made my point.

I just discovered an unfinished work in win xp, File and print sharing is restricted to only 10 SIMULTENOUS users. Guys I had to downgrade a file server to windows98 in order to beat this limitation. All the same Xp is da bomb for now. I feel for you my friends that have decided to stick to the greek days windows, everybody cannot be adapting to changes at the same spate

I am not sure but I think Window 98 operating system can only see maximum of 4GB.  I am not sure on this but something like that, besides the problem with people and computer speed is nothing to do with the OS.  Every MS OS has recommended specification; I think people should pay attention to that.

Window 9x are not very stable because the chip architecture was design to support 16bits application.  As bandwidth and technology became affordable, it was time MS abandon the entire 9x project and move to a newer architecture that supports 32bits application.

If you have Ferrari, where would you like to take it for a spin?  Single road? Or double lane?  Hence (16bits and 32bits).  Do you know that MS has stopped all support on all 9x products?.  No service pack no newer updates etc.

Remember that the kernel that ran MS 9x, which is Dos 6.0 is the same Dos upgraded to 9.0 that runs all Window 200x.  All the graphics and powerful NTFS (New Technology Filling System), and Dos command particularly network command we see in window 200x are the new compliment for migrating, courtesy of MS.

Anyone can hardly say that there is any certification offered by MS to get you jobs in Window 9x, all the certs are for Window 200x.  Why? Because companies do not really use window 9x as their workstations.

Besides Window 9x are not really good for networking in term of security, access violation and doesn't run 32bits application.  MS is even thinking of a new generation of workstation OS that will run 64bits application now that bandwidth and network topology is getting better and better.

Some threads I was arguing with someone, and he said Java is too bulky and slow.  Imagine if we can run all our application on 64bits chip architecture, wow that would be really amazing

I really dont know why peeps still wanna use windows 98 anyways. I'm a system's administrator for a large organisation and i've experienced NT, 95, 98, 2000 / ME and finally XP.

XP has been the easiest to live with on a daily bases. As long as your computer is fully patched up and the antivirus is upto date plus a decent firewall XP will serve you well.

I really cant wait to get my hands on vista, hopefully next week and i'll see what Mr Gates has got planned for the future.
Re: Why Win 2000, Win Xp or Windows Vista When There's Win 98? by Larufa(m): 1:36pm On Feb 25, 2006
Windows98 is the best OS from MS ever.
It hardly crashes and requires least Hard Disk space to installed.
Easy to and smooth Installations.

As for Win Xp, it crashes with the slightest of problem, just power outage 2x leads to it crashing.

@sbucareer, win98 can see more then 4GB of Hard Disk, this I am very sure.

@kenniy, what is the diff between FAT32 and NTFS, not much, so stop fooling yourself.
I am an experinced System Manager and I know what I am saying. If u ever worked in a large enterprise which diff computer user attitude u would not have said that cafe managers are outdated.

I thought this argument on win 98 and windows xp shld have been over by now. With a self acclaimed authority I declare all those who supported windows XP as being better than win98 as the winners. make we close case I beg.
If u like go and make windows 98 ur os for a critical application, I won't console you if u start crying

http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htm

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/russel_october01.mspx with attention on:
When to Use FAT or FAT32

If you're running more than one operating system on a single computer (see my earlier column Multibooting Made Easy), you will definitely need to format some of your volumes as FAT. Any programs or data that need to be accessed by more than one operating system on that computer should be stored on a FAT16 or possibly FAT32 volume. But keep in mind that you have no security for data on a FAT16 or FAT32 volume—any one with access to the computer can read, change, or even delete any file that is stored on a FAT16 or FAT32 partition. In many cases, this is even possible over a network. So do not store sensitive files on drives or partitions formatted with FAT file systems.

oh my God, am so shy embarassed

some funny stuff going on here lol.
how can anyone compare win98 (even win98se) to winXP ??
win2000 is far better than win98 much more winxp. "microsoft" knows it too.

to those who say they don't see much difference between ntfs and fat32, read up.
ntfs is just next to extension 2.
and just so u know, the worst windows ever was WinMe.

men guys make we dey talk true. It is only a layman that prefares 98 to xp
why not compare 2000 t0 xp at least we can then bring out some arguments from there but never talk about this 98 and xp stuff them no be mate at all. Just take a look at the graphics, features and everything xp is better it takes about 5-6 years for microsoft 2 produce xp after win 98. the researches and everything can not be useless
maybe you have a very old computer like a pentium 1 or 2 then u can run on 98 but if u have p3 or p4 install your windows xp and play on.

Well 98 is rugged i'll giv it that and XP crashes too often e.g fluctuation in power etc. So for me i have both on my system but i'll let u in on a little secret ( i use XP most often havent run 98 for like 6 months!!!)

Anyway if XP crashes i still have 98, so my files arent lost!!

Well cant wait for Vista heard its comin out is Sept right??
