Following the approval of a 300 per cent electricity tariff hike by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on Wednesday, DAILY POST outlines what Nigerians should know about the hike.

Recall that NERC approved 225 per Kilowatt for ‘Band A’ electricity customers in Nigeria.

The development represents a significant shift from electricity subsidy in the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry amid persistent epileptic power supply nationwide.

Customers Affected by Hike

NERC said that only Band A customers received at least 20 hours of power supplies from the eleven electricity distribution companies.

According to the Vice Chairman of NERC, Musiliu Oseni, only 15 per of the 12.12 million electricity customers in Nigeria are affected.

He explained that the tariff hike would not affect customers on B, C, D, and E, having less than 20 hours of power supply.

Implication of New Electricity Tariff

The hike implies that electricity consumers under Band A will pay 300 per cent more to get a power supply.

This means a complete electricity subsidy removal for customers under Band A.

However, the hike will not lead to an improvement in the electricity supply to the affected customers.

Date of hike commencement

According to the new tariff order, Discos commenced the implementation of the new electricity tariff on Wednesday, 3rd April 2024.

This means customers under Band A have begun paying 300 per cent more for electricity.

Meanwhile, since January 2024, customers across all bands have suffered epileptic power supply in Nigeria.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, blamed gas constraints for the erratic power supply in Nigeria.

Tinubu is a plague that has befallen this nation. Leaving in its wake hunger, starvation, high costs of goods and services, inflation, etc.

A catastrophe foretold

To me I don't see any reason for this 300% increase, Nigerians will pay for electricity, in return they give darkness, when the transformers are bad, Nigerian again will contribute money to buy new transformers still the Disco won't detuct from their bill. People living in location made up of mostly poor people, if they apply for meter, they won't get, even after payment. How will this increase, increase electricity production when the infrastructure is still the same.

You're hiking tariff by over 200% when power generation is still less than 5,000 megawatts. Coupled with the frequent collapse of the national grid like an epilepsy patient.

So technically, customers on Band A would not experience any visible improvement in power supply aside paying more for it.

How Tinubu's supporters still find a way to sing his praises despite his harsh suffocating policies which even the blind can see should be added among the 7 wonders of the world.

Many customers have been wrongly classified under band A.

The band rating is a SCAM.

Trust NERC at your own peril.

They said band A customers were paying 66 naira previously. But I paid around 77 naira many months ago despite the fact that I don't get up to 12 hours daily.

This govt jus like to play with our intelligence.... If you say 20hrs plus , no subsidy, then others may likely receive 20hrs plus becus we know the power is
usually kept unused....
Nobody shl believe that band A lies...
I know that here in Ikorodu, they can give us 20hrs daily, but they minimize it due to expenses...

If you cannot give everyone free meters, then you don't mean anything good to us...
Simply use the subsidies to provide free meters to all customers, so that we can have an option weda to remain with your grid or shift away.... When your revenue drops, then you will know how to regulate prices..
Thieves!

What this means is that band A will now have more power supply, carved out from other bands just to pacify band A and justify the upward review.
In essence, majority of Nigerians that fall under band B and below will now experience poorer supply.

Didn't the government think this through?

Government is just being insensitive and evil.

How can Nigerians be paying more than what people in developed countries are paying for electricity?

You have not even provided basic amenities
Minimum wage is about 20 dollars a month and this!?

MEANWHILE

The criminal company
African Alliance company PLC has refused to pay me and many others their insured money, months and years after maturity.
THEY HID UNDER THE CLOAK OF ISLAM, WITH THEIR FRAUDULENT TAKAFUL SAVINGS PLAN TO DEFRAUD PEOPLE.
I have written several emails to them without a single response.
I have been to their office at Ikoyi last month to warn them and that my return won't be good...

I HAVE WRITTEN SEVERAL COMPLAINTS AND REPORT TO THE USELESS NIACOM THAT'S SUPPOSED TO BE INSURANCE COMPANY POLICE TO PUT THEM TO CHECK, BUT THE USELESS NIACOM IS NOT EVEN RESPONDING.
I THINK AFRICAN ALLIANCE INSURANCE COULD HAVE BRIBED THEM...

Please I want suggestions from people who have had similar experiences with these evil and criminal insurance companies and how they were able to retrieve their money.

We deserve the kind of rulership we are getting in the country. All these people making noise, when election comes, they'll queue to collect 5k. Some will vote along tribal and religious affiliation forgetting that hunger and hardship knows no tribe or religion. These people don't have your welfare at heart. They are there for their selfish interest and gains. Una go learn the hard way. This is the Genesis, book of lamentation is still very far.

Meaning you should all forget about constant power supply or a near 90% provision if you can't afford it.
With this hike Tinubu has clarified clearly that electricity supply will be far worse and epileptic under his administration. That is what he wants you to understand.
Mind you, if you all decide to switch to solar panels, you will all be taxed.

How many Nigerians can afford it, you people just come out and talk anyhow, can someone on 35k minimum wage afford it?

If people who supported Tinubu did not see his style of operations in Lagos and know what he was going to replicate in Nigeria, well, this is just one of it....

helinues:

That's unsubstantiated..

Again, stop being incoherent on my mentions

What's unsubstantiated, NERC said 20hrs power supply for those with increased tariff, does 20 hours sound like 24hrs to you?

And we both know that the discos may constantly fall short of that 20hrs everyday, the worst part is those who are under estimated billing on the same band A may suffer more, that means they will be paying for darkness at a higher rate, is it what is happening in America and U.K?

The suggestion that Band A consumers will pay for more while power will not improve does not arise because it's prepaid.
They pay for what they use.

But like someone commented above, more power would be distributed to Band A for more revenue to the government.

This is Nigeria.

Bands B, C and D will suffer for this policy.
