AMID the stand-off between President Olusegun Obasanjo and Vice-president Atiku Abubakar over allegations of corruption, one of the vice president’s aides was shot dead yesterday by the police. Atiku Abubakar Organisation gave the name of the victim as Victor Okonkwo, one of the State Security Service (SSS) operatives attached to the vice president. The police confirmed the incident, saying the vice president’s aide was killed because he brought out a pistol provocatively during an encounter with the police at a checkpoint along Abuja-Keffi road more here http://www.vanguardngr.com/articles/2002/headline/f101102006.htmlWho do we blame?

@Cyprian Yes, you've been watchin too much Nigeria films!
It's rightly pronounced "Odenshi". Lol. I've heard so many stories about it and I really don't know if it does exist. Maybe. Maybe not. But that's not the issue. The issue here is the nuissance called the Nigerian Police. I dare say situations like this (ie stray bullets) happens everyday in different parts of Nigeria which we dnt get to hear about.
please lets not bring the Obj Vs Atiku war into this matter but acknowledge how much threat these so called police people pose to innocent individuals on a daily basis. Isn't it ironic that we now have to protect ourselves from those supposedly in charge of protecting lives and property. Ironic and sad.

Hey! We have to be careful here who to blame and we ought to have adequate knowledge of the incidence before blaming anyone, just because either party might be at fault. If the police's claim was right, they are not to blame because he might just kill one or two of them instead, but if not, the police have the blame

OBJ has a lot of power, he is equally very crude and raw. The plane crash involving several generals and now this murder are all evidences of OBJ's misrule. I know the Nigerian police under OBJ to be irresponsible. They are capable of anything but to kill a presidential security detail at a time like this points to the current face off between the two men at the helm of affairs in this country. This is purely what it looks like. It's that simple to fathom. They are testing the ground and reaction. Atiku must be careful these days. Media hype on this issue will be curtailed by the presidency and that will bring them to conclusion that people want Atiku dead. Atiku, beware though you are corrupt as your boss beware I say of the "ides of October."

in the nigerian law - any action taken under provocation, is arguably justifyable. - i hope say i talk am wellbut the idea is "in this country, before 2k7, the mighty shall swallow theselves up, and the meek/mild will be left to rule + be b ruled"

And they killed the man just like that? what the hell is going on? Well, why won't it be so when you have a bunch of hungry beggars and ex-robbers as police men. They barely know what life is and can take any if given a few change. Well understood the section of the law that states"attack in self defence". Honestly speaking, I don't believe the SSS threatened with a pistol. I mean, why would he do that? The cops must have wanted to 'get rid' of him as 'ordered'. There's more to the story! Stupid police and useless government!!!

I wonder why police were so afraid of just one person in their midst.
Aint they suppose to consider what they do with their guns everytime they draw it out; either if u're killing or saving a life with it. U can't just be killing everytime. abaah!

It's hard to believe the police in this country. This is not the man's 1st encounter with the police at checkpoints so why should I believe he'd do something that stupid? Antways, this is just the way I reason,

Most of the security agencies don't regard the police orders because of their bad repute which might have resulted in killing the SSS guy. I guess. But then it is not justifiable for them to kill him.

I would like to sympathize with the family of the deceased but i have to say it probably serves all of them right. I'm sure the SSS agent has bullied enough people to last a lifetime. While his death is condemnable, all our security agencies have to work with caution. they shouldn't pull a gun at the slightest provocation, if they continue this way, there might be no one left to bully and accidentally gun down.

Hey Hey Hey!!! I am not a fan of OBJ but I suggest we should all look at the facts of this story before analysing as if we just finished watching a nigerian home video, ok! This things happen everywhere. The guy that was mistakenly shot in a train station in the UK recently. Diallo was shot in the US when the police thought he was pulling out a pistol from his pocket, but fired at him only to discover that he was trying to bring out his ID. Back to the naija case
1. The guy was an SSS operative (an ununiformed state security service) 2. He was driving a car without obvious plate number 3. He was not on official duty 4. What was he doing with his service pistol travelling to write an exam in another state? 5. There was an obvious encounter between him and the police men 6. A gun is no respecter of anybody, if a law enforcement officer feels threatened by arms in the course of doing his job, he has to protect himself otherwise he will find himself in my kingdom.
OBJ vs ATIKU or not, let's be objective. aiight?

I will not agree with you Seun. Remember there has been allegations from both camps on threat to Lives. So not political advantage, but to drive a point I would say.
On the part of Police, well, The late aide been with the VeePee for 5 years so the report said. The SSS will not leave him at his post for that long if he were not damn good.

@momoney so if i'm getting my pistol out of my pocket with the intention to shot you, so you mean you'll just shot me in the leg (or is that not the kind of stuff you mean by defensive?); consider yourself dead b'because i'll put the round straight through your head. A defensive shot is not used in an eye for an eye situaion. I'm telling you this from my profession and by the way, I have nothing to do with Nigerian forces.

Can we trust the police?
If the police are telling the truth, then there might be some justification with/in their action otherwise, My problem with this incident is that the timing aint just right.
I don't like it when people die like this whether you are Atiku's aide or an unknown person. I just pray that Justice reigns supreme one day in Nigeria so we can trust our police.

I stand to disagree that the aide who is a security operative would seriously pull a pistol on police officers who are bound to shoot even without provocation. It is a conspiracy .It is unfortunate that the downfall of evil men always takes the lives of people who are in service . That man's family has lost him to a war he may or may not be involved in directly.

layifioren, so much talk about killing someone point blank .what do you do?are you an assasin?Oh please just don't speak on what I am not sure you know much about. There are a lot of factors involved and . It is not everyday that you see an sss operative who is alone getting into gun confrontations with a group of untrained armed and illiterate armed police men. You will see that after today we will hardly hear about the perpetrators of this murder. This is murder and nothing else.

It's a pity the guy is dead! This kind of situation occur regularly between different security arms in Nigeria: The NPF vs the Navy/air force/army/lucifer . When you are on somebody else's turf, you play by the rules. You don't pull a gun on somebody, especially the untrained Nigerian policeman, even if he's your son! IT'S SHEER ARROGANCE! Because you work in the Presidency does not give you the audacity to not to play by the rules! The truth of the matter is that the SSS operatives are no different from the police. They are a bunch of arrogant people. I have friends in the service and know that they pull out their pistols at the slightest feeling of provocation. See what it has cost this one - death. The same thing happen with students of the Nigeria Defence Academy. They harass policemen on duty at the slightest provocation, before you know it they have seized the guy's rifle and dismantled it. It's sheer madness. I would approach my son with care if i found him with a gun talk less of an arm policeman on lawful duty! Wake up guys!

some people just open their mouth, if you are a police officer and you stop a car and order the driver to get out of the car, and he the driver they to put his hand in his pocket, your 1st response as a police officer in any country regardless will be to shot, disarm the driver, this is just unfortunate it happen to Atiku aid, we see this in every country. he as an SS guy should have comply and obey the police officers in this case.
