FireTheSun: you are better off, buying an electric car, or building one from scratch. converting a petrol vehicle to electric car..will end up costing more, as you only need the carbody, the engine, transmission aka gearbox, ecm aka brainbosdrive shaft etc are useless. this is similar to attempting to convert a 2wd SUV to 4wd. an exercise in futility. attempting to convert a petrol vehicle to electric is even worse exercise in futility raised to power 5!. max panel you can put on the roof of the car is about 900watss, even at max efficiency, you are looking at generating 4500watthour daily, which is a drop compared to the energy requirements of an EV 1 Like |

earthrealm: two yrs ago (2020), one of my colleagues was lamenting bitterly how his average monthly phcn bill was close to 50k monthly. he was forced to do some sharp practice in reducing the count rate of the meter and in the process unwittingly turned himself into a milking cow to the nepa guy who did the job for him. when he saw that the amount he was being extorted was becoming almost if not more than what he thought he was saving by altering the meter, he was forced to ask phcn to revert the meter back to normal! anyway, imagine paying 50k monthly for 5yrs (with the myto tarriff structure the rate keeps increasing year on year) so, in 5yrs even if you live in an area where you enjoy steady power supply, you would have paid phcn an equivalent amount of money which you could have used in setting up a complete, functional solar system. and, it gets even crazier for the 'big man' with a diesel 'plant' in your analogy. with diesel prices hitting btw 900 and 1000 naira per liter, a solar set up would cover the cost of running such a plant in less than a year! 4 Likes |

FireTheSun: On the average, 2 years in Nigeria to recoup your investment if you consider the cost of cooking gas and have been able to upgrade to systems that can support induction cookers especially on sunny days.
You're not the only one that has seriously been considering that. Good thing is that EV is about the easiest thing to do although the efficiency may not be top notch if you're to convert existing ICEs to EVs. The former are usually heavier than new EVs with their uni body construction, something which ensures that as much as 400 auto parts are done away with, including bolts, screws etc. And I don't believe there is knowledge gap in Nigeria as it pertains to EVs especially in the most basic iterations of it. The minds on this thread alone are brilliant enough to DIY EVs if the conditions and atmosphere are eased, conditions like procuring batteries for example . There is a video of a Hausa man who has converted his fleets of small transport buses to EVs and given it out to drivers who come to charge it in his massive solar shed. With full charge, it drives for 5 hrs (they didn't give estimates in Kilometers) Let me just chip this in. I produce excess solar electricity for the appliances that I have at the moment. So wify just woke up one day and suggested that the excess be channelled into making cold products for outside consumption. Mind you, this street and many adjoining ones have been suffering in the hands of NEPA for ages. Ńa so she rent one shop not far from the building, we come extend armoured cables to the place, purchase freezers, start Ice block, packaged water, soft drinks etc. People travel kilometers to this place just to get chilled products including ice blocks. If you make around 90k profit monthly on iced block alone, calculate how much in a year. Then come add bags of chilled packaged water sold on daily basis. It's one year now and she has recouped thrice the money she spent in getting two deep freezers and a fridge. Me I come dey look myself say I no think deep say I fit still make money from my power; all along what I kept thinking about was how to keep increasing my power generation, but ńa wify come think better thing for me. Two correct heads are indeed better than one. 11 Likes |

earthrealm: Personally I still think a mega rich opting for a massive sound proof diesel gen for his home in Nigeria is being naira wise, kobo foolish. The reason is @ the bolded. I am still one of the impoverished class of the society but if by chance I become mega rich in Nigeria today, (whistles), chai I will make sure I get small solar set ups for every home of the poor in my street. What is the sense in getting a humongous diesel gen when it's not that I'm powering a factory and running after expensive diesel when I can afford the quite life of the sun. Solar is so sweet that it is a thing of joy to see people join the bandwagon of AE. 2 Likes |

GeorgeD1: This has been my calculation and why I am currently completely disconnected from the grid. The small 5kw system paired with 14.5kwh lifepo4 diy cells with smart energy management is giving me a better deal than hooking up to nepa and 45% of the system is from components that i have had in the last 3 years (which have all paid off their initial purchase price) in 3 years the upgrade I carried out in switching to lifepo4 and addtional PV would pay for itself. In this inflationary period, not having to worry about NEPA bill is once less thing to worry about. 7 Likes |

drizzypat: I would even say it is your best source of distilled water. Most distilled water sold in Nigeria (even in major malls and super markets) are adulterated. Try get from an AC with relatively clean hose and use a white cloth (I use a dedicated clean cotton signet for it) to filter it into a jar and you have your distilled water. It served me for over 3 years. 1 Like |

Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by bigrovar(m): 9:55am On Jun 22, 2022 |
drizzypat:The best way to top is when the battery is fully charged. Please avoid doing this when the battery is heavily discharged - this is due to the low gravity state of the battery essentially at that level what you have is pretty much just water, adding more at that stage is not good. It could allow corrosion of the internals of the battery. You want to add water when the battery is fully charged and thus gravity is high. |

Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by IYGEAL(m): 6:28pm On Jun 22, 2022 |
dollarnaira: Try normal cookers. I searched for inverter cookers and couldn't find reliable ones/sources. You can try the double burner fairly used electric cookers with glass tops or order induction cooker from Konga/Jumia. The used cooker may consume up to 2kw for the bigger burners, depending on size. Smaller sizes consume less than 1kw. Cleaner and apparently newer ones consume less. They all cook well. @Valto may have some for sale too. |
