GEJ's Former Adviser, Reno Omokri, Answers A Fan's Question About Onitsha by opamoses1: 10:36am On Dec 28, 2023
Reno Omokri writes on Facebook:

Dear @NgwuNgwanu,

Thank you for your feedback. Well, there are a number of issues with your assertions. Onitsha itself was brought into the modern era by Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther, who was from Osogun, a town under Oyo and, by extension, Ibadan.

Bishop Crowther brought Christianity to Onitsha in 1855 and opened the way for that religion to enter Igbo land. Before him, that entire area had not experienced the light of the Gospel. Bishop Crowther thereafter documented his missionary works in Igboland in a book published in 1855 titled 'Journal of an Expedition up the Niger and Tshadda Rivers.'

He also wrote the first ever book in the Igbo language, titled 'Isoama-Ibo: A Primer', published in 1857. Bishop Crowther then wrote the second book about the Igbo language titled 'Vocabulary of the Ibo Language', published in 1882.

So, if someone from the greater Ibadan area (Osogun) did that much for Onitsha and Igboland, don't you think you could be more courteous with your words about Ibadan? After all, nobody from Ibadan has insulted you and your communities.

Secondly, Onitsha was founded by people originally from the ancient Benin Empire.

The most authoritative encyclopaedia on Earth is the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Please read what they have to say about Onitsha:

"The town lies on the east bank of the Niger River just south of its confluence with the Anambra River. Founded by adventurers from Benin (nearby, to the west) in the early 17th century, it grew to become the political and trading centre of the small Igbo (Ibo) kingdom of Onitsha."

You can read more here-https://www.britannica.com/place/Onitsha-Nigeria

The word 'kingdom' cannot be used for Igbo land because you had no kings. At the village level, you did have priests. But never kings. Until the British imposed warrant chiefs on you in the late 1890s. You lived in autonomous clans that were almost constantly at war with each other, which made it easy for smaller ethnicities, like the Bini, Ijaw, and Itsekiris, to raid your communities for enslaved people. Igbo enslaved people built the Great Wall of Benin and its moats.

I have receipts from my ancestors for about 100 Igbo enslaved people. I gave a copy of the receipt to Asari Dokubo and appealed to him not to publish it. But if we need to set the records straight, then I am able to publish it for historical purposes. My ancestors were prolific slave traders. It's not a thing of pride, but history is history. I only mention it here to enable you to understand your history and why you behave the way you do today.

If the Benin Empire founded Onitsha, and the Benin Empire had a royal family who are descendants of a Yoruba Prince from Ile-Ife, then what is the basis of your assertions?

The issue is that many of you are unaware of your history and that shallowness makes you say things easily debunked by documented history.

Anyway, thank you for your insults and may God bless you.

Yes. He took with him 2 Igbos (freed slaves) from Freetown in Sierra Leone to the igbo hinterland. He is a very brave man..prior to that, the region was largely unexplored by the whites.

The important lesson here is that a house divided against itself can not stand.

Igbo tribe is a large one but their " na me score am mentality" allowed smaller tribes to enslave and pillage them.

A true case of divided we fall, united we stand.

We saw this " I must make am before you syndrome " on full display when Soludo from Anambra state and Wike an Igbo from Ikwerre openely sabotaged their own kinsman Peter Obi in his aspirations to become President...instead of giving him all the support that he needed as the people's choice.

Now the whole Nigeria dey suffer am.

That's the same plan that the British used in Africa and India conquests. Divide and conquer.

You gave a copy to Asari Dokubo, because he is a Professor of history?
The Reno Omonkey can't even hide his foolish motive?
The mumu even said his ancestors were slave traders. Human trafficking!!

Mazi Ogbonnaya Okoro will tear Reno Omonkey into pieces as usual.

He was extremely brave too. I guess he was no longer afraid since his own freedom from slavery was like a rebirth. Those were the days when Christians were not scared of dying for the gospel.

Remi Omokri don exposed the tribalist again. They are the one that always start the fight, but they can’t curtail the fight when it starts in full time.

Even today, Igbo still have that autonomous Clanish mentality. Imagine someone from Enugu cannot be market leader in Anambra.

Ajayi crowther wrote his own books himself, he was very educated, a linguist and missionary. His expedition to Africa was well documented.

Bishop Ajayi Crowther only cared about winning Africa for Christ

Crowther is actually one of Nigeria's National founding Fathers
Because it was he who went to Windsor Palace in November of 1851 to ask Queen Victoria to Bombard and Capture Lagos so as to end the evil Slave Trade
The British Captured Lagos a month Later and put Oba Akitoye on the Throne

Ajayi Crowther was asked to read part of the Bible to Queen Victoria in Yoruba while he was there

There was a news about that during Peter Obi's era too. Recently, Abia residents rejected a man from Anambra from becoming a mayor. Then the market stuff of recent too where some leadership stuff were reserved for some state often classified as core.

I get am before no be property.

Reno should continue to dwell in the unsure past, while he is being modernly reenslaved and the people he likes to cast aspersion against are moving in fast pace.

Ajay Crother he talked about was able to do whatever he did because he was a slave and who later returned. He also wrote the yoruba bible. There was nothing special about him. Any other person could have done that too, like many other people are doing now.

This Reno is just a coward. A very big one. You talk about slavery like it’s a new thing to anyone. Every time you keep bragging about how you have documents. Release it na, what are you scared of ? That after it , you wouldn’t have anything to brag about or insult us with.? 😂. Fool of the year . We have moved on , faster, better and stronger. Guess what ? We are just getting started. There’s nothing about the past that can shake us, stop us, or take us back.

All these illiterates like Reno need to stop writing in ignorance. Igbos had Kings on town levels even before the origin of England. The White man's understanding of Kingship was imperialist not clannish. Benin was an ethnic group with one King just like Itsekiri but the Igbos , Urhobos, Ijaws, Ibibios, Yorubas, Esans and other tribes had no central King but leaders of Hamlets known as Obi, Eze, Igwe, etc . During expansion of Benin from a Kingdom to Empire many of those other tribes were either forced or voluntarily accepted sovereignty of the Oba over them and started paying tributes to Benin but it wasn't for long before the Benin Empire weakened and the Oba lost his relevance in areas outside Benin proper .

Igboland is diverse from clan to clan, town to town and village to village unlike the tiny Itsekiri where he comes from. Ngwa alone is bigger than Itsekiri and same size as Benin ethnic group. Igbos believe in "live and let live" so nobody forced other people to speak their dialect or pay tribute to his tribe as King of all Igbos. Onitsha was just King of Onitsha, Aboh was just King of Aboh, Agbor was just King of Agbor, Abiriba was just King of Abiriba, Aro was just King of Aro, Nri was just King of Nri etc. Aro King never lorded over Ohafia and Abam despite thembeing involved in business together. Finally the Igbos raided by Benin,Ijaw and Itsekiri were the Delta State Igbos not Southeast. They had more Yoruba sold to slavery than Igbos but Reno in his illiteracy was trying to restrict Igboland to Onitsha while also stupidly saying his ancestors sold Igbos. The Southeast slave trade was done by the Aros in connivance with the Ohafias and Abams who are all Igbo tribes. The so called Ijaws in Rivers State are a blend of Aros, Abams, Ohafias, Ijaw tribes and their assimilated Isoama Igbo that ended up not being sold into slavery .
