Does 'Home Advantage' Exist In Football?
« on: October 02, 2006, 01:54 AM »

Is There Football Home Advantage?

One school of thought says: The game is between two teams of 11 players each so playing at home will never influence the result.

Some will say: Referees always favour home team

Other Analysts says: Visiting team always come to Defend which makes the home team ruthless in attack.

Nairalanders, what is your take on this?

Can playing at home be an advantage to the team?

It's a compex issue, the cheering of the fans is a great moral booster but some teams are so useless on the day that it's of no use, there are so many factors but overall it does exist, then why did i post no (stupid me) ------peace-------- Cool

yes it does but not always

considering the fact that some away teams are allocated only 6000 tickets out of a possible 40,000* or so the home teams are usually meant to be at a psychological advantage with their fans cheering them on or booing the visiting team. and you don't want someone beaten you in your own "Fortress" or even lifting the Cup in your own stadium do you?

Of course, it CAN be an advantage but when you are playing against a far better team, you still have a lesser chance of winning the game, home advantage or not.
A good case in point might be the Nigeria V Brazil gamein Abuja sometime back.

It can only help in lifting the teams spirit, but not making them win the game. The wining depends on the team themselves.

With the fans cheering their every-move, the players fells kind of motivated, and owing to the fact that their fans are very expectant, they wouldn't want to dissapoint the fans right under their nose. They will have to put in their best to yeild a favourable result-just to satisfy their fans.

So, home advantages exist, but it works for some not all. U don't expect a team like Brazil to meet say-Benin-Republic in their home and start mentioning home advantage. No miracle will work there o!

Yes it does. Its quite depressing to have your every touch booed by 50,000 people especially if you make a mistake.

Of course, home advantage does exist but it's like a double-edged sword because the same fans that cheer a team could also bring immense pressure upon the team.Ask the teams that play at the san siro, bernabeu etc.

i voted yes, but am not so certain, i think it's kind of 60% in favor of home advantage. It does help a lot when u have over 60,000 fans screaming and backing a team up.

We talking on the basis that it's a 'corruption free' game huh?
I don't believe there's anything like home advantage in a f.ball game. Whether the away team has a few thousand fans right there in the stadium to cheer them and the home team has more, the point is they all have fans they don't want to dissappoint even away.
I mean, why would a team loose when they can beat their opponent??? Every team wants to win whether home or away. I don't believe in "home advantage".

i think in the game of soccer home advantage really matters, because just take a look at the toughest clubs and countries in the world, it is always difficulf to deafeat them at home.

Well i'D say the definition of "home advantage is a little bit complex". You could thrive on the cheer from the crowd to boost ur morale, i'D say thats an advantage,
But u see in Africa, home advantage means a whole lot different,
Like u don't expect to be beat at home, and the visiting team tend to expect some violence from the crowd if they do. Referees are only to eager to make sure home team wins to avoid a busted head.  Shocked
I once looked at our league table (Globacom premier league). u'll see something like Played (20) Won (10) Lost (10) All the games won were home, all lost were away.

Now u get what i mean.?  Grin

Playing at Home is an Advantage considering the fact that they say the home suporters are the number Twelve man on the pitch,
Playing at home rises the moral of the players as well as

Its physcological
Eg. Especially for players like Eto'o who gets called a monkey playing in spain
At least when your @ home the crowd is on your side
I think this really matters.

The away team will get verbally molested on every pitch around the world.
The degree to which the insults are thrown due vary.
Ive never heard of fans who were overly polite to the visiting team.

The fellow members before have already listed some like;
Quote
"Iif Brazil played Nigeria at Abuja"

some of my annomalies would be, for instance in a scenario where a team is been punished for the poor behaviour of their fans and they have to play one or two games with none of their fans (that's happened before, can't remember where i think the seria A)
Another annomaly would be if instead of motivation from the fans the players start to boo one or two players because of unsatisfactory perfomances their are so many combinations and possibilities but i think overall any coach on earth wether it be the seria A or the Premier league or an international match, would prefer to play at home rather than away

I think home advantage really exists in the game of soccer co's if you are a real soccer fan, you will notice that 95% home matches are won by the home team.
