the last time i checked to start with an ISBN number u need at least 40k but the best way and cheapest form that every one is doing is the ebook format just get a site posted on the internat ie. www.yourname.com and promote offline i mean via the newspaper company and papers that are affiliated to your niche area also i would advise you to get how to books on promoting your ebook that is getting the best traffic for your site but locally and outside , a good sales letter for your web site too cheers as you start your own book

For starters, the question goes like this, which is more economically profitable, the online version or the hard copy publishing. Does anybody know ?

It's much easier to get started with online versions. I currently sell an ebook on affiliate marketing at http://www.averagejoeaffiliate.comI set it up in less than 12 days and i sell a copy for $29 and i'm glad to tell you that "oyinbos" are my biggest customers. I sold over 30 copies in the first week of launch. All the best.

Only 20% of books sold worldwide were bought online. 80% of books were bought offline.
My book published traditionally offline is selling more than the ones published online.
It is difficult for most Nigerians to purchase books and other products and services online.
The bestselling Nigerian books online have been sold on Amazon. And they are fiction.
I sell books online and offline. And offline I take books to the target market directly.
Lulu.com is still the best option so far, because they provide all the tools for you to self-publish gratis. But they cannot help you to edit your book.
If you are sure of the quality of your book and your knowledge of the English language is world class, then you can publish it yourself online or offline.
If you need a good editor, I advise you go to the senior lecturers in English in our universities.
Please note that being a good story teller does not mean you are a good writer.
I advise those who are learning to attend writers workshops. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Chris Abani, Sefi Atta, Helon Habila, Diana Evans, Michael Chima and others attended writers workshops to learn how to write.
Writing is very technical and message development matters in writing.

I think the best thing to do if you dont have so much cash for offline publishing is to opt for online and again if you're living outside Nigeria. In most cases, its very very difficult for those in Nigeria to order books online as everybody feels the credit card is stolen.
In the meantime, i'll advise you try out lulu.com as they offer an attractive package for young and old writers alike.

I think it would be the best idea to publish it as an ebook. However first find if there is a demand for your subject
Go to office.org and download the suite of programs. It's open source so you don't need to pay. The word processing option works the same as MSWord with the additional option of being able to publish the document to an ebook within the application. Develop a webpage and add on a PayPal button/or direct them to your phone number and then think up some way they can pay you locally for it. Then start to promote it online
It's cheaper to do it this way then finding a printer etc
