Fauci said US government held off promoting face masks because it knew shortages were so bad that even doctors couldn't get enough

In an interview with the financial-news site TheStreet, Dr. Anthony Fauci said the public was initially told not to wear masks to stop COVID-19 because of shortages of PPE for doctors.
He said the government's shift in advice was because of "changing circumstances" and new research.
He denied that earlier advice against wearing a mask was a contradiction of the new policy.
Fauci now advocates masks "unequivocally" as a complementary measure to social distancing.

Dr. Anthony Fauci said Friday the reason the public was advised not to wear masks at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic was that there were too few to go around.

In an interview with the financial-news site TheStreet, Fauci, the US government's foremost infectious-diseases expert, was asked about the changing government advice on wearing masks.

In January through March, as the spread of the disease became more and more serious, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention actively discouraged the use of masks among the general public.

By early April, simple cloth face coverings were recommended for the general public, instead of protective personal equipment such as surgical and N95 masks, The New York Times reported.


Fauci's comments echo those of Surgeon General Jerome Adams on March 2, when he said that the increased demand for masks was putting medical professionals at risk.

A few days earlier, he tweeted that masks were "not effective in preventing" COVID-19 in the general public, saying, "Seriously people- STOP BUYING MASKS!" He later reversed his advice.

Fauci explained the early advice against masks by saying: "The public-health community — and many people were saying this — were concerned that it was at a time when personal protective equipment, including the N95 masks and the surgical masks, were in very short supply."

N95 masks are higher-grade equipment than ordinary masks and mainly used by medical workers.

He added that the government did not want healthcare workers "to be without the equipment that they needed ... We were afraid that that would deter away the people who really needed it."

The government also knows more about the effectiveness of different types of masks than it did at the beginning, he said.

"Now we have masks, and we know that you don't need an N95 if you're an ordinary person in the street," he said. "We also know that simple cloth coverings that many people have can work as well as a mask in many cases."

Fauci acknowledged the appearance of a contradiction in the government's public-health advice but denied this was the case. "Actually the circumstances have changed," he said. "That's the reason why."


Fauci also came out "unequivocally" in favor of wearing masks in public, even though they do not offer a guarantee.

"Masks are not 100% protective," he said. "However, they certainly are better than not wearing a mask."

He also advocated social distancing, with masks as a backup.

"So physical separation ... is the best way to get a virus not to get to you," he said.

Amasa Firdaus, the Nigerian Law School graduate denied access to the venue of the call to bar ceremony has denied suing the House of Representatives or engaging lawyers as her counsel in any case.

National Secretary of the #Justiceforfirdaus Advocacy Group, Alaka Folashade In’amullah in a statement said that a video clip in circulation on the matter is fraudulent.

In’amullah stressed that the purported lawyer in the video, who claimed to be acting on behalf of Miss Amasa Firdaus, is unknown to them.

“We wish to state clearly and without any equivocation that Miss Amasa Firdaus did not file any matter at the Federal High Court Abuja or any other court whatsoever to stop the public hearing scheduled by the House of Representatives.

“The media report in the video clip can therefore be described as the figment of imagination of its peddlers.

“Once again for the umpteenth time, Firdaus is not looking for any cheap popularity and will only speak to the press when it is time. We wonder why the media will be interested in misrepresenting the facts and engaging in sensationalism.

“It is worrisome that (the lawyer) who was described in the video clip as a legal practitioner, would recklessly allow himself to be held out as counsel to Miss Amasa Firdaus in a matter he and his cohorts filed for whatever motive they wanted to achieve.

Man rapes neighbour’s daughter, lands in courtPublished on February 9, 2018 By Daily Post Staff

A 42-year-old man, Michael Ntia, who allegedly raped his neighbour’s daughter, was on Friday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The accused, residing in Adebayo Street in Alakuko area of Lagos, is standing trial on a count charge of rape.


The prosecutor, Insp. Clifford Ogu, told the court that the offence was committed on Jan. 26 at the accused residence.

Ogu said that the accused lured the 14-year-old girl into his room under the pretext of sending her to buy food for him and raped her.

He added that the girl told her senior sister, who later informed their mother, and the case was reported at the police station.

The offence contravenes Section 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 259 prescribes life imprisonment upon conviction.

The Chief Magistrate, Taiwo Akanni, granted the accused bail of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Akanni, however, adjourned the case until Feb. 26 for mention. (NAN)

A former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Jumoke Akinjide, has returned N650 million to the Federal Government.

Akinjide informed the court about this development today, when she notified Justice Muslim Sule Hassan of a Federal High Court in Lagos of her plans to reach an out-of-court settlement with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The EFCC had preferred a fraud and money laundering charge against her over the campaign money for the Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State received from the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

Responding, EFCC’s lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo, said he is not opposed to an adjournment to allow for discussion between parties.

He said: “I confirmed the discussion with the silk this morning. But I want to say that the matter before the court is not principally about campaign funds.

“I also confirmed that the commission had recovered the sum of N650 million, not from the chieftains and principal members of the PDP, but rather from the first defendant (Oloye Jumoke Akinjide).

“Section 270 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015 allow parties to discuss. In view of the fact that the silk has applied for an adjournment to allow for discussion, we would not be objecting to his application”.

After listening to the submissions of the two parties in the matter, The Presiding judge, Justice Hassan adjourned further hearing in the matter till February 22.
