If this is true, why is dollar still high, why is it not reflecting on the economy and development?

shocked

If true and well sustained, we will no longer have FX crises soon.

God bless Nigeria

The reduction in imports is because of how difficult it is to get forex to import. It's not a good thing. That's the reason things have gotten much more expensive, and why a drug formerly sold at 4k is now sold at 50k,+

It would be nice if true but I don't trust this new management of NBS with their wuruwuru statistics unless they present evidence.

83% of our exports was crude oil. imagine undecided

Crude oil we will buy back almost half after refining in dollars. Do the trade surplus us from crude oil sales.

We are not benefiting from China. Chinese products are the reason our economy is in comatose because they have destroyed our indigenous products.

Go to Aba were shoes, bags and belt are produced locally then notice how many people are out of job because Chinese shoes have ruined their business. These Chinese shoes are substandard compared to the ones made by Nigerians yet people prefer it because it looks beautiful.

Same with Adire produces in Abeokuta. Chinese adire has made many to go jobless.

If the minister of trade is not aware of these, then she doesn't know what she is doing.

Local products like that must be protected by banning Chinese from importing then here or place heavy tax on then so that people will preffer to buy locally made products.

That's what South Korea did with their automobile industry. Anybody willing to bring foreign car into korea must pay triple to buy it hence Korea cars are preferred to foreign cars in Korea. It's not because they actually prefer a Korean car to foreign cars but but the price forced them to buy cheaper Korean cars.

Anyone with foreign cars in Korea are extremely rich.

What about goods smuggled from Cotonou, and porous borders in Sokoto, Katsina, and Borno? The Cotonou imports is more than NGN10 Trillion alone.

In as much as this is a good news. I still think it can be a little bit misleading also. If all the 43 banned items are unbanned and our export still edges pur import, then I feel we are then really doing a good job to upscale our export.

Stop lumping everybody with your failure. Get more productive with your life and you will witness a remarkable personal change. Some people are smilling now having hit it big. Ghost did not make those figures happen. It is a pity some people liked your comments. Birds of the same feathers.

You meant you are starving. Go work very hard. There are opportunities in this country. When people travel abroad they work all day and night and sleep less. They do more than a job. However lazy folks like you will watch TV all night and or browse at night. Get busy and you will not starve

Hehehe.

Na statistics we go chop grin : grin, baba Tinubu 2023.

The ones that previously don't believe in statistics will suddenly believe in it now because it's in favour of the government of the day grin cheesy.

Nigeria is a cruise country.

Meanwhile those who did believe then will suddenly stop believing now. cheesy Wahala!

But then to be fair to the old man, I believe what he said/meant wasn't that statistics don't matter, but rather, practical applications of the statistics to the Nigerian context is what is relevant. This was in the context of Uncle Pete always citing statistics to portray knowledge of a situation rather than to describe a solution. In any case, it seems he is part of those who no longer believe in statistics too because he doesn't seem to quote them off head anymore!

cheesy

But if the same NBS says unemployment has increased, you will believe it hook line and sinker.

If your trade balance is positive then your currency appreciates - unless you decide to keep your currency artificially low (China for example keeps the renminbi artificially low to keep its exports competitive and maintain that positive trade balance).

As far as I am aware, Nigeria is not keeping the Naira artificially low. So how can such a large trade surplus of N3.5 trillion (this trade surplus is about 15% of your entire 2023 budget (supplementary budget included)) not lead to appreciation of the local currency? undecided And the year isn't over mind you - if this positive trade balance (as reported) continues, then the year end trade surplus should be even larger. Some posters have mentioned a lag before the effects of a trade surplus can be seen. How long? A year? A decade?

Something is not adding up.
