« on: April 01, 2006, 02:57 PM »

I am scared to take it to the Computer Village, they might tamper with something else in the lappy or probably remove something from it and put an old one or it could get stolen from me at the Village, i learnt they steal a lot in the Village

I don't support going down this route myself. Did you install any new hardware or software? Can you go into your laptop's Bios and check that the speaker are not muted in the Bios? I don't know how to get into the Bios in toshiba but in IBM you have to hold down the F1 button while starting the notebook up.

If all that is okay, then if you have your restoration CD, back up your stuff and restore the laptop to factory settings( Note, this will delete and format your hard disk so you need to back up all your stuff.) This should restore your speakers, if not, its a hardware fault.

Before you format the system, do a System Restore (thats, if you're using XP). Restore to the point (date) when the problem occurred. If its a software problem, that will(?) fix it. For hardware, you will have to go a different route. To perform System Restore:

click Start--->(all)Program--->Accessories-->System Tools--->System Restore then follow the screen.

If you still have the problem, lets know and don't forget to post your OS type.

That happened to me not too long ago. I have an HP Z something or other & it's 3 and half years old. (kind of old for a laptop). Anyhow, not too long ago my speakers weren't working. I called HP Tech Support and they wouldn't help me b/c my warranty or whatever was up. But I remembered the guy saying "It might be a hardware problem" b/c of my laptop's age. But also it might be a "software problem gone arie". He said that if I had recently installed a program it might be messing w/ my speakers. Oh my particular problem was that I could not control my speakers or volume using only my keyboard and the Fn key as I had previously. So anyhow, I uninstalled the last (most recent) program, let my laptop rest and then later everything was fine again.

Hope this helps.

No. System Restore is not the same as backup but, they are cousins.

If you choose to restore your system, you don't need to back up at this time you can always do that later. By doing System Restore, you will be goin back in time but, if you've decided to format (which i strongly disapprove until you find out that System Restore couldn't fix the problem). Reason: If you format and find out that the problem is hardware based, you would've wasted your time and you gon have to reinstall all the software you have previously. And i'm sure you don't have some of those Cd's/DVD anymore.

I don't like typing so, i will give you the links.
System Restore. Explore more.

This will explain how to backup your data or you can explore more here.

If you need more help, don't hesitate to ask. We all wan see you happy.

If you have a CDR/W drive, insert a blank CD or DVD, open your favourite CD burner software, select your documents and other files, burn them to CD.

Now if anything happens to your laptop nad you need to re-install, you have your documents on a CD or DVD.

Oh and yes, you might try system restore but keep in mind that most times, system restore will tell you it can't go back to the previous state.

Jogego, is this the only way you do the backing-up? by burning into cd only or there are other ways?Huh?

Ynot, i have done the system restore, it did the restoring but the speakers still did not work so i undid the restore and put it bck to d one i am currently using, so now i think i'll take Jogego's advise by restoring it bck to factory settings once he tell me if there are other ways of doing the backing up of the softwares on my laptop, reply back guys

If you have a network then you can do it the way I do mine. I just copy my files to another machine. If you can do this, then you don't need to burn CDs other than that, I don't know any other cost effective way.

Something just occurred to me, am going to send you a pm now.

If yu can lay your hands on any Live CD of any linux distro, you can use it to test your laptop to be sure the hardware is okay.

i av the same problem with my own toshiba satellite pro that i bought last year, so i guess its not a new thing with that brand of laptops. mine was even better the first speaker stopped working first and then the second one followed, and the annoying thing is that they got spoilt after the warranty expired Lips sealed Embarrassed

to think that i bought it 115,000 at palms

GUys, there are two simple fix to all your speaker problems, first, Unscrew your laptop, test your speakers to see if its physicaly dammaged, just to see if its working now if its wokring, that means
you might have a device conlflict, if this is not in the case(check in Device management to see first)
now  if you look behing your laptop, there should be a Model number or a service number, copy this and go to the manufacturer's website, go to their device drivers menu put in the model number and download and install all the sound drivers,
Hope these helps.
