This is a two way thing. Firstly, you should know a worker in a private company doesn't have rights , yes , i say so with much regrets but it's the reality in Nigeria. Even if you sue them , they can afford lawyers while you can't. I still wonder the usefulness of NLC. The private sector employs majority of Nigerians while the government only a minor fraction. Lastly, just put it in mind that as long as you are an employee anything you do won't make much of an impact. The new owners would just infiltrate their ranks and that would be the last we hear of this so-called Union. It's been stated in most companies contract that they don't recognize union or association. Though what they demand is Thier right, but in Nigeria what they should be praying for is an employer that would do better. Trust me , ShopRite will open and most of those people carrying plycards would be history. |

CanadaOrBust: Do you understand how employment laws work? You obviously don't, so shut up. They are supposed to be paid terminal benefits before they then sign any new contracts/terms of employment. That is what the law says. That is how every company takeover/sale/buy must be handled. The Head of HR has brought disgrace to Shoprite and should be asked to resign immediately. What insolence! 1 Like |

Joysticks: Exactly what they are fighting for. They should be paid off from the sale and asked to apply. Or u asked who wants to reapply continue and those that don’t want to are paid off. That’s how it shud be done actually. They have a valid case. 1 Like |

CanadaOrBust:You just spoke without experience. Try and get wisdom. Shop rite is playing up trick to avoid them being paid-off. This is why they're taking them to the new owner. The new owner will ask them to reapply and decides who to employ and who not. Those employed could be undervalued (pay less than shoprite) and cut down many benefits. Employees could be maltreated and left to their fate while shoprite is gone. |

CanadaOrBust: The former owners must pay any outstanding they owe the workers. If they pay them off and the new investors want their service, they will hire them on fresh terms and negotiations. |

This nonsense can not go down in a sane country with a decent labour Congress. How do you sell a company and it's workers... I have never heard of this anywhere before 1 Like |

SEGLIZ: Who do you call “Shoprite”? The original owners are gone. Who they are punishing are the current owners. What they should be fighting for is a new contract with all arrears paid. Not to be paid to then leave! U say others can take their place. We are talking EXPERIENCE! A former employee can easily beat Shoprite in a particular niche the employee knows well. They don’t have to compete in all areas |

I don't get it, the new employer is supposed to TUPE the current employees with them. That is how it is done. Meaning the new employer should take on the current employees. |
