Celebrities / Let's Talk About Omoni Oboli's Love Is War, Which Is Coming To Netflix Next Week by okenol(m): 2:20pm On Apr 26, 2020
Winning a gubernatorial election in Nigeria is tough, but for an honest person like Hankuri Philips, the lead character in Omoni Oboli’s Love is War (now streaming on Netflix), there are higher odds of a camel passing through the proverbial needle’s eye. Hankuri (played by Oboli) is contesting the top seat in Ondo state, but there is a little problem, she is from Niger. More problems: Her only opponent is her husband, Dimeji Phillips (Richard Mofe-Damijo), a medical doctor and Ondo’s favorite son. This premise is promising, but the execution — in writing and directing — falls short.
The script is from Naz Onuzo, who has a thing for intricate storylines, exciting ideas that come out problematic (The Arbitration) or messy (Out of Luck). An exception in his oeuvre is the remarkable The Set Up, a plot-driven screenplay Niyi Akinmolayan (Chief Daddy) engineered into a smart ride. Onuzo’s latest, Love is War, is billed as a dramedy, but its true potential lies as a political thriller.
The film journeys through the muddy waters of Nigeria’s politics with a feminist lens. Hankuri has been handpicked by the President to run for Governor under the PPM party. She starts her campaign by lobbying support from essential party members, but the men all seek her submission: In one scene, the incumbent Governor of Ondo (Akin Lewis) demands she and a female senator bow to greet him. Hankuri is not the submissive type, but she quickly learns the game of politics. When Otunba (Jide Kosoko), one of her party’s big players, demands excessively, she connives with a bigger power — the incumbent Governor — to sideline him. Nipped by this, Otunba invents a diabolical plan to get back at Mrs. Phillips and his former party — he conspires with the opposition to tempt her husband into running against her. If Dimeji declines, the narrative will be that Hankuri is a selfish, power-hungry woman who won’t let her husband shine. If he accepts, he risks going to war with the love of his life. Either way, the couple suffers.
After consulting with his wife, Dimeji agrees to contest against her, but there’s a twist: He isn’t going to campaign, he will be her Trojan horse. But what the naïve couple failed to realize is that in Nigerian politics the party wins the election, not the candidate.

Celebrities / Most Anticipated Nollywood Movies Coming To Cinemas This December by okenol(m): 7:55am On Nov 17, 2018
While the year started with the usual comedies that do not challenge or engage the moviegoer, it is ending with a bang.

Kemi Adetiba’s audacious King of Boys is killing it commercially – the movie has grossed 100 million – and is revered among critics.

While Ay’s Merry Men – arguably the best Ay movie till date – has found his way into the upper echelon of Nollywood’s highest grossing movies. The movie has made over 260 million naira.

However, things are about to get even better because the Nollywood movies opening this December feature potential mega box office hits and critically acclaimed movies.

In a series of tweet, techprenuer and founder of Anakles Films, Editi Effiong revealed among many other things that the Governor of Bauchi state, Abdullahi Abubakar, will be starring in Tope Oshin’s Up North.

Not only did Governor Abubakar volunteer to star in the movie, he has been committed to making it a success from day one.

Editi Effiong, who is one of the movies executive producer, tweeted that the Governor offered his convoy when the crew had difficulties finding cars for a convoy for a scene, offered Yankari reserves as the crew could not get a hotel, and got the crew permission to shoot at the Emir’s place. Celebrities / 2018 Most Anticipated Nigerian Movies by okenol(m): 9:57pm On Jan 02, 2018
2017 was an interesting year for the Nigerian Film Industry. There were breakout stars, social media comedians getting lead roles – Frank Donga in Hakkunde – and minor roles – Wofai Fada in Catch.Er and The Wedding Party.

The year also gave us lovable characters – Jobe in Picture Perfect, and loads of comedies.

2017 also witnessed a form of maturity in Nollywood, with refreshing movies such as Walt Banger’s Catch.Er, A Hotel Called Memory and Ojukokoro, which is termed by many as the best film of the year.

We also witnessed the record-breaking Wedding Party 2 (read my review), which is on its way to becoming Nollywood’s highest grossing movie of all time.

So, what about 2018? What are the must-see Nollywood movies of 2018?

MY SIX MOST ANTICIPATED NOLLYWOOD MOVIES OF 2018.
1. THE ROYAL HIBISCUS HOTEL

Photo: Mo Abudu’s IG
The Royal Hibiscus Hotel is a rom-com starring Zainab Balogun, Jide Kosoko, and Kenneth Okolie. Produced and directed by Mo Abudu and Ishaya Bako (Road to Yesterday) respectively. It premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the only Nigerian movie selected.

Mo Abudu has become a force to reckon with in Nollywood. Every film she has produced – Fifty, The Wedding Party 1 and 2 – is among the top ten highest grossing Nigerian movies ever. So, as expected, many of us are interested to see what she has in store for us with TRHH.

The Royal Hibiscus Hotel starts showing in cinemas nationwide from 10 February 2018.

2. GETTING OVER HIM

Photo: Uduak Isong’s IG
Getting Over Him is a Romantic-Comedy written and produced by Uduak Isong. It is a story about getting over a cheating lover.

Mimi finds out her boyfriend has been two-timing and she may have been the side chic. Heartbroken she finds solace in a blog that takes her on a step-by-step guide to finding love again.

Cast includes Majid Micahel, Matilda Obaseki, Deyemi Okanlawon, Olive Emodi and Bimbo Ademoye.

Getting Over Him is directed by Desmond Elliot and will be cinemas nationwide from January 26, 2018.

3. AMINA

Photo: Themovieamina IG
Amina is my most anticipated Nollywood movie of 2018. It is epic, bloody and contains well-choreographed action scenes you see in epic movies like 300 and Troy. Well, not as great as those but this is a Nigerian film.

It is directed by Izu Ojukwu, known for the “76.” Amina tells the story of the legendary Queen Amina of Zaria.

Cast includes Lucy Ameh, Ali Nuhu, Yakubu Mohammed and Clarion Chukwura. No official date but you can watch the trailer below.

4. KADA RIVER

Photo: Toka McBaror’s IG
A historical film by Toka Mcbaror, who has an eye for movies set in the nineties. His 2017 movie, Lotanna, was one of the best Nollywood movies I saw last year and I saw a lot. From the costume, score to cinematography, attention was given to every little detail.

Kada River, like Lotanna, stars Chris Okagbue and follows the love story of Jerome and Nadia amidst the 2000 Kaduna crisis.

Kada River stars Joke Silva, Keppy Ekpenyong-Bassey, and Rachel Oniga. It will be in cinemas nationwide from February 21, 2018.

5. DEATH ISLAND

Photo: Toka McBaror’s IG
War is coming! Something different is coming. Toka Mcbrabor is directing this one too. He is one of the few directors pushing the boundaries in Nollywood.

Death Island Movie represents a story that creates a perception of corruption in the nation’s security.

Death Island stars Segun Arinze, Sambasa Nzeribe, Femi Adebayo and T-Boss. There is no official release date for Death Island yet, but we are hoping it is sometime this year. Have a glimpse of the movie in the teaser below.

6. LION HEART

Photo: Lionheartthemovie IG
Why are we looking forward to Lion Heart? It is Genevieve Nnaji’s directorial debut and it features a cast richer than the star-studded cast of The Wedding Party.

Lion Heart, Nnaji’s first movie since 2015’s Road to Yesterday and was shot in Enugu. It stars Pete Edochie, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Nkem Owoh, Kalu Ikeagwu, Onyeka Onwenu

The Wedding Party 2 Review: Hilarious, Enjoyable but not Great

DECEMBER 28, 2017 - MOVIES, REVIEWS

In 2015, Nollywood experienced something remarkable – The Wedding Party. A team of some of Nigeria elite film production companies assembled a cast of our favorite celebrities and gave them an interesting story to play with.

The result was a remarkable ROI like nothing Nollywood has seen before. So, as expected, there had to be a sequel and that is how The Wedding Party 2: Dubai Destination came about. With expectations at the rooftop level, the ELFIKE team took everything to another dimension except the story, acting and a few things a film aficionado will love.

The Wedding Party 2 was supposed to have exciting pre-intimacy, long-lasting main event, and a beautiful climax. Instead, it had rushed pre-intimacy, a not-so-main event, and no climax.

Let me explain.

THE WEDDING PARTY 2 REVIEW: STORY

The Wedding Party 2 focuses (or is supposed to) on Dendre (Daniela Down) – one of the Dunni’s bridesmaids in Part 1 – and Nonso (Enyinna Nwigwe).

Dendre and Nonso have been in a relationship for six months. We did not get a glimpse of that by the way.

During a dinner date at an expensive restaurant in Dubai, he accidentally proposes and she said yes. You know the Wedding Party franchise is all about wedding disasters and this accidental proposal set things off for a chain of disasters.

Dendre’s dad was not particularly okay with the idea of his daughter, an heir to the throne, albeit by a long shot, marrying a Nigerian. But he eventually agrees and travels in the company of his wife and daughter to Nigeria for the introduction cum traditional marriage.

One thing leads to another and the white wedding was taken to Dubai.

THE WEDDING PARTY 2 REVIEW: THE BAD

Given the success of the prequel, you would expect the ELFIKE gang to put tremendous effort into ensuring that this second installment will be perfect in every manner – cinematography, story, acting and directing. They did get a few things right but they also got an awful lot wrong and you may be tempted to think it was deliberate.

The Wedding Party 2 was written casually. It felt as though much thought did not go into the writing. It was shallow and full of inconsistencies.

What made The Wedding Party 1 really enjoyable were the disasters that rocked Dunni and Dozie’s wedding. They made sense. From Rosie (Beverly Naya) planting an underwear in Dozie’s pocket to Sola playing that infamous video.

In this sequel, Rosie, who was not invited, flew herself to Dubai and somehow heard about the proposal being unintentional and snitched.

How is Tinuade Coker, played by Sola Sobowale, more involved than Ujwu, played by Ireti Doyle, when none of her kids are involved in the wedding? Yes, she is funnier, this is rom-com and they need the audience to laugh but C’mon!

The supposed lead characters, Dendre and Nonso were not even given enough screen time. We did not feel any chemistry between them; there were no special moments like the beach scene involving Dunni and Dozie in the original movie.

The story still manages to do some good; at least it made us laugh.

But the one area The Wedding Party 2 fails tremendously is casting. Many characters were not needed, at all. Wofai Fada, Saka, Ay, the white Mc, the list goes on.

Unneeded characters led to scenes that felt like comedy skits, with no connection to the story. When or if you have watched, you will know what I am talking about.

THE WEDDING PARTY 2 REVIEW: THE GOOD

Boy, this film was hilarious! You will laugh your heart out. We, Nigerians, love comedy and the producers gave us that and more.

The picture was also great. Beautiful locations, it felt like a tour of Dubai.

Sola Sobowale was great. Even though I think her character was utilized wrongly, she was amazing. What stands out for me as regards her performance was the scene in which she cried at dinner after receiving some harsh words from Ujwu.

The best actor here is surprisingly Michael de Pinna, who plays Deandre’s father. He was effortlessly funny and unlike RMD who did not, convincedly, deliver his role as a rich Igbo man, Michael oozes out the type of pride expected of a man from the British royal family in the midst of Nigerians.

I really like how we were introduced to the next couple. It did not feel out of place as most things in this sequel. It came naturally.

If you are a typical Nigerian, you will enjoy The Wedding Party 2. If you are a film aficionado, you will enjoy it too because it is really funny.

Although, you will wish for more. A better story, more screen time for the lead characters – Dendre and Nonso. Elimination of the unneeded scenes – Saka and Wofai Fada at the airport, the useless fight between Ay and the white Mc.

I just hope part 3 focuses on Sola (Ikechukwu) and Yemisi (Somleke Iyamah-idhalama) and their families. Yes, we are most likely going to get a part 3.

Linda Ikeji hopes to disrupt the Nigerian TV space in 2018 with a reality TV show – Oyinbo Wives of Lagos – unlike anything we have seen in Naija. I think this one is perfect for the lovers of the Kardashian series and Telemundo.

The show is about six Nigerian women married to white men who live in Lagos. Awon maga! The show promises to come with “drama, fights, friendship, laughter.” “And more drama like you’ve never seen before.”

There are no official updates on the cast, trailer or release date but here is what we know. Starting with the obvious, Linda is executively producing and the show is shot in Lagos. Samari Daniel is directing and Eloho Okumo is producing.

Oyinbo Wives of Lagos will air on the Linda Ikeji TV channel on DSTV and YouTube. It is coming out sometime in 2018, no official release date.
Late last year, Linda Ikeji expanded her brand beyond blogging; starting an online TV network, online radio, music website and a social community.

Linda stated that the online TV network – Linda Ikeji TV – will have several shows including reality shows, game shows, entertainment/ sports programs, talks show etc. and had recently announced that she is now buying TV content.

A few hours ago, Omoni Oboli released the Wives on Strike: The Revolution trailer on YouTube and it was everything I hoped for. If you thought the prequel was funny, you are going to laugh your heart out on December 29 when The Revolution starts showing in cinemas nationwide.

The Wives are back and no more jangolover!

On Wives on strike, the movement was as a result of child marriage but from what we saw on the Wives on Strike: The Revolution trailer, the movement is now as a result of domestic violence. Just as in Omoye.

Watch the hilarious trailer below

https://www.thatnollywoodblog.com/wives-strike-revolution-trailer/

Odunlade Adekola, who played the role of a wife beater in Celebrity Marriage is doing the same here. I am eager to watch him and fellow new casts’ – Sola Sobowale, Oyetoro Hafiz, Chigurl, Titobiloluwa Segun-Banjo and Toyin Abraham – performances.

Especially Toyin, Hafiz, and Sola, who spiced the trailer.

Returning cast includes Omoni Oboli, Kenneth Okonkwo, Uche Jumbo, Chioma Akpotha, Emeka Oke and Julius Agwu.

READ THE OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS BELOW:
“Our favourite local market women team up again to solve another problem. Domestic violence hit close to home and the women must engage the government or become the government. The situation, it seems, is impossible to ignore. Twists, drama, frustrations, and schemes make this tug of war a hilarious revolution. Will the society survive another Wives on Strike episode?”

There are a few things I do not get though. What happened to the original Baba Amina? Udoka Oyeka, who played Baba Amina in the prequel, has been replaced by Sani Danja.

Another thing I do not get from the Wives on Strike: The Revolution trailer is the reason the women ran from the country. I am guessing I will not know until December 29.

What do you think of the trailer? Let me know in the comment section below.
