Imagine her saying the longevity of a marriage isn’t the prize and yet she is still with her husband. If people go ahead with this mentality, then they will
Opt out anytime there is a small difficulty which could have been settled amicably. Where did she put the marriage vows? For better for worse? Till death do is part. That’s what makes marriage different from other institutions. It’s a partnership till you are old and if you are able to last that much with your partner then you have won the prize of marriage.
You mean you would have won a marriage prize like you put it, by staying in a toxic, mentally and emotionally draining union? I'll rather leave the prize for you and stay happy. Hmm.

At the expense of the mental health, growth and development of their children?

The truth of the matter is, we have lost the true concept of marriage.

Marriage has not, since time immemorial, being a rossy affair as portrayed in Korean movies. Marriage is 50% love, 50% mercy.

In fact marriage is more of difficulty than ease, because this is the coming together of two imperfect beings who have lived two unidentical way of life and have been raised by parents who were also unidentical in their ideologies.

So whilst we claim that divorce is a civil right to maintaining the mental health of the couples, we should also CONDEMN premarital affair in all ramifications , the idea of marrying the one that got you pregnant (it’s evil) and forced marriages.

Let’s help the society grow, this nation has been filled with bastards and children with imbalanced ethical and moral upbringing.

Finally, Marriage is not comprised of only LOVE, it is also comprised of MERCY, a larger percentage of it. This is because that flare you got before marrying that person will reduce with; child birth, intimacy and environmental factor.

So when the love starts fading, only MERCY for your kids and partner should remain.

Senseless talk. She should as well explain how their children will be without the trauma and be happy ever after.
Instead of promoting unity she's doing busy body that will further derail a derailing society all in the name of attention seeking.
We are not taught like this in Islam and she should respect the hijab.
And for guys in favor of divorce, saying religion brain-washed people, please go back in history and you'll understand marriage was in a society pre-religion.

■The high rate of divorce in this generation is not an ailment. Rather, it is a symptom of an ailment; toxic generation.

Why is it getting increasingly difficult for people of this generation to live in peace with another person for the rest of their lives?

Yet, it's this same generation that wants to change the country. Generation that can't adjust for one person!
1. This problem did not start with this or the last generation as I can confirm that as far back as the 1980s Marriage abandonment , the informal divorce that society seems to find be more accepting of, has been a problem of major concern. What is happening today is more and more are refusing to accept that sort of rejection and fortunately our laws have finally caught up. undecided

Again, Divorce is not trending ... it is only now becoming less shameful to admit you are divorced. Marriage abandonment where the abandoned spouse lived in shame was more the norm before now. Fortunately, it has been criminalized and so forcing people to get a divorce instead of abandoning their spouse in marriage. undecided

Each party should learn contentment, perseverance, forgiveness and loyalty. That is what we need to preach, not divorce as long as you were adults that knew your lest from right before getting married. 80% of divorcees end up living a more miserable life silently eventually.

Sadly it seems a majority of nairalanders are bereft of comprehension skills.

Aisha is simply saying if the marriage is not working out you can part ways before it leads to disaster. She is saying your happiness, health and peace of mind as well as mental state is of paramount importance.

It's very foolish to remain in a car headed for the cliff when you know you can jump out the door, same way only a fool stays in an abusive marriage that will lead to death.

This New Year, do yourself a favor, pick up and a read a book to help you gain what are critical reasoning skills. I recommend the book Being Logical, but any text that can help you hone your ability to reason logically will be a good place to start. undecided

You have valid points but your two points are what religion help to address in creating a sane society. Life is not a bed of roses. If we all truly follow and live what religion preaches we would have less of these problems.

That's what some people call "Wokeness".

Divorce is like a common "taboo" in many parts of Nigeria, especially the predominantly muslim north, and the city centers of the south especially the south west. It's also fast rising in the old eastern region.

I think divorce is more common in the North than South here. The reason why people don't notice this is that when they divorce, they don't stay single for long before they got into another marriage. Unlike here.
